A Fan Fiction Poll

For those of you read fan fiction, we’ve had an interesting challenge sent to to us by bdaddydl.  I’ll let him tell his own story after the jump.

So I was reading a question on Twitter that MXPW posed. It was about what Chuck Fan Fics we reread.  It got me to thinking; I wonder what would be my top 5 fics of all time.  After a few days of changing it countless times, I came upon the realization that I was having fun trying to (-get) (+create) my list.  Inspiration was not far behind this epiphany.

Could others have fun with this too?

So I went on twitter and asked a few people who have unofficially become a book club for fics. Uplink, Big Kev67, DWNACrumby, JoeltotheD, and last, but not least, alladinsgenie4u responded. For some reason a poll entered my mind. On FF the Awesome awards have just concluded, congrats to all the great winners by the way. (You can find them here http://forum.fanfiction.net/topic/49974/42966453/1/#43287923) I was thinking the Awesomes’ are just for one year, and pick a winner. What if we tried to find the five best fics of all time?  A kind of people’s choice awards for Chuck fan fiction.

When I brought this idea up to the group, Crumby, added a brilliant idea. We should include a universe as one story. For example What Fates Impose has oodles of companion stories. The bright side of life verse, from Notorius JMG, and SharpasMarble’s wonderful series of stories come to mind. Than the question was asked “What about one shots.”  So I thought, there are countless one shots who never seem to get acclaim.

So, let’s make it more interesting and include the top five short fics. I decided to define short by chapters, and not words. (The FF site has problems with word counts. Don’t want to bore you with minutia.)

A great example of this is Chuck and Sarah vs the Force Field by Farringtongirl. It is 3 chapters, but it does not go into the depth that a “multi chapter fic does” it basically covers one event. Another example is Tuesdays by Armadilloi. So I think a fic between 1-5 chapters is a good place for Short stories.

Finally, in my opinion, the toughest category of all, the five best authors. Most of us have our first couple picked out, but what about three, four, or five best authors:  Brickroad, Frea, LEECAN, NinjaVanish, MySoapBox, Timewalker05, FromPentoPaper, the whole CIA gang, BillatWork, Poa…. See what I mean, (and that’s the short list).

When I decided to do this, there was a couple of things I felt were important:

First, anonymity. The authors who write Fan fiction are mostly not professionals. They do it for practice, training, and for the love of writing. I do not want to hurt someones feelings by letting anyone know how many votes someone receives. The only way I can think of accomplishing this is to contactme through DM on twitter @Bdaddydl, Email Bdaddydl@Gmail.com, and FanFiction http://www.fanfiction.net/u/2353759/BDaddyDL I welcome any other suggestions.

Secondly, It is my hope that it’s not just the newer stories that get nominated. For example, LeeCan’s, Only Two Options, was completed in September of ‘08.  Another is revelations by MySoapBox that was completed of May of 09.  The fandom has a diverse history. It amazes me how good they are, and how close some of the older stories come to future cannon.

If you want some suggestions of some great stories or authors, please feel free to look at my favorites, or even better ATC Dave’s http://www.fanfiction.net/u/2347669/

I am debating having a second round to get to the final 5 in each category. Please let me know if you think that’s a good idea.  This way people can vote again when they realize they forgot a great author or story.

Now I had to pass this on since he linked my favorites list (!).   But this does seem like a fun poll.  And it lead to a really good discussion via e-mail this afternoon.  A few things I’d like to bring out.  For starters, the big question here is “best of all time” (well, four years anyway!).  This is going to be tough.  There is a huge volume of good stuff out there.  I wanted to be sure to pass on there is no slight intended to anyone who doesn’t get mentioned.  With over 2500 entries in the Chuck setting (not including cross-overs and “adult” material) limiting down to 5 stories, short stories, and authors will be very intimidating; and many excellent choices will have to be left off in all three of the categories.  I’m not taking this lightly, I still haven’t made my picks.  I’ve got a couple ideas, but getting past 2 or 3 in each category will be very hard.

Don’t be shy!  You’ve got an opinion and you know how to use it!

 – Dave

      @bdaddyl, Dave,

      >> my top 5 fics of all time.

      Cool!

      >> First, anonymity.
      >> I do not want to hurt someones feelings by letting anyone know how many votes someone receives.

I am not sure I would agree with you here. Since this would be open to anyone that has ever posted on the fanfiction website and we’re talking top 5; the writers selected are already a cut above the rest. My stuff wouldn’t even be in the running. Heck, if someone were to even mentioned one of my stories, I’d be tickled pink. And no, I won’t tell you I am over there! Ha! To be compared to Frea or Armadilloi, indeed!

I do think you might need a few more categories, however. Best Pure Charah, Best Pure Spy, Best Comedy, Best Smut, Best Adorable Psycho.

      eh, my two cents…

      Michael

  2. patty says:

Guys, there is absolutely no way I could pick only 5 (or 10) I have a whole huge folder of links so I could stop searching for stuff I forgot the name of! My nook is stuffed with the files Frea has posted for download. (more fanfics than books!) Even if I eliminated the obvious stuff like Frea and Armadillio I still have way too much!

    • BDaddyDL says:

Right now I would like to see some nominations, and than ill make a list to make your decision easier.
I picked 5 because it would be tough. We have a long hot summer before Chuck comes again, and a lot of people still dont know the older fics, or even some of the new ones. I am hoping this can help expand their reading list.
Besides, its fun to figure out who would you pick more. For example what is the better story revelations or green eyed girl. So please nominate away.

    • atcDave says:

I sort of cheated Patty, I added about a dozen honorable mentions to my top 5!

(the poll was his idea, so make bdaddy sort ’em out!)

  3. BDaddyDL says:

Crumby asked if I knew if I had a list of the awesome award nominations in the first year. So I got in touch with MyNameIsJeffandI’mLost and asked. Boy did he deliver”
