If Wishes Were Fishes…

“If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.”

– Orson Wells

Season Five of Chuck begins soon. There’s something about this season that’s going to be different from all the rest. [Joe taps his forehead] What is it? What is it?

Oh! I know. It’s going to be the the last season.

Actually, there’s something familiar about that too. Seems like every season of Chuck came with the distinct possibility of being the last. The Fans knew it, the cast knew it and and the show runners knew it. With every season came the urgent need to bring things to some sort of satisfactory ending and to give the fans some sort of closure. So if you wanted Sarah to admit that she felt something for Chuck, well, we got that at the end of Season 1, on a roof top in Burbank when she told Long Shore that Chuck was “her guy” in The Marlin. Did you want something more? At the end of Season 2, we got Barstow, Chuck losing the Intersect and Chuck getting the Intersect. He got the girl.

Of course, in Season 3, Chuck and Sarah got their first honeymoon (what an ending!) and nine episodes later, Chuck became a full fledged spy by defeating his enemy and rival.

But there were still some family issues left to tie up, so in Season 4, Chuck found his mother. Oh, and he and Sarah made it permanent. I like it. So each season has, in it’s own way, is a conclusion to the saga.

Of course, like Orson Wells told us, the story didn’t stop just because we have happy endings. Storytellers, being who they are, ended each season with something unfinished; the proverbial cliff hanger to lead us into the next. Each stepping stone has made the series seem more (dare I say it?) epic to many of the fans. I won’t deny that it did just that for me.

But what can we hope and wish for now that the only deep threat to Chuck and Sarah’s continued happiness is – Jeffster? What is it we hope to see addressed in Season 5? What are our fondest hopes and wishes, now that the presumptive #1 wish (Chuck&Sarah together and married) is checked off our list? I know I have a few left, things I want to see accomplished before we’re through, above and beyond resolution to the final threat left by Clyde Decker.

I’ll tell you what I don’t need to see on screen first, though. I’m alright with Bryce not returning, except maybe in flash back. Or Jill Roberts either, for that matter. They’re both part of Chuck’s past, and that’s enough for me. PLIs have no place in the show now, except maybe as they reminisce, while the Judy Collins version of The Beatles In My Life plays in the background. That would be nice.

For the same reason, I’m okay if “Omaha” isn’t brought up again. Chuck’s not going to ask about it, because it’s between Sarah and Bryce, and Chuck is the kind to respect her privacy about that. I’ll be happy if they do.

Oddly, I don’t need to see Chuck regain the Intersect. I’ve seen one promotional clip from S5 that shows him handling himself quite well without it, thank you very much. The GRETAs told us, and it’s true, that the Intersect is a burden, and Chuck simply doesn’t need the skills it provides any more; he’s got his own, and in many ways, they’re superior. I won’t mind it if he does regain it, because, you know, once a super hero, always a super hero. But from the beginning Chuck’s dream has been to be normal. Perhaps he knows now that this is something he really can’t have, because there’s no such thing. As it is, Chuck and Sarah are unique. Together, they are extraordinary and that remains true with or without the Intersect.

As for what I would like to see on screen, there are only a few things. I would finally, definitively like to know if Sarah Lisa Walker-Bartowski has a sister, like she said early in Season 1. Was that an impromptu cover story? Was that a seed left to germinate all this time, until the issue of Sarah’s family could be addressed? If so, now that Sarah has in-laws who know she’s been a spy, it doesn’t seem like it’s something she can’t cop to. It would be worth a scene with Ellie and Devon at the proper moment. And if she actually has a sister, I’d love to be introduced.

But it hardly changes things either way! I’m just curious to know.

I definitely want to see Morgan and Alex stay together, or even engaged. My prediction is that, although we’re going to have the Morgansect for more episodes than many fans want, he’ll ultimately be rid of it. Mark my words now; that will happen with Alex’s help. I’d love to see her become the season’s next big hero, the way Morgan was many times for S4.

I want to see Jeffster remain an existential threat to Chuck&Sarah’s happiness. Or at least, to Ellie’s. Baring that, they can take their show on the road.

I would still like to see Casey and Kathleen get together, if only for Alex’s sake. It’s odd how I’ve come to care about Casey’s happiness – he was a robot in the beginning, especially in the way he handled Bryce. But now there’s a real person in there somewhere. I have no idea how Gertrude Verbanski works into this, and I fear her presence may turn Kathleen into Casey’s “Anna Melinda Wu”. We’ll see how that goes.

The next thing I wish for in Season 5 is the answer to an unspoken mystery! Here’s the set up: Sarah is deep into Volkoff’s organization and proving herself to him. As far as Alexei is concerned, she’s been turned just like Frost was turned twenty years earlier. Chuck can’t stop him (Chuck only has office supplies and Morgan to help him) and Orion is dead. Except… Chuck is awfully good with plans and there’s that threatening message from Orion.

I WANT MY WIFE BACK.

OrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrion
OrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrion
OrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrion
OrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrion
OrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrion
OrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrion
OrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrionOrion

Just because this happens before we have any indication that Chuck actually has a plan (much less implemented it), and just because this first message from Orion is never referred to again, I have a glimmer of a shred of a piece of a hope that it really came from Orion, that Stephen lives.

We don’t eat until your father’s at the table

Yeah, yeah. I know. A resurrection too far. But I’d still like to see it.

Finally, the next thing I’d love to see is Sarah reunited with her mother, maybe played by, oh, I don’t know, maybe Cheryl Ladd.

Oh, wait…

Oddly enough, I’m with you on the return of Orion, Joe.

TPTB pretty much indicated that they don’t have any limits when they brought Shaw back in S3. So, bring back Stephen Bartowski; they’ve had 2 resurrections, why not a third?

Scott Bakula would certainly make it interesting, and it would undo some of the damage done by the showrunners in S3.

In any event, here’s hoping for a great S5.

    • joe says:

Oh yeah, VV. He’s the character I identify with most strongly. The introduction of Mary this season makes his return seem even more imperative. I mean, it just doesn’t seem complete without Stephen.

  2. mxpw says:

Reading your list, I realize we want pretty different things, Joe. Except for being okay with Chuck not getting the Intersect back. I agree with that.

My wishlist? Sexytimes. That’s what I want. Chuck and Sarah sexytimes.

Is that really too much to ask for?

  3. atcDave says:

I like your vision Joe! Although I don’t really need Orion back, but otherwise I agree with all that. Have I mentioned recently that I’m very excited? Just in case anyone forgot….

    • joe says:

As I was writing this, Dave, I started to realize I was giving them a lot of leeway. I think the fans in general are too. TPTB have a great deal of freedom this time to move the story any way they want, so long as only a few outstanding questions are answered, I suspect.

I’m not too concerned about Gertrude Verbanski vs. Kathleen at all, for instance.

Hey! One thing I left out, only semi-intentionally, is the idea of Sarah announcing a pregnancy. You know, if an announcement like that was the very conclusion of the series, I would be very happy.

      • atcDave says:

Yeah I suppose Gertrude vs Kathleen is a pretty small issue to me; although my first impulse is to prefer Kathleen (over a character we haven’t even met yet!).
I think ending with a Bartowski pregnancy is pretty high on my wish list too. I’m wondering if Chuck and Sarah may end up with an adopted little one earlier on too (we know there’s a child involved in 5.08; and I’ve seen a few pics recently of cast members with stuffed animals, makes me wonder if the child will be a more prolonged presence on set). An adopted Bartowski child is not a huge issue to me, although I HOPE its not Sarah’s, that she previously neglected to mention to Chuck; but I think its highly unlikely they would go that way anyway. My guess is we’re seeing the kid of a client or former co-worker, that will suddenly bring out Sarah’s maternal instincts.

      • joe says:

Hum. I have a feeling that the child on set will be an interesting twist in the story. But like you, I don’t think she’s Sarah’s, Dave. Possibly, Sarah’s an aunt, but I doubt it.

There could certainly be any number of explanations. I’ll be interested to see where they go with that.

      • thinkling says:

I’ve rolled the baby thing around in my head a lot, and I really don’t think it’s Sarah’s … for lots of reasons. It’s very plausible that she’s another young Sarah for flashbacks with mom (can we have a Sarah/parent episode without flashbacks?), or she could need protecting. But I just don’t think there’s any way she’s Sarah’s. I also think a mid-season adoption is highly doubtful.

(IMDB puts Rachel Eggleston, AKA Molly, at the 4-7 age range)

      • mxpw says:

Regarding the baby thing, unless the spoilers were wrong or misleading, we already know that the child actor that has been popping up in spoiler photos lately is not Clara or a flashback Sarah. Which makes sense, considering there’d need to be a time jump of several years before Clara is the same age as the actor (and since 5.08 takes place in the middle of the season, a time jump is highly unlikely), and they’ve already got actors for flashback Sarah (not to mention the kid they cast looks nothing like Yvonne, she’s not even blonde).

Sarah having a secret child would be the single worst thing this show has ever done. It would be like the Sham arc and the Red Test combined. And then multiplied by 10. It would be a true shark jumping moment. I sincerely hope that they don’t go there.

Hell, in fact, I change my mind. My single biggest wish for S5 is that this kid has absolutely no personal connection to Sarah at all.

      • atcDave says:

Wow guess I’m a really bad judge of kid’s ages! Yeah I think having it be any relation Sarah would be a bad move. Although it could be an orphan of a former partner or orphaned as the consequence of a mission or something. If “Molly” is only in the single episode the connection is probably not too terribly close.

But as I said, I’m betting the main issue is she’ll warm Sarah towards the idea of having kids.

      • joe says:

        Dave, you’re a bad judge of kid’s ages! 😉

You have me slapping my forehead (“I coulda had a V8!” style). I think you have it exactly. Pure speculation here, not a spoiler – but I’m sure you got it. Molly warms Sarah to the idea of children.

Ha! Fedak! Your secret is out! 😀

  4. Gord says:

I’m not so concerned about Chuck getting the intersect back, as much as wanting Morgan to be de-intersected. If anyone on the show is going to have the intersect it should be Chuck. Morgan as the intersect makes about as much sense to me as the love trapezoid in S3.

As for the baby episode, I think that will be an episode where Chuck and Sarah have to babysit Clara, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up being an homage to the movie Undercover Blues. I could just see Chuck and Sarah having to fight bad guys with Clara in tow.

I would also love to see an episode with both Papa B and Mama B together – even if it was a series of flashbacks.

    • atcDave says:

I loved Undercover Blues and it would be fun to see something in that vein. I’m thinking the little girl they cast looks a little old for Clara (I’m not a great judge of these things, she’s what 2 or 3? Maybe that’s just fine for Clara especially if a little time was skipped).

  5. Henry says:

Did anyone watch the video from team Coco Live cam (that I have no idea whatever is…)?
YS with long hair (extensions?) looks a lot like Mrs. Charleezes there, talking about resurrections…

  6. Ella says:

Chuck doesn´t have to have Intersect back but please, TPTB, get IS from that idiot Morgan. He wasn´t funny before, and he certainly isn´t going to be funny now.
I would love to see Stephen Bartowski back – and I know that Scott Bakula would love to go back, he said it by himself. And I think there was a hint at the end of S4 where that Richard Burgi agent said something like “you thought this all was the truth?”. what if most of the stuff that happened to Chuck was some sort of a plan? I can´t wait to find out – and I hope S5 will be better than S4 that was….weak.

  7. thinkling says:

First of all great post Joe. It’s so much fun to wish, especially if it’s just all for fun … which for me it is mostly.

I’ll follow you’re pattern and start with the things I don’t need/want to see. Oh, and this is not an exhaustive list. I’m sure I can come up with more in each category.

    DON’T WANT
~ Obviously I do not want any marital upheaval or trope. Realistic is fine, but no big, heavy deals or LI threats or anything like that.
    ~ No resurrections, please.
~ Don’t want Morgansect to dominate.

    DON’T NEED, BUT WOULD’NT MIND
    ~ A Morgan/Alex engagement
    ~ Chuck regaining the Intersect
~ Return of Bryce in the form of a flashback

    WOULD LIKE, BUT DON’T REQUIRE
~ Return of Stephen in the form of a flashback
    ~ A CS pregnancy
~ Casey and Kathleen back together
~ Sarah and her mom reconciled
~ A good CS dance (I bet I’m not alone … Amy? Faith?)
~ Return of LH (actually that could go in the list of things I really want)

    REALLY WANT
~ Chuck and Sarah awesome spy couple, working together seamlessly, with humor, affection, and heart.
~ Chuck and Sarah happily married … in love, committed, passionate.
    ~ Sarah’s birthday.
~ Family times (I know we have Christmas, yay)
    ~ Bartowski family spy missions
~ CS kid/family-planning talk and Sarah warming to the idea of children gradually throughout the season (doesn’t even have to be verbal, given Yvonne’s amazing face)
~ Satisfying spy story and closure with all of that
    ~ A back 9 😀

    • joe says:

Heh! A much better list than mine, Thinkling!

      Very good stuff.
Oh yeah, I’d love to see Sarah and Emma reconciled. I may have to put that on my “must have” list.

    • atcDave says:

Excellent list Thinkling! I like all of that.

    • Verkan_Vall says:

From your fingertips to TPTBs’ ears.

    • amyabn says:

Love your list! And YES! We haven’t had a good dance sequence. To add to it:
-I want Mary and Ellie being protective of Sarah when her mom shows up; they reenforce Sarah’s being a Bartowski. I want Sarah to introduce her family (Chuck, Casey, Ellie, etc).
-I would like a bit more Sarah and Casey. I feel like the extended “Yoga Seal” scene in Push Mix robbed us of what looked like a Sarah-Casey hug (strange editing choice). It would be nice to see Sarah giving Casey relationship advice.
I wouldn’t mind Orion coming back. I am a sap for happy endings and I’d like to understand the romance and dynamic between Mary and Stephen. An older version of Sarah and Chuck. Epic fight scene ala First Fight for them?

      • thinkling says:

Great additions, I love the idea of Mary and Ellie sticking up for Sarah and Sarah introducing her husband and family and extended family! I guess I should have added that I’d like to see more female Bartowski interaction. I love what we got in S4, and I’d like to see some more. We saw a mix of Sarah/Mary interaction and the beginning of mother/daughter-in-law interaction at the rehearsal dinner. I want more, please.

Sarah giving Casey relationship advice … what a hoot. Yes!

It would be good to see some Stephen/Mary stuff, but I’d still prefer flash back, not that it wouldn’t be cool to have the whole Bartowski clan together, but I don’t know about the resurrection thing … unless they can be convincing about how it happened.

I totally agree about Push Mix. I’ve always felt gipped by their cutting out the Sarah/Casey hug. What were they thinking, the biggest deal of Gobbler, and they left out the resolution. They surely could have cut a few seconds from Morgan’s laser gauntlet or even Jeffster. Sometimes their choices really don’t make sense to me.

      • Ernie Davis says:

Like the Bartowski baby, any voluntary Casey hug must be saved for the very last episode. 😉

    • Faith says:

Dance, date, romance ;). Mostly passion.

I’m worried that wishes are turning into expectations and expectations are dangerous. Not that we shouldn’t have them, but more they shouldn’t cloud what will be Chuck’s last season. Because of that I’m on a take it and see mode and though I too have my own list (which I’ll add below) these are more spitting in the wind, whiling away a Sunday morning kind of thing and if it happens it happens, if it doesn’t, I’m sure I’ll still have a good time.

      – Sarah’s sister
      – Bryce or Jill
      – Flashbacks to Chuck’s high school years
      – A finale that is more Push Mix, and less Cliffhanger, more Colonel than Ring, more Subway than Other Guy
      – An commitment to the many thematic elements of the show throughout the season: especially drama and triumph
      – #SexyTimes
      – pregnancy (if not full, scare)
      – 5+ year epilogue
      – bracelet!
      – explosions
      – more Sarah & Ellie talks
      – More Ellie
      – supply closet
      – accents, wigs
      – Mr & Mrs. Charlesesez
      – Morgasey (Morgan, Awesome, Casey)
      – family therapy
      – Erica Durance!

I took out some of the things I know will happen.

      • Ernie Davis says:

I keep waiting for one of you ladies to say a Chuck wind machine moment from Sarah’s POV. For goodness sake Morgan, Jeff and Lester all got a wind machine entrance. Where is the Morgan hatred and your sense of indignation!? Where is the demand for Chuck’s wind machine entrance?

      • Faith says:

I’ve campaigned for that one Ernie ever since Bryce got one and so did Sh@w. But I think it’s a lost cause 😦 lol.

      • Ernie Davis says:

Sh@w had a wind machine moment?

      • herder says:

I very much would like to see a return of the Charleses, and it goes without saying more sexytimes.

      • joe says:

Hey wait! Have you seen the S5 promo for 5.1??? Two words. Sarah. Wind Machine.

(Yes, there are 3 kinds of mathematicians; those who can count and those who can’t.)

      • Faith says:

Yes but he’s so wooden, his whole body blew away. Ha! But seriously yeah he did.

      • thinkling says:

Ha, Joe. A variation: There are 10 types of people in the world … those who understand base 2 and those who don’t.

I’d be very happy with your list, Herder.

      • Ernie Davis says:

I seriously need info on this Sh@w wind machine moment… Shirtless answering the door does not equal wind machine. Wind machine moment is very specifically another character’s fantasy (or in the case of Jeffster slow-mo-horror-show) POV.

      • Faith says:

There’s a super-slo-mo wind-machine-esque moment in Subway. I seem to recall one with an actual wind machine but can’t recall specifically which episode/scene. I’ll let you know during my rewatch 🙂

      • Gord says:

With respect to Shaw’s wind machine moment – is that why I have so many leaves to rake up in my back yard?

    • herder says:

My list is a bit simpler, I want to see the Chuck and Sarah who will do anything for each other, this is the thinking behind both Phase 3 and Cliffhanger. I want to know why the intersect works for Chuck and not for others, why is he special. I would like to see a real talk between them about children (actual pregnancy need not be present) and I suspect that we will see that or at least see Sarah’s attitude towards them change when she sees Chuck with a child. I’m curious about this whole grand conspiracy thing and the story with Sarah’s mom. Other than that I’m open to being entertained by the ideas that the show brings forth.

      • Faith says:

We’re in complete agreement with all of that Herder. The Chuck and Sarah that would do anything for each other, why Chuck is special, these are things that are essential to Chuck.

      • atcDave says:

I’d love to see Chuck and Sarah working together with everything on the line. Let’s show why they are the real A Team.

  8. Tamara Burks says:

I absolute loathed Casey at first (except for shooting Bryce once I found out what Bryce had done , still haven’t changed my mind about that.) but he started to grow on me oddly enough in the ep where he was suppossed to kill Chuck and that’s because he spoke up for Chuck. That told us there was a human being hiding under that gruff exterior.

I want him to come to some sort of peace with Kathleen at the very least and apologize for basically dumping her with no notice. If he’d just dumped her instead of faking his death she could have gotten mad and gotten over him, instead she had to have built him up for the sake of thier daughter.

I would love for papa B to come back somehow so that Chuck and Ellie would have both parents back at the same time and the family would be complete.

If there’s any relationship strife , I would like it to include Sarah coming to realizations about how odd some of her behavior is.

I don’t mind Jeffster. In fact, I think it would be neat if they took down a bad guy , either by accident or design. Maybe by Decker drinking Jeff’s homemade booze.

    • joe says:

That’s exactly how I feel about a lot of that stuff too, Tamera. You nailed precisely the thoughts I’ve had about Casey and his relationship with Kathleen. You know, I sort of liked him with Ilsa Trinchina (in Undercover Lover) too. I was rooting for them. Not so much with Agent Alex Forrest (Broken Heart) though. She was too cold for my tastes and I always trust my tastes in female agents.

Interesting thought about how odd some of Sarah’s behavior has been. I never think so when it’s happening – it’s like I’d forgive Sarah Walker-Bartowski anything, you know? But she’s clearly had her moments.

Hasn’t Chuck’s behavior been even more odd, though? Except when he’s dealing with Sarah or Morgan, Chuck can be pretty weird, and he’s sometimes been very weird with Sarah. They do tend to bring out the worst and the best in each other. He’s human with Ellie a lot, but only after he’s gotten himself into trouble!

I’d grant that he reacts to Jeff and Lester the way I would (pretty much), but other than that…
      😉

  9. joe says:

Special alert! My S4 DVD just arrived from Amazon.

Guess who’s going to be busy tonight??!!

    • Gord says:

About time – I’m already finished rewatching up to the end of Push Mix again. I think I will make it through just in time for the premiere on the 28th.

  10. uplink2 says:

Ok I’m going to throw in my idea of who Molly is. First of all certainly not Sarah’s. A 4-7 year age would mean she was born during the 2 years Sarah was with Bryce or during Season 1. Now as we know Sarah was on missions and in Cabo with Bryce in 2005 from Breakup and the pilot and definitely not pregnant and we certainly know she wasn’t pregnant in season 1, I completely eliminate the possibility of her being Sarah’s. Second this is a LeJudkins episode and I expect it to be very heartwarming and uplifting.
What I see in the handler confronting her past etc is that the child is her handlers. He chose to get out of the life and have a family after some incident that maybe Sarah was involved in mission wise. She had told him how she was so career focused and became Graham’s wildcard enforcer. Somehow they meet Molly and Sarah sees her dad is her old handler and gets nervous about what he might tell Chuck. He will confront Sarah about her past and it will lead to her meeting her mom. Maybe he knows why she has such a strained relationship with her mom and the decision as to why she has broken off contact is what he will get her to confront. But he had a relationship and then a child and put family first which she will now have to do with her mom and Chuck and how that is everything she wants now.

    • lappers84 says:

This could be pretty plausible for a storyline. Of course would like to see a babysitting scene early in the episode and perhaps talk of their own kids as well as what you wrote Uplink, if so I’m already looking forward to it. 🙂

    • Wilf says:

I think Molly will be her former handler’s child, with her (Sarah’s) mother. That would explain her relationship with her mum and also allow her to have the sister who was mentioned long ago.

      Just my thoughts.

      • Aerox says:

Doubt it, unless the whole sunburn incident when Sarah was 9 is retconned out of existence. I’m guessing it’s either Sarah’s which causes pretty much everyone to immediately stop watching OR the more plausable one is that it’s Ryker and Emma’s in which case Uplinks theory proves to be the most plausable one.

      • thinkling says:

Well, Uplink is right. We can eliminate the possibility that she’s Sarah’s.

As to the spec that she is Emma’s with Ryker … sorry, no way Molly is Emma’s daughter by Ryker. Besides beingt too Days-of-Our-Lives-ish, it doesn’t make any sense. I suppose Ryker could have met Sarah’s mother, but it’s far more likely that they never met at all. There’s certainly would be no reason that they should have.

So I go with (a) she’s part of a current case — maybe needs protecting or (b) she is related to an old case or (c) she is Ryker’s.

      • ArmySFC says:

the kid being sarahs mom makes no sense to me. her mom is about 55. the kid is 7 at most. sarahs mom would have been about 48 or older to have her. granted its possible but way unlikely.

    • thinkling says:

Good spec Uplink. Whole-heartedly agree with your first paragraph. The spec is interesting, too. Whether Molly is Ryker’s kid or not, I think you’re right about what it stirs up and resolves with Sarah.

    • atcDave says:

That was a fun spec Uplonk, and it makes a lot of sense.

    • uplink2 says:

Just to add to my spec if she was born during the two years Sarah was with Bryce that would undoubtedly mean she was in fact Bryce’s child. They were in a relationship and if she got pregnant does anyone believe they would give up that child? Does anyone really think they would add that bombshell to this story with 5 episodes left? Even Fedak isn’t that dumb or devious. Plus LeJudkins have not been angst writers. Now true that can change as we saw with the ultimate shipper friendly writer, Ali Adler ended up writing what in my mind is the most hated, disgusting and horrible episode of the series. But adding a LeJudkins episode where Sarah kept a secret baby with Bryce from Chuck that they gave up especially seeing she and Chuck are now happily married is simply ridiculous paranoia on part of the fans who are still stung by what was done in season 3. Plus even though I will never trust or like Bryce Larkin they tried to resurrect his character in a more positive light, though it failed on me, and I don’t see them destroying that character 2 years after his death.

It just shows how much trust Fedak and the writers lost from the disaster that was season 3. For some it seems that even after season 3.5 and 4 people are still worried that Fedak in fact hates Sarah Walker now Bartowski. Hey I hate what he did to her in season 3.0 but I really don’t believe that he is simply that dumb, his chapter 7 statement now withstanding. My only real worry about season 5 would be a return of plywood which I want absolutely no part of.

      • Verkan_Vall says:

Sarah might not have told Bryce. Seems logical that she could not be a mother and be a spy. So she gave her baby to her mother on the conditions that she would never, ever come home again or tell ANYONE about the baby. Her handler is the only person who would have had to know, could have assigned Sarah deep cover for 8 or 9 or 12 months to fool the CIA and Bryce???????

I don’t know, seems to me those couple of sentences practically fit all the spoilers for season 5 and cover most of all the OOC / odd moments between Chuck and Sarah when talking about her past.

How about the truth comes out right at the end, terrified, emotionally wrecked Sarah thinks she will lose Chuck forever. With Judkins and LeFranc behind the wheel, the episode instead recreates the ballerina scene from the pilot in those last moments, and Chuck reacts the exact opposite of how Sarah thought he would. He embraces Sarah and her secret in the most dramatic and touching moment in the show’s history.

        Or, probably not, I am not a big fan of 1 + 1 = 2 anyhow????

While I agree Jason that I don’t believe it would need to be some big catastrophe if the kid were Sarah’s, I think it’s unlikely they will go that route. My money is still just on the child helping Sarah get over her fear of parenthood.

      • joe says:

I can’t see it either. There’s just no reason.
But Jason, you have to reexamine your logic just a bit. It is possible to be a mother and a spy in the Chuck universe. Her name is Mary Elizabeth.

      • armysfc says:

Jason, what you said makes complete sense in the chuck-verse. in fact it’s a trend that would just continue. casey left his pregnant fiancee, stephen and mary abandoned their kids as did sarahs dad, just not permanently. i also agree if it turns out that way it will be over quick, which would be a shame. i mean shouldn’t chuck worry from that point on that she would just leave him as well? i feel that won’t happen and your take is right.

      • mxpw says:

Jason – *scratches head* I’m confused by your statement. What are you saying 1+1=2 is?

I would lose all respect for Sarah as a character if she gave up her kid just so she could continue to be a spy. Especially since she would have reached an age where that kind of abdication of personal responsibility is just unacceptable.

This is why the idea that the child is Sarah’s is so unpalatable. I just don’t believe there is anyway that Sarah doesn’t come out looking like a bad person. And that’s why I continue to hold onto the idea that the kid isn’t Sarah’s.

Joe – That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement. Mary was a horrible mother. I would be deeply concerned for Chuck and Sarah’s future children if Mary Bartowski is Sarah’s role model for motherhood.

MX – the 1+1 statement was dual in nature, first I wanted to recognize Joe’s clever math play on words. Second, we have many clues that point to the baby being Sarah’s …. which often (but not always) in Chuck-verse means that is the last thing that will happen. Throw in there Sarah’s reaction in Season 4 to ‘maybe we are next’ early in the season, then to Chuck asking about her mother later in the season, and finally didn’t the prenup reason seem stupid? What if the nest egg socked away was for her daughter?????

MX – to be clear, I am hoping ‘in spades’ that Sarah does not have a secret child & firmly believe that to be about as stupid a story as TPTB have ever conceived, other than any story with the words ‘Shaw’ involved more than just in passing. I simply tossed it out there because that appears to be where we are being led.

Joe, funny, MX beat me to it, Mary (and your beloved Stephen) are in my estimation poster parents for ‘spies should not have children’ axiom. The notion that Ellie raised Chuck from his pre teen years on is down right sad, almost tragic. But, there is a real ‘If A Then B’ sense to this show’s treatment of parenthood vs spy life, and the answers to that parents, kids and spies situation as it relates to Chuck and Sarah is what I ‘wish’ the show ends with, the ultimate conclusion to their shared journey. I think it might!

Glad to hear you say all that, Jason. I thought you were a pod replacement there for a minute. 😉

I agree it would be a bad story to tell on countless levels. I really don’t think, to repeat Uplink, that Fedak is that dumb or devious, especially after promising a love letter to fans.

      • mxpw says:

Jason – Thank you for clarifying! I understand what you mean now. I agree with what you are saying (though I think this would be even stupider than anything related to Shaw, heh). I don’t think it even makes sense psychologically for Sarah to have a secret kid, and it would throw in too many monkey wrenches to the story of the last four years.

I also agree with you that very little of the family stuff on this show is much of an endorsement for being spies while trying to have a family. If it’s supposed to be, they’ve done a poor job of it. I personally don’t want Chuck and Sarah to have kids until they’ve quit being spies altogether because I really don’t think you can have your cake and eat it too, especially in the Chuckverse.

Oh, and I didn’t mean to imply that you were for the storyline or anything like that. My statement about Sarah giving up her kid to be a spy was just more of a general thing.

        Again, thanks for clarifying!

I did forget one element on my list: I want Chuck to sing to Sarah. I would love Chuck getting called out (Jeffster perhaps) and Morgan tells Sarah they used to call him “UpChuck” in HS because Chuck got nervous during a play and threw up. Chuck is the man and he sings…er…knocks it out of the park. Morgan makes a comment about how well he did, without the intersect, to which Sarah give a wink and says that there are a lot of things Chuck never needed the Intersect for. Cue #SexyTimes for Faith for the win!
