Season 4 Spoilers and Speculation Part 1

Some Back to School Cleaning

The original material from the season 4 spoilers page, after the break.

Here We Go!

[We all have our guilty pleasures, and ours is spoilers! If you have one you’d like to share, but are afraid that it might lessen someone’s enjoyment of the show, please e-mail the information to us at, chuckthisblog(at)gmail(dot)com and we’ll post them here.]

Months before the season begins, we have our first official spoiler from Ausiello:

Question: Please give me a scoop on the new season of Chuck! —Joy
Ausiello: And the title of the season 4 premiere is…”Chuck vs. the Anniversary”! What does it mean? Hit the comments with your theories!

Oh, that’s so nice of him!

– joe

The new spoiler is here!  The new Spoiler is here!!

Closing in on Comicon we get the next tidbit on the S4 premier from Josh Schwartz himself on Twitter:
JoshSchwartz76: Yes it’s true. Dolph Lundgren to try and “break” Chuck Bartowski in Season 4 premiere.

I’m officially psyched.

– Ernie

And so is Ausiello.

“Dolph Lundgren plays Marko,” explains Chuck co-creator Chris Fedak. “Is he Russian? Yes. Is he a terrifying bad guy? Yes. Will he say, ‘I must break you’? You’ll have to wait for the return of Chuck.” I’m counting the days! Now, what about Stanton? “Harry will play Harry Dean, the man who comes between Chuck and his search for Mom. Who is he exactly? Well, we’ll say this: Only Harry Dean Stanton could play this part.” Okay, now I’m counting the minutes!

More on episode 4.01 from Ausiello:

Actress–author–model–animal crusader–Daily Show correspondent Olivia Munn can now add superspy to her endless list of hyphenations when she guest-stars on Chuck this fall!

Munn, who has a regular role on NBC’s midseason comedy Perfect Couples, will play an impossibly cool, smart, and pretty CIA agent who intimidates and schools Chuck and Morgan in the season 4 premiere on Sept. 20.

And it gets better. Apparently, supermodels are “in” this year.  They are looking for one to play a super-sexy spy in the second episode, which is apparently entitled Chuck vs. the Suitcase.

Could a supersexy spy who kicks butt possibly come between Chuck and Sarah?  I don’t think so!

– joe

New Ausiello Spoiler for 22-Jul-2010; Heather Chandler is back!

According to a Chuck insider, Richie will resurface in October when a prison transfer goes awry and her character, Heather Chandler, ends up being stowed away at Castle (a.k.a. the underground CIA base). But here’s where things get really interesting: I’m told her arrival dovetails with some serious bumps in Chuck and Sarah’s deepening relationship. And you better believe that Ms. Heather will use that rift to her advantage.

And he has more, too.

– joe

The first promo for Season 4…

The Premier Returns!

Senor Alejandro Goya, the Premier of our favorite fictitious South American Country, Costa Gravas, returns to invite Awesome to his island nation. All this because he once saved the dictator’s life? Is that all it takes???

According to TV Guide, this is episode 4. Armand Assante rules!

Aladinsgenie4u points out in comments that the title of 4.04 is Chuck versus The Coup D’Etat. That comes from Spoiler TV.

And turn your mind back to 1983. Remember Joel’s (Tom Cruise) best friend Barry in Risky Business? TV Guide also says Bronson Pinchot has been cast in the second episode.

This is NOT a Spoiler

But it is big Season 4 news. From TV Writer’s Podcast (with links to their IMDB profiles), the new writers for the show are:

  • Nicholas Wootton
  • Kristin Newman
  • Craig DiGregorio
  • Henry Alonso Myers

Mel at ChuckTV.net has more of their bios too!

– joe

I’m not sure that this person wanted to remain anonymous, but many thanks to the reader who sent in this tip from Fancast.

If on ‘Chuck‘ the Buy More is now being run by the CIA, what does that mean for Big Mike and the Nerd Herders? Are they off the show? – Stu
Big Mike is still on hand – though oblivious to the true nature of his new bosses, Mark Christopher Lawrence tells me. Lester and Jeff, meanwhile, are “on the lam, getting a taste of freedom… and fear,” says Vik Sahay. “Who knows what that kind of new feral quality that will bring if and when we reunite with the gang?” So, Jeffster’s on some sort of “excellent adventure”? “I don’t know about excellent,” Vik laughs. “More like torturous, weird, awkward and off-putting.”

Always love to know what’s happening to Jefffster!

– joe

Late breaking: the name 4.03 is Chuck vs. The Cubic Z. Is that good news or bad???
——
I need to start dating these spoilers – they’re coming in so fast and furious.  The worst thing is that this news is already “so 5 minutes ago.”  Does anyone not realize that season 4 will feature a baby awesome?  Well, maybe not “feature”, and maybe not even a baby just yet, but certainly, there will be an addition coming to the Woodcomb household and the Chuck family.

Question: I need some Chuck scoop! —Taylor
Ausiello: Captain Awesome won’t be reviving his short-lived career as an international superspy anytime soon. “Last season Awesome realized if there was one place in the world where he wasn’t awesome, it was on spy missions,” notes exec producer Chris Fedak. “He’d like to stay as far away from the spy world as he can.” That’s particularly true now that there’s a mini Awesome on the way. “He is going to be way more into all of the rituals of pregnancy than even Ellie is,” says fellow EP Josh Schwartz of the daddy-to-be. “Like all things in life, Awesome is going to throw himself into the pregnancy with his usual fervor.”

– joe

9/13 – Chuck Online puts up this spoiler:

Chuck star Zachary Levi has revealed that Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) will be more involved with his character’s spy career in the upcoming fourth season. In the third season finale, Chuck confessed the details of his secret life to his sister.

He added: “Secrets are being kept but there’s still some transparency with it. So I’m not having to do the same thing I’ve had to do. It’s a little bit different.

Looks to my eyes that Chuck is still keeping secrets, but not in the way we might be thinking.

My offline alter ego is a convicted bibliophile and causes rampant pognophobia whenever he goes out in public. He wants to be James Lileks when he grows up or Dave Barry if he doesn’t.  His hobbies are mopery, curling and watching and writing about Chuck.  Obsessively.  Really, the dude needs serious help.

Okay so the spoiler page is getting restructured. That’s cool and thanks a lot.

    “CHUCK VERSUS THE ANNIVERSARY”
09/20/2010 (08:00PM – 09:00PM) (Monday) : CHUCK BEGINS A SEARCH FOR HIS MOTHER, WHICH HE MUST KEEP A SECRET FROM THE CIA AND HIS SISTER — LINDA HAMILTON GUEST STARS AS MARY BARTOWSKI — DOLPH LUNDGREN, HARRY DEAN STANTON AND
OLIVIA MUNN ALSO GUEST STAR — Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Morgan (Joshua Gomez) go on a rogue globe-spanning mission to find Chuck’s mom. Meanwhile, Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) and Casey (Adam Baldwin) follow a trail to Russia as they investigate the mysterious Volkoff Industries and its operative, Marco (guest star Dolph Lundgren). Back at home, Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) delivers big news to her family. Bonita Friedericy also stars.

    • atcdave says:

      Ahh, bummer!

    • Merve says:

The synopsis doesn’t tell us much, as is usually the case with such synopses. The episode synopses for the last few episodes of season 3 were really, really vague and left out a lot of important stuff, so it’s possible that there’s more going on than would appear from this synopsis. There are so many unanswered questions. What’s going on with the Buy More? What happened to Jeff and Lester? Is Chuck still affiliated with the CIA? What have Sarah and Casey been up to?

  3. OldDarth says:

So, as expected, Sarah and Ellie are being kept in the dark.

    Release the hounds! 🙂

    • Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

Oh but TPTB have “learned” some things last season. 😛

I hope the secret keeping plays out (really really) quickly. Tune in and find out.

  4. Crumby says:

What’s interesting is that TPTB never actually said that Chuck was going to lie to Sarah. Does he consider her CIA first or his girlfriend?

After all, maybe he told her, and he’s searching with Morgan because she’s busy.

  5. Robert H says:

Well, well, well and what appears to be in the offing
for the imediate episodes of Season 4? We now may
have some answers if true. Lies, Lies, and more Lies!!!! Just what the viewers did not want. And we
also have a backdoor PLI to indirectly separate
Chuck/Sarah again-A BROMANCE!!!! Sarah has a new rival, It’s Morgan!!!!! Again what the viewers did
not want. The boys just have to have their playtime
    together don’t they?

Will TPTB EVER learn? Apparently not…or their
arrogance is so astounding it would have to rank at
least a 10 on the scales of stupidity if all of this is true.

As I noted in earlier posts the pairings should have been Chuck/Sarah and Casey/Morgan. In the last
6 episodes of the infamous Season 3, one of the few
bright spots was the comedy of Casey mentoring Morgan while trying at the same time to keep him away from his daughter. It generated a lot of
laughs and reminded us of what the show used to be.
You would think the producers would run with this
and use it to help rebuild the broken fan base to get a back 6 or 9 order from NBC which will be critical to a possible 5th season, not to mention
    the ratings.

But if the “spoilers” are true apparently this is not to be….Well I’m not going to worry about it.
I’m way, way past that. I’ll watch and evaluate on
an episode by episode basis. If I like what I see,
I’ll continue to watch. If not……the end, period.
No more blank checks based on faith hoping things
will get better, no more buzz, no more teasing.

Yoda once said “Do or do not”. It’s all in the producers’ hands now. They will either get it right
or they won’t, PERIOD. There is no longer any margin
for error here and fan patience is simply gone. The
show has to be very strong right out of the gate and
stay that way consistently to have any chance of survival. You can be sure NBC will be watching the
ratings very carefully this time around.

Well at least we won’t have a long wait to find out
one way or the other. September 20th is less than 3
    weeks away. Until then……………

    • atcdave says:

While I agree I’m disappointed with the synopsis, because it seems Chuck is still lying. My bet is that this issue will be resolved quickly, I’m thinking by 4.04 at the latest.

I agree its a foolish decision by the writers to even suggest this route, I am willing to give them some time to see how it plays out.

  6. treecrab says:

I hope that Chuck has told Sarah about his search for Mama B, because otherwise I am left at a loss as to how Chuck and Morgan could travel around the globe searching for MEB and Sarah be kept in the dark.

Does that mean she’s spending so little time at home that she doesn’t even know when her boyfriend has left the country?

  7. alladinsgenie4u says:

Thanks for the info. Looks like a part of the episode is set in Russia. Now the promo pic of Sarah and Casey on that plane is clear – they are either going to Russia or coming back from the mission. And judging by Sarah’s expression (angry)- looks like they are coming back from the mission after being saved by Chuck (as per the very short initial promo).

So hopefully, the secret keeping from Sarah ends at the end of 4×01

  8. OldDarth says:

Hypothetical question – what if Sarah knows right off the bat in 4.01 that her mission is to find MamaB and she is under orders not to tell Chuck?

How does that sit with everyone?

    • alladinsgenie4u says:

Hmmm.Gives rise to interesting possibilities. Or maybe Sarah and Casey’s investigation into Dolph Lundgren’s character Marko points them towards Mama B.

I wonder where Harry Dean Stanton will fit in – he is supposed to be the person who comes in between Chuck and his search for Mama B.

Also the stills for 4×01 had Mama B pointing a gun – at whom? bad guys? Sarah and Casey? Chuck? LOL.

Anyways – the wait for the premiere is getting unbearable and the lack of promos isn’t helping either.

    • JC says:

I figured by the end of 4.01 she would know about MEB somehow. Now if she was ordered to, that would bring up some interesting issues between her and Chuck. Are they a couple first or spies.

Now I’m probably in the minority but I hope she is keeping facts about MEB from Chuck. Its gotten old that his lies are the only ones that get pointed out. It would be a perfect opportunity to clear the air for both sides.

    • atcdave says:

I wouldn’t like that either OD, I hold them both to the same standard. Either way I hope they learn a lesson about not lying to each other. But then I thought that lesson was learned long ago…

  9. rac2873 says:

I remember Fedak saying that the show lies with Team B together so how do you get them back together again.

I think the whole Morgan and Chuck searching for Momma B thing has been happening over the summer and I am sure that Sarah will find out pretty soon what her boyfriend is up to. For some reason I think that for them to all get together and work maybe they form a rouge team with Beckman as the lead. It cannot last with Sarah and Casey working for Beckman and Chuck and Sarah doing their rogue search. That will get old fast and it will not make for a very compelling show.

    • atcdave says:

I agree entirely, and that’s the main thing that gives me hope for the season. I don’t like that they’ve been misleading each other, but I expect it to be settled quickly.

  10. Robert H says:

I was watching NBC last night (rare for me w/o Chuck
on) and I noticed something. I wonder if anybody else has also noticed.

During the hour I watched NBC had promos for their
fall schedule during commercials for their MON-FRI
schedule. The promos covered each day of the week
including Mondays. Chuck was not mentioned at all,
not even ONCE. In the few other times Ive had NBC
on I haven’t seen ANY Chuck promos either.

I find this to be very interesting if this is indicative of NBC’s attitude for the show’s prospects. Now it’s true I don’t watch NBC much,
and maybe Ive missed the promos if they’re being aired.

Has anybody else seen anything? Just curious…..

    Thanks.

    • atcdave says:

I’ve seen adds for the S3 discs, but nothing for the show. Some of that isn’t so surprising, a show going into its fourth season will normally get less promotion, its believed to have an established fan base. Sunday night football starts 9/12, I would expect to see something by then though. NBC certainly doesn’t want the show to fail, but I’m sure they want to spend as little time promoting it as possible.

  11. Robert H says:

Where can I see the promo for Season 4 that shows
Sarah/Casey returning on a plane with Sarah having an angry expression people keep referring to?

I can’t find it anywhere. Some one please advise, thanks.

  12. Robert H says:

Thanks ez. Found it. One picture can really portray
a thousand words. Sarah does not look like a happy camper. Maybe she’s getting tired of the lies, too.
Hey Chuckie boy, are your lies worth losing her?
Hey TPTB, showrunners, or whatever you think you are, are the storyline or scripted lies along with
the “bromance” worth losing your show for sure? It
doesn’t look good in Spoilerville and the episodes
haven’t even aired yet! Well let’s be “fair” and wait and see. I am just wondering though if the
producers are going to be “fair” with the viewers.
Nothing to do now except wait……

Mama B. looks to be tough as nails. Is she really worth “finding”? Sometimes ignorance can be bliss.

Reminds me of the old saying “Be careful what you wish for, you may get it”.

Thanks again ez for posting the website showing 8
still pictures from Episode 1 Season 4. They were
really quite illuminating and provided some clues as
to where the show is going this year. Appreciate it.

  14. herder says:

Speculation going forward, a possible meaning for Greta, Government Resource Evaluation and Training (or Testing) Agent. The Buy More is now a CIA facility, someone has to say if the agents there make the grade, maybe Greta is that person.

  15. jason says:

Halloween episode = aisle of terror, plus more stunt casting – can it get any better?

    http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/09/08/freddy-krueger-chuck-robert-englund-nbc/

    • atcdave says:

That is a fun bit of stunt casting. The part even sounds Freddy Krueger-like. I really hope this gets us some attention!

    • herder says:

Hmmm, halloween episode, so who dresses up as what? Chuck and Sarah as the sandworm or Han and Leia this time? Alex as Dorothy and Morgan as Toto. Casey as the Terminator. Loads of fun possibilities.

    • ChuckNewbie8 says:

All right NOW I’m getting scared.

They’re throwing everything but the kitchen sink in there!

Is this Chuck’s last season? Or at the very least their projected, “if we’re going down, we’re going down shooting” mode?

      • Ernie Davis says:

I think if it is the last season TPTB want to be able to say they didn’t just coast into cancellation, they actually tried to get new viewers, increase ratings, and give the fans something special. I say kuddos for that. 🙂

    • JC says:

It’d be awesome if he was a villain like the Scarecrow from Batman begins. Playing on all the characters fears and doubts.

      • alladinsgenie4u says:

They are already going for a Batman type scenario for Chuck – so why not a Scarecrow type character as a villain – it would surely be awesome.

Evil Scientist – another villain messing with the Intersect perhaps?

      • JC says:

When the title of the episode was released I guessed it was the bottle episode of the season. So it wouldn’t surprise me if it played out like Santa Claus somewhat.

    • alladinsgenie4u says:

Thanks for the link. I am thinking that he will probably be one of the villains that Chuck encounters during his search for Mama B. Maybe this is where things come to a head between Chuck and Sarah regarding his search for Mama B and how dangerous it is for him. Cue in the next episode – Chuck vs The First Fight

  16. JC says:

    http://zacharylevifan.com/wordpress/?p=5058

    Episode 4.02
Chuck and Sarah go under cover in Milan during Fashion Week to
retrieve a high-tech secret weapon; Morgan discovers a fatal flaw that
    compromises the new Buy More.

    • alladinsgenie4u says:

Lets hope that this time is really a real secret weapon and not some gold-plated briefcase that contains nothing of value (supposed discs on Ring) and trinkets of dead spies(Eve’s ring).

The synopsis kind of hints that Chuck is back with the CIA

    • atcdave says:

I do like that its about Chuck and Sarah undercover together pretty quickly. Hopefully the separate paths part of their careers will end pretty quickly.

  17. jason says:

this does not mean an end to the lies for sure, but it might, has to be considered good news, even for the most pessimistic of the ‘chuck vs pinocchio’ naysayers:

    http://www.spoilertv.com/2010/09/chuck-episode-402-chuck-versus-suitcase.html

  18. JC says:

Not an official spoiler but the guy who was right about Shaw’s return and the BuyMore let some things slip.

The Orange Orange is gone, Castle has been expanded and Casey & Morgan stormed an Iranian Bunker built in the parking lot.

  19. ez says:

    “CHUCK VERSUS THE SUITCASE”

09/27/2010 (08:00PM – 09:00PM) (Monday) : CHUCK AND SARAH TRAVEL TO FASHION WEEK IN MILAN TO RETRIEVE A HIGH-TECH SECRET WEAPON — KAROLINA KURKOVA, LOU FERRIGNO, AND ISAIAH MUSTAFA GUEST STAR — When Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) go undercover in Milan, Chuck realizes the “Achilles’ Heel” in their relationship, but must set personal issues aside for the mission. Meanwhile, Morgan (Joshua Gomez) recognizes a fatal flaw that compromises the new Buy More. Elsewhere, Casey struggles to put down roots in Burbank. Bonita Friedericy, Vik Sahay and Scott Krinsky also star.

    http://www.spoilertv.com/2010/09/chuck-402-chuck-vs-suitcase-press.html

    • alladinsgenie4u says:

“Achilles Heel in C/S relationship –
      Lack of trust?
      Sarah has to seduce someone?
Someone not in with both feet?

Any good guesses? Mine are pathetic.

    • atcdave says:

Whatever the “Achilles Heel” is I bet it gets resolved fairly quickly. We know there’s some sort of “rough patch” in 4.03, which may be related. But my money is on a resolution by the end of 4.03.

It may have to do with seduction missions, or Chuck not coming clean about his search for mom, or some secret from Sarah’s past. Those are the most obvious ones to me.

      • alladinsgenie4u says:

hmmm. No strapping male guest stars for 4×02. But a former Victoria Secrets model is in that episode. SO a seduction mission for Chuck?

IMHO, Mama B will not be a big issue after the premiere- that will come to a head by 4×06.

Secret from Sarah’s past – could be a lead in to the next Heather Chandler episode.

      • jason says:

i’m thinking a simple one, they are mutually afraid for the other’s safety

      • atcdave says:

You’re right about the guest stars, and if Chuck’s on a seduction mission I expect it to played for humor; so that idea is probably out. I’m leaning towards the Sarah’s past thing, maybe its her turn to be keeping secrets again. That could be a real buzz kill if Sarah’s back to that.

Again, I expect a speedy resolution.

      • thinkling says:

Hope you’re right about a quick resolution. I’m not up for long drawn out problems.

I’m thinking maybe the balance between work and personal life, different expectations?

      • atcdave says:

Could be, I was thinking with Heather Chandler back in 4.03 that would be a good time for Sarah’s past to rear its ugly head again. So maybe its a 2 episode arc, 4.02-4.03.

looks like a lot of folks chiming in with good ideas, there’s more possibilities than I considered!

  20. rac2873 says:

Bronson Pinchot is a match maker, there is a hot Russian model and a catwalk fight. I am thinking Chuck has to seduce the model and Sarah does not like it. I would love to territorial Sarah.

    Jealous Sarah is the best.

  21. thinkling says:

Another possibility could be insecurities. I can actually see both of them having insecurities that could cause misunderstandings and/or could be exploited by their enemies.

  22. Buy More Associate says:

Chances are we’ve already been told what the “achille’s heel” is.

Remember that convoluted quote a week or two ago from Schwartz about gender reversal and Sarah always being in relationships with people she expected to die in the line of duty?

So wouldn’t logic dictate that this season Chuck realizes that about Sarah? Hence the gender reversal? Besides, isn’t this the episode (Suitcase/#2) where Sarah is in a fight on a catwalk? What would be more frightening for Chuck than seeing Sarah in danger and having to deal with the fact that she could die?

  23. ChuckNewbie8 says:

    From YS’ twitter:

Having a stand off, gun in each others face type thing, with Linda Hamilton right now 🙂

    HOLY #($*#($ I can’t wait!

    • atcdave says:

So there will be some mother-in-law troubles…

    • alladinsgenie4u says:

This is going to be awesome. I am guessing the real bumps in C/S relationship would start with the coming of Mama B. So mother-in-law/daughter-in-law face off- does that mean Mama B is bad?

      • atcdave says:

I think even if MEB starts bad she’ll come around or switch sides pretty quickly. I’m also thinking this is probably the first meeting on the show of MEB and Sarah, wonder if Chuck is in the scene too. But I’m thinking MEB won’t hurt Sarah once she knows who she is to Chuck (maybe the bracelet comes into play here?).

And I’m thinking the “bumps” for Chuck and Sarah have been mostly sorted out at this point. My guess is they’ll be in a very good spot by the end of 4.03; while the episode they’re shooting now is 4.06.

      • alladinsgenie4u says:

@Dave – Agreed. I believe Zac’s interview with spoiler junkies made it clear that Chuck doesn’t get to meet his mom in 4×06. But Yay! to the fact that Sarah meets her first and that too in a gun drawn face off. Now the only thing to make this even better – as you say – the bracelet on Sarah’s wrist.

      • Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

I don’t know. I think we’re hanging too much on the bracelet. After S3 I don’t think TPTB attach the same value to certain things as we do.

Don’t get me wrong, it would be completely idiotic if it wasn’t used in relation to Mama B somehow, but then Sarah also gave her real name to Shaw, so anything is up for grabs.

      • atcdave says:

As I was aying the other day Joseph, I don’t think the bracelet will play a key role in the meeting. Sarah still seems to wear it only rarely, and TPTB have a history of ignoring most things from the past we thought were important. I think its all just wishful thinking. But somehow the Sarah/MEB will have to wind down with neither getting killed.

      • amyabn says:

I think the bracelet will be what keeps MEB from pulling the trigger. We will have an “aha!” moment and go from there. Sarah might not realize it, but MEB will. And I think Sarah has been wearing the bracelet more. She wore it for the scene at Ellie’s in Honeymooners and I think (I’ll have to double check) she wore it at dinner in Ring 2. I think it will become more commonplace as she is more secure in the relationship. After all, it is a gift for a real girlfriend!

      • atcdave says:

Actually Amy I agree entirely now. Funny the difference a few days makes.

    • Big Kev says:

The spoilers and casting for S4 just get better and better! Yvonne may not tweet often, but that one was worth the wait.
I can’t see Mama B staying bad even if she starts that way, and I have to say I hope Chuck and Ellie don’t lose both their parents – but I’m seriously excited by what I’m hearing and where the writers could be taking the show this season.

      • jason says:

kev – maybe even better than fanfic – LOL – also, both their parents? Not so sure papa b is anywhere near dead, maybe that will be the papa b thing, kill him every season, figure out ways to bring him back?

      • Big Kev says:

Jason – a Mama B/Sarah smackdown with the bracelet swinging on Sarah’s wrist causing Mama B to realize exactly who she is? Yep. Complete fanfic. And I’d be all for it.
As much as I love Papa B I would hate it if they brought him back. Just a personal opinion but the “back from the dead” device is one that I loathe. It just always smacks of lazy writing to me and screams “we’ve run out of ideas”.
Specifically in relation to Chuck, if the show continually pulls the rug out from all of it’s high stakes moments (Shaw on the bridge and Papa B in Subway) then the stakes and drama in the spy plots, such as they are, become meaningless. I really don’t want to see that – but I do get that most would probably be less bothered by Papa B’s return than I would be.

    • jkl says:

Heh, Yvonne have never been good with this spoiler stuff, has she.

      Anyways sounds cool.

      • GuardianofOA says:

Isn’t the more interesting question: Why do TPTB want us to know this?

Strahovski has NEVER been in on story decisions and in most interviews says something like, “That’s all I think I can say.” And she often has the PR guy (Jaime French) at her elbow in formal interviews.

So, suddenly, someone tells her: Tweet the gun-in-face confrontation.

Since I am not particularly invested in Mama B story line (not against it, just not jazzed), I’m as much interested in the mindset behind a sanctioned spoiler of this magnitude.

My guess: The Mama B situation is the cause of the first fight in the next episode, conveniently titled First Fight. Sarah thinks Mama B is rogue, Chuck doesn’t.

      • Ernie Davis says:

It’s probably some sort of devious conspiracy to get us to watch the show or something. Maybe Yvonne thought it would be cool to tell her fans about it AND it might get people excited and talking about it and to watch the show!

      • Buy More Associate says:

        @BigKev-
You know, generally, I am against the “back from the dead” stuff, too. But Chuck has turned it into a show signature. You almost feel cheated if important dead folks don’t come back for an encore.

Worked for Bryce, whose return drove the WT/WT for a while. Worked for Shaw, who became a credible villain.

They’ve actually set up a Papa B “back from the dead” thing much more credibly than the others. He’s shot (once, cleanly) right there in front of the tissue regeneration equipment that saved Shaw. There’s no reason to think that it won’t be revealed that someone (maybe even Mama B) came into the room and saved Papa B after Jason and Shaw took Chuck away.

My guess is that his back-from-the-dead status is TOTALLY dependent on whether they can get Bakula when shooting for episode 12-13 is due. Unless, of course, Mama B’s secret (I saved Papa B) is what drives a back 6 or 9 story arc should the show do well enough in the ratings this year…

      • Big Kev says:

        BMA,
Completely agree with you that the set up is there for PapaB, both in story terms and practical terms. And it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they did it. I just hope they don’t.
Shaw was a passable villain – but I was holding my nose through the whole arc because of the device they used. And the collateral damage that was done to Other Guy as a dramatic finale I thought was huge. And don’t even get me started on how they hung much of the front 13 on how Chuck would deal with the inevitability of his first kill and what it would mean – and then blew all that up by bringing Shaw back.
I think clearly it was a decision made because they didn’t have time to set up a credible néw villain in the back six – so they dusted off Shaw. In their defense Subway is just about my favorite episode of the series in spite of my back from the dead reservations, so I’m rendering my own argument moot to some extent – but I really do struggle with the bridge scene now. If they brung back PapaB I think it will do similar damage to my high opinion of Subway and Ring II. But I am preparing myself to have to build a bridge, as they say…

        Ernie,
As always – love your work!!

      • Big Kev says:

And did I really just type “brung back”?? Yep. That’ll teach me not to try and be coherent at 1.47am….

      • kbh says:

I never understood why Shaw coming back lessened anything about Other Guy. Chuck still shot him with the intent to kill, Shaw coming back doesn’t change that.

      • Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

People need to start staying dead, for death to have some meaning or gravity. There’s has to be finality associated with death. If they keep bringing people back from the dead, why not kill Sarah or Chuck?

Yes, bringing Shaw back totally cheapened the climatic value of 3.13.

I didn’t care for Shaw’s return, and he only made an OK villain, he was hardly great. He was only a great villain compared to anything else that he was.

Justin could have pulled off supreme evil doer just as well, likely better. He was already more sinister than Shaw was.

      • JC says:

Exactly, you can’t have dramatic story lines and then hand wave away the climax three episodes later. It’s like the scene Yvonne tweeted about why should I care if one of them could be slapped in a tissue regeneration machine.

As for Shaw he had to be a credible spy for him to be a a villain. And since he was inept at everything he did its hard to see him as a threat.

      • atcdave says:

I think I’ll join with Big Kev on this one. I think it cheapens the drama if everyone keeps coming back from the dead. Its a bummer, I really like Scott Bakula, but I think its best if he isn’t brought back.
I thought Shaw was at his best in the last two episodes, but I would have prefered he stayed dead and they had used a different villain.

      • Buy More Associate says:

As I say, I’m no fan of the back from the dead meme, but TPTB really have used the revivals well.

If Bryce didn’t come back from the dead, we wouldn’t have had the chance to see Sarah definitively choose Chuck over Bryce in BREAK-UP.

Bringing Shaw back from the dead did not change the point of OTHER GUY: Chuck can and did pull the trigger when he had to. Bringing him back allowed Chuck to beat him again. And the point of RING II was to establish that Chuck didn’t need to kill Shaw again. His refusal, as the Sarah character says, “is what makes [him] great.” You actually needed Shaw alive to make the point: Chuck kills only because he HAS TO DO IT, not because it’s a fast, easy solution.

If they can revive Papa B for a point as important as those, well, I’d be for it.

And my guess is that the point of a Papa B revival would be to show that Chuck’s decision to stay and deal with the ramifications of a spy life is a better choice than Papa B’s decision to run and abandon his family.

I mean, I am almost sure the decision to search for a find Mama B IS to show that Chuck BUILDING a family unit is a much better choice than running as the earlier generation of Bartowskis did…

Otherwise, who cares about Mama B anyway?

      • herder says:

BMA, good point about Chuck staying and building a family. Will this require an explicit rejection of his family’s choices or will the implicit rejection be enough.

      • atcdave says:

Still not sold on the back from the dead angle; although I will agree it was well done the first time (Bryce death 1.0).

I do agree strongly about not repeating the mistakes of the parents. I really want to see that play out. But I’m fine with it if the parents aren’t there to see it. The important thing is Sarah knows…

      • Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

Shaw should have stayed dead, for Chuck’s character growth, negative growth in a way, but with Shaw being brought back from the dead there is no good reason for Final Exam, American Hero, and Other Guy. Chuck hasn’t used a real gun since, the story would have been better with Shaw’s death being real.

BMA and I will have to agree to disagree on this.

      • Buy More Associate says:

        @herder-
Well, wouldn’t you say that Chuck has already explicitly said what he believes? His calling out of Papa B in an episode (sorry, forgot which one) about his choices. Then his business in the Bronco in SUBWAY when he insists that his father turn around because Sarah and everyone else are in danger? So I guess, IMHO, they are going to try to reunite the earlier generation and present Chuck’s choices (to build a new family with Sarah, Morgan, Casey and the Awesomes) as a stark contrast.

        @joseph-
Well, you will never get me defending the worst parts of season 3 (and FINAL EXAM is certainly the worst of the worst, IMHO). But I guess we WILL have to disagree on the Shaw thing.

Chuck didn’t pull the trigger just ONCE n OTHER GUY. But three or four times. So he really did what he had to do. OTHER GUY establishes Chuck’s willingness to kill. Regardless of Shaw’s resurrection, Chuck killed him in OTHER GUY. Chuck’s decision not to kill Shaw again in RING II establishes, I think, the equally vital point that Chuck will not kill wantonly.

I think Mama B is playing the role of Darth Vader in the story.

Chuck picks up SNL Alum Ana Gasteyer

    http://www.fancast.com/blogs/2010/tv-news/scoop-chuck-plus-snls-ana-gasteyer-equals-pure-torture/

    An excerpt:
Specifically, Gasteyer will play Dasha, a ruthless operative for the nefarious Volkoff organization. Dasha’s calling card? No, it’s not an affinity for Schweddy Balls. It’s her expertise at torturing opposing spies “with small-ish implements,”

    • herder says:

What does she have against opposing spies with smallish implements?

      • Ernie Davis says:

I think that’s supposed to be small-ish instruments, you know, like the piccolo. Hate the woodwinds in general, but damn those piccolo players… they should be tortured.

    • atcdave says:

Really nice thing about this story is its mentioned in the entertainment box on comcast.net homepage. So that’s free publicity for the nect day or so.

  26. herder says:

Saw a real live Chuck promo on NBC, all about Chuck’s mother (“she got captured?”) and pushing Linda Hamilton.

    • JC says:

So NBC runs a promo against a Monday Night Football double header instead of one during their Sunday night game. No words

      • atcdave says:

We’ve still got another week. Next Sunday is huge, day before the broadcast and all. There were some spots last night where Chuck was introducing and “Event” trailer. I really want to see a real promo next Sunday night!

      • JC says:

It just seems like a waste. I was reading at TVBN that the Sunday Night Game was the highest rated opening game in 14 years, over 25 million viewers. It just seems crazy they wouldn’t promote Chuck at least once during the game.

      • herder says:

They did do the Chuck flashing on the Event bit once while I was watching the game on Sunday (last night too). I mentioned the promo last night because it was the first Chuck promo that told something of what this season will have.

  27. ChuckNewbie8 says:

Here’s the one herder is talking about:

All I can say is WHOA!

    • Crumby says:

      Awesome! Thanks for the link!

So Sarah did tell Chuck about his mother?

    • thinkling says:

WHOA and double WHOA. OK, now THAT was a promo!! 🙂

It looks like Chuck and Sarah are together in the search for mom before 4.01, but for sure before 4.02. And it looks like Sarah has found out some stuff that Chuck didn’t know? Partners all the way (I hope).

    • Ernie Davis says:

It is now up on our season 4 spoilers page for those who want to watch. MEB definitely a Sarah.

  28. thinkling says:

Just saw this spoiler from comcast via chuckonline.

Q: Enough about the stunt casting on ‘Chuck,’ as fun as it might be. What’s going on with Chuck and Sarah this season?

A: Acknowledging that Chuck/Sarah are “the heart of the show,” exec producer Chris Fedak tells me that their romance is now “obstacle-free in the sense that were not doing the ‘Will they/Won’t they’ thing. But in every relationship, there are going to be issues.” And the hot topic for Chuck and his chica? She’s still in the spy game, while he is jobless, and that weighs heavily on Chuck as he charts their future. “There’s always an interpersonal story for those two,” says Fedak.

    http://www.chuckonline.net/

    • Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

… Chuck/Sarah are “the heart of the show,” …

They also said this last season. Then proceeded to rip out the heart, stomp on it and feed it to the dog. But apparently it was necessary for the growth of the characters. I’d love to have that debate with CF someday.

  29. ChuckNewbie8 says:

I was searching around the web for a definition of something…anyways came across this (don’t know if it’s been posted) but from Chuckbartowski.it:

    – No new character will join in the report of Chuck and Sarah.
    – The cover of Chuck and Sarah to the Buy More is always the same. Set the Buy More has changed and some parts were completely rebuilt.
    – The budget of the show is more than last year and do not be surprised by all these new guest star. The cost of the guest is very low compared to other expenses (such as music, for example).
    – Sarah Walker has no sisters. Might have a brother, but certainly not discover this season.
    – The first episode of the second season had little to do with the rest of the story of the season. The premiere of the third season had nothing to do in part, and the first episode of the fourth season will be the beginning of a new story and will be crucial.
    – Big Mike, Jeff Barnes and Lester Patel will work to Buy More again despite what happened in the season finale and five webisodes Hard to Buy.
    – Besides the Halloween episode there might even be one on Thanksgiving, but the spoiler has not yet been confirmed.
    – In this new season does not find out anything about Sarah’s mother or the rest of her family.
    – In the third season the characters have grown a lot and with the six additional episodes have reached a point that nobody expected. The fourth season will further consolidate the growth.
    – The writers argue that everything that fans wanted to see the third season will see in the fourth season.

Not a lot of stuff we haven’t heard before but some new.

  30. alladinsgenie4u says:

Ok! A member over at fan forum has posted some details appearing in the latest TV Guide. I am just copy/pasting the info here. I do not have the original source.
    ————————————————–
Where we left off: Chuck (Zachary Levi) discovered his dead dad’s secret spy lair, along with clues to the whereabouts of his long-missing mother.

What’s next: Chuck’s need to locate Mom Bartowski (Linda Hamilton) will be “the emotional core of the season,” says exec producer Chris Fedak. “But Chuck has also promised his sister Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) that he quit the spy biz, so he’s very torn. Does he honor his promise to her, or does he honor his father’s last request to find his mom?” The CIA rebuilds the Buy More and turns it into a major spy center. Chuck and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) ponder marriage – that is, when they’re not battling a splashy roster of new and returning baddies including Dolph Ludgren, Harry Dean Stanton, Lou Ferrigno, Eric Roberts, Nicole Richie, Armand Assante and more.

Shaken, not stirred: NBC has announced that former James Bond Timothy Dalton will play a top-secret, multi-episode character who has history with Mrs. Bartowski. Meanwhile, Fedak tells us Chuck’s arch-nemesis this season will be “Alexi Volkoff, a Howard Hughes-type Russian oligarch who is big in the arms trade and very, very evil.” Are they one and the same?

    • atcdave says:

Since marriage has now been brought up by TPTB, I think its assured it will happen this season.

      • thinkling says:

I really hope so, no surprise there … but especially if it’s addressed in any real way. If they addressed it and then backed away from it, it would be like S3 all over again. I would invalidate all the marriage-y / couple-y things they’ve said to each other. So if they’re going to go down that path at all, it better end at a honeymoon cottage. Ah, a real one this time, even though the train was awesome in every way.

      • thinkling says:

Oops. It (backing off) would invalidate…

  31. jason says:

I’ve been joking about morgan being attached to chuck’s hip the way shaw was attached to sarah in season 3, I have never really thought it, but real life, zac might have to consider a restraining order, can he make an appearnance either alone without the little bearded elf or maybe once with yvonne – not going to impact the show that much I am sure, but with gomez’s clinging to zac in public (do they date?), the way TPTB talk and talk and talk about morgan and the way the lies come out of chuck’s mouth – just sort of wonder sometimes – by the way, I do think the season is going to be great – but just saying, come on already, geez

  32. jason says:

faith, if you are still hanging around, how is the mood in NBC land? I am still afraid chuck won’t come clean with the secret liar, hope I am wrong, the season would just be so much better if he does. From every indication, sarah is ‘all in’, pretty amazing …. but chuck sort of drifts in and out of cluelessness all 3 seasons prior, I just hope he man’s up in 4×1 and the chuck vs pinocchio part of the arc can move on, he will tell her everything, just not sure about the cave. will know soon enough.

    • ChuckNewbie8 says:

It’s good. A lot of excitement in the air especially with the epks.

Previously I think there were two or three designated poo poo ers of anything hinting negativity but I haven’t really seen much of that of late. Of course I’ve been largely vocal of my disatisfaction of the lying gate but with today’s epks I’m sure that discussion will heat up. There’s even a bet joke that if Chuck does lie, I’ll be upset. Of course I call that a sucker bet. Coz love after all is for suckers 🙂

Apart from that, I’d say it’s a lot better than during the Chuckapocalypse. Of course it helps that the mods are friendly 😉 haha.

  33. thinkling says:

Loved the clips. I think the bold new direction will be fantastic … everything amped way up for humor, action, drama, and romance. Love the new, old Beckman.

Yes, Newbie, the interview with Yvonne confirmed what we’ve expected as trust issues. But I liked that she also affirmed that C&S have good intentions. Hope that one issue is settled quickly and … honestly.

  34. Judy says:

    The Beckman scenes are terrific!

  35. Big Kev says:

Everything I’m seeing and hearing about S4 is making me think it’s going to be sensational – but I do have a question about promos and sneak peeks.
NBC have only done one promo for the premiere – but they’re happy to put 10 mins of spoilers on one of their sites, which costs them nothing.
So is it a fair assumption to say that NBC isn’t expecting any new viewers for the show, and is happy just to fire up existing viewers (who presumably know that the show is coming back, without the aid of promotion)?
Makes me think that anything with a 2 after it for the premiere ratings is probably going to be a good result – and also makes me think that NBC might not be too unhappy with that.
    Thoughts?

    • Buy More Associate says:

      @big kev–
the material on epk.tv aren’t spoilers. It’s material for media outlets. It’s a form of promotion. It works as spoilers, of course, but epk is a way to disseminate clips and such to TV stations, web sites, etc. So NBC (or any network) does not do epk in lieu of promos and other paid stuff.

As for NBC’s plans and expectations of ratings, I have no idea. But if the show drew even a 2.0 with the lack of promotion, it’d be a miracle. My guess is the show gets a 1.8 for episode one…

  36. rac2873 says:

Watch the B Role footage. That is a great scene and it hopefully puts some issues to rest. Sarah is so adorable in those clips.
