More Than A Festivus For The RestofUs

Dear Readers and Denizens of Chuck This!

October is not sweeps month for the networks, but it is the time when networks begin to contemplate their schedules and the fates of their offerings. Likewise, it’s a time when corporations start to plan their advertising strategies and consider how they will spend their advertising dollars.

Two seasons ago the fans of Chuck discovered that they had substantially more clout than was apparent in the ratings numbers. In hindsight, it was the loyalty, commitment and even their savvy that made a difference in the famous “Subway” campaign, not the number of viewers.

Today, Chuck’s ratings are solid, if not spectacular, and it’s future prospects are good, if not assured. We don’t need to go and buy one of every product advertised on the show. However, it would be to the fan’s benefit to let the advertisers know that we appreciate their continued patronage and support of Chuck. They should know that we are smart consumers who fully intend to consider them when we are in the market for their type of product.

Here’s the plan!

After Monday’s episode Starting NOW, we will be listing the show’s sponsors and products. Because different ads are shown in different regions of the country, we ask your help in making this list. Let us know in the comments if we missed any sponsors or got one wrong! For a day or two after the shows airing we’ll be publishing the contact information so that we can tell them directly that their patronage is appreciated. So we also ask your help in making sure the information is complete and correct! If you locate an on-line contact for a sponsor (that’s e-mail, web-sites, Facebook and Twitter) that you don’t see on the list, please tell us in the comments and we’ll add it, with our thanks.

Finally, as you can, we ask you to use these contacts and thank them for their support.

We’ll even prepare a template that thanks them for you! All you’ll have to do is cut, click on the link and paste, fill in the name of the advertiser, and send it off.

In addition, we invite you to “follow” them on Facebook or Twitter and simply say “I’m following you because you support Chuck!”

The template will be a convenient way to thank those advertisers and let them know that their dollars were not wasted, but instead used in the most effective manner that TV has to offer. Of course, your own words have even more effect, so don’t be afraid to express yourself, and certainly, don’t think for a moment that your words carry no weight with them.

We plan on partnering with as many Chuck related sites as possible, so once we get going, please tweet, post, email, and share so we can show the advertisers a truer sense of the scope of Chuck fans.  Make yourself heard!

So are you ready? The links and ways to thank the advertisers for supporting Chuck are below the fold! Come back often for updates!

And Thank You for supporting this effort!

– Amy, Dave, Ernie & Joe

I just sent Team ChuckThis the list for every advertiser in the North Carolina viewing area for the first three episodes. I will also compile the list for my viewing area tomorrow.

I’ll share with the rest of you that of the 69 advertisers I wrote down (not including NBC promoting itself-believe me, The Event and Chase ads got old quick!), only 5 of them DIDN’T have a Facebook page!

I think we have an opportunity here to get more support for the show. The ratings are steady and they know we are a loyal bunch. If we can further offset production costs by rallying advertisers, it makes it that much easier for NBC to renew (it’s less expensive to them).

    Hey, it’s worth a shot!

  2. Jen says:

Guys, this is a great idea n I’ll be watching those commercials carefully n making note of them. I really appreciate the time n care you all take to think up strategies to help the show n in providing this medium for all of us to discuss our favorite show. I’ve been absent for a couple of reasons, but been trying to read as many as the comments as I can. I’ll try to come back 😉

    • amyabn says:

Jen, welcome back. We hope you can stick around! And thanks for the kind words and willingness to help. I think this is a unique opportunity to see how the ad world reacts.

  3. atcdave says:

I will mention this again we start listing actual advertisers; but I think it is so important to be polite, enthusiastic, and honest when communicating with sponsors. For myself, I’m a Ford guy, and no matter how much I appreciate Honda or Toyota advertising on Chuck I’m not going to lie and say I’ll buy or test drive one of their products. But some product I do use, can you say Subway, I will (and have already in that case, but it never hurts to write again!) happily tell the sponsor I like their product and make a point of eating there more often than I used to because of their support of Chuck.

    • amyabn says:

I hear you Dave. I think for those types of big ticket advertisers (we all can’t run out and buy a new car-plus I’m a GM girl) we just make note that we appreciate their advertising on Chuck. No fake promises, nothing more than a thank you and perhaps a “follow” on their FB page.

    • joe says:

Oh sure! The idea is to THANK them for what they’ve already done! The message is that 1) their ad dollars were not wasted and 2) they should do it again!

The last message is that this is NOT what your normal audience would do. Not all audiences are created equal and Nielsen numbers don’t tell the whole story.

We’re showing them that we pay attention.

      • Jen says:

Agreed Amy, this is a unique opportunity to see how the ad world reacts. It’s also an opportunity for companies to rethink their advertising methods. They shld take advantage of a show like Chuck n its fandom to try a new method to reach the audience n to measure viewership.

  4. Gringo Chuck Fan says:

Chucktoberfest…. I gotta admit, when I read your title, I was kinda hoping you were going to have a big beer tent setup someplace… complete with Jeff and Lester in traditional lederhosen… ah well, maybe next year…
Anyhow, one other thing I might add, and I’m not sure how this could get orchestrated – is to thank NBC directly. Not the typical pleading/begging or reasoning for them to keep our favorite show…
but a clear and overwhelming thank you for what they have done up until now.
Then perhaps we could do some kind of appreciation for the Cast and crew closer to Christmas?
Regardless – This is an excellent idea: to support the folks that support Chuck! Well done.

    • amyabn says:

GCF-I think thanking NBC is a great idea. How about a Thanksgiving campaign to say thanks for Chuck? Even if we don’t know about a back 6/9 or Season 5, I think it would be nice and very gracious to say thanks.

      • BdaddyDL says:

A thank you would be great, especially if we get 9 more episodes!

Even if we do not, this show has given me a passion for writing again.

Plus, I got to be involved with this great community. At the end of the day the time I have spent will be worth it.

    • joe says:

Gee! I sorta like the idea of a big beer bash myself! 😉

      • Ernie Davis says:

So we find a beer sponsor for Chuch, everyone buy a six pack for the last episode in Chucktober. Simple.

      • amyabn says:

Well Ernie, Stella Artois is a sponsor as is Budweiser. I’m a beer snob, so i’ll vote for a Stella!

      • Ernie Davis says:

        We has beer bash.

Pick your beer, and provided you are legally able, purchase and join in! Make sure to send a nice note to the sponsor of your chosen beer.

      • ChuckNewbie8 says:

I always joke about this with Gord but…how are we going to tell Canada we appreciate their patronage? lol. I see at least 2 commercials during my broadcast of Canada.

As for the beer…I’m there! I’m usually more for vodka but I can do beer.

      • Ernie Davis says:

OK, buy a Canadian beer! Canadians love beer! 🙂

  5. savechucknow says:

This is a really good idea I linked to this page from my Save Chuck blog It has all the ideas everyone has so far to help Chuck, everyone who hasn’t been their should check it out.

    • joe says:

Many thanks for the link, SCN!
I especially like your idea of using Reward TV to show advertisers that we pay attention.

I meant to highlight it (again) in this post, but you can be sure I’ll be linking to it again during the week.

  6. cj says:

what i gotta buy to keep chuck on air i became a supper fan after my good friend brought me the first two seasons then i watched season three and now im hooked i stayed up almost three days in a row to watch the first two seasons

    • joe says:

Hi, cj. Gee! I’m impressed! I hope when you got some sleep after that your dreams were good!

But next time, take your time and savor each moment, my friend. There are just too many good scenes, memories and music to rush through. My favorite thing to do now is put on the music I’ve collected from Chuck and just think about the scenes where the songs were played.

I hope you can help us with our little campaign here!

  7. Phoenix says:

What can we do to support Chuck and NBC from Australia? I don’t see the Aussie televised Chuck so I have no idea what adverts might be on… it’s on anytime between 10pm and 1am so obviously they don’t give a rats about Chuck anyway!!

I’d like to do something, so any suggestions would be gratefully received….. I live for Chuck, especially season 4 😀

    • ChuckNewbie8 says:

I imagine if there were any sponsors stateside that exist there in Australia it would work just as well.

Think of it this way during Season 2’s save Chuck, buy a subway finale campaign people from England (of which there is a subway) participated. In fact if I”m not mistaken the person that came up with that idea is from the UK.

    • joe says:

Phoenix, realistically speaking, there really isn’t much that you can do. The sponsors and the network Powers That Be are looking at some very specific things that surprisingly few people can actually give them. Since I’m older than 49, even *I’m* not in their “desired demographic.”

But I’m not despondent over it. I have this continuing fantasy that someone like Josh Schwartz or Jeff Zucker has actually seen this site and read our words. It’s possible, and you never know when you can make a difference.

Who knows? Maybe the first person to see your comment will become the new head of NBC-Universal when Comcast takes over, and because of what you said, realizes that ignoring the Australian audience is a dumb business move.

Far fetched, yes. But it’s not impossible that you already made a difference.

    • amyabn says:

Phoenix, first let me say welcome! I think if all of our international fans were to write the US sponsors, it would make a difference.

The reason I say that (for you and all of our international friends) is that it lets the advertiser know there is a large audience for Chuck, one that doesn’t “count” when they use the antiquated Nielsen system. Anything we can collectively do to show what a huge following Chuck has is good. Perhaps the advertiser expands to your market at some point.

  8. Phoenix says:

Thanks.. I’ll look down the list and contact the companies I recognise from over here.
Are there any major companies or are they all equally important?

  9. Rick Holy says:

I’m on board – and will contact as many as time allows. GREAT IDEA!!

  10. rac2873 says:

Don’t forget about Reward TV. It is a neilsen company that test you on the commericals and the show. It measures the interactivity of the audience and determines if you are really watching the adds.

This is data Neilsen uses and provides to advertisers. Every Chuck fan should do this. I did it last week. It is hard but well worth the time.

  13. ChuckNewbie8 says:

Amy if we find other companies that aren’t on the list should we post them here or email them?

For example I get citi ads on my west coast broadcast, norton when watching online (

    • amyabn says:

Thanks CN8! If you can flesh out the details like we have above for your local advertiser and send it via email, it will allow us to cut and paste into the main post.

      Keep ’em coming Chucksters!

  14. Mel says:

There were at least 3 Verizon ads during tonight’s episode, mostly for Droid and their Rule The Air campaign. I am in the MSP (Minneapolis/St. Paul) area.

We also had a Progressive Insurance ad

    • joe says:

Mel, thanks so much for chasing down these links! I’ll put them into the list above.

Don’t forget the next step, everyone. As you can, click on one or two and thank the sponsors. Use Twitter to put it front and center. Send our message.

And THANK YOU for doing that.

  15. Rick Holy says:

I’ve already received several email responses from the companies that I contacted – and they’re not just those auto-generated responses. SOMEONE is actually looking at them – so they ARE getting noticed. Keep plugging away people. Do a few at a time and eventually you’ll get through the list.

And don’t forget – as Joe is so good at reminding us – to re-watch the episodes on NBC.COM. Every little bit helps.

    • joe says:

Awww – you’re not surprised that someone’s actually looking now, are you??? 😉

I realized something too, over the weekend. The economy being what it is, companies (larger ones in particular) have been reducing the staff that actually handles things like like. I’m guessing that instead of a handful of people looking at incoming customer e-mails, there’s now, routinely, only one or two people per corporate office.

If those one or two people see only a few e-mails with the same message, they’re quite liable to mention it in the next staff meeting. They’re supposed to be the weather vanes that show which way the wind is pointing, after all.

From our keyboards to the CEO’s ears!

  16. joe says:

The credits at the end of last night’s episode, Coup D’Etat, stated “Promotional considerations” were to Subway, Subaru Toyota and Microsoft. Please make an extra effort to thank them for their sponsorship.

    • ChuckNewbie8 says:

Don’t you mean Toyota? Mine said Toyota (gathered from sienna plug).

      • joe says:

Oops. You’re absolutely right, Faith. You’re not gonna believe this, but I actually had Toyata there originally, decided that I had remembered incorrectly and changed it.

Didn’t my mama ever tell me to not second guess myself???

  17. Pingback: Vs. Chuck się trzyma, fani doceniają reklamodawców…

    • joe says:

      Why, Thank You! Dziękują!

This seems to be a very nice write-up.
The link sent me to a Polish Chuck website. I translated what was there using a free on-line service. Okay – It’s rough, but you get the idea. It says:

Chuck is kept. Fans appreciate the advertisers…
This week, when all other shows were said to experience a ratings decreased because of popular sporting events, Chuck was the only show to experience ratings stability. It saw an audience this week of 5.325 million, and 1.9 million in the 18-49 demographic. Let’s hope that NBC will appreciate the loyalty of Chuck’s fans.

These fans have decided to let advertisers know about Chucktoberfest during the month of October. During this time, they are expressing their thanks to the advertisers for sponsoring the show. Such mass-efforts by the fans have come to the shows aid before, saving it from cancellation by buying Subway (sandwiches).

This is probably the first time that fans are willing to have advertisers. That probably won’t help in Poland, unfortunately.

Then they link to this page.

      How cool is that!

  18. Faith says:

I’ve posted a couple of twitter directed #Chucktoberfest posts. It’s easy enough to just retweet them if desired. In theory a direct email would probably be better, but this probably doesn’t hurt. Also easy to follow them this way.
