4.11 Chuck Versus The Balcony

Guest Stars:

• From Buddy TV (added 6 JAN 2011)

“One of the spoilers concerns Chuck‘s first episode after the break, on Jan. 17. It previously had been reported that the so-bad-they’re-awesome band known as Jeffster would return for an epic performance. We now know that the performance will occur on the Jan. 17 episode. Not only that, but the song selection will bring us a cover of Whitesnake’s power ballad, “Is This Love.”

Considering some of their past covers, there’s a decent chance that Lester and Jeff will put their own unique spin on the hit. We can only hope that they will honor the original spirit of over-dramatic poses and big hair, however they interpret the music.”

1. JB says:

My guess? It’s got somethign to do with how the bartowski’s celebrate the ‘anniversary’ of their mother’s ‘walk out.’

As an aside, I want Sarah to chase after chuck for once… although obviously I don’t want them to break up or anything considering the *difficulties* of trying our patience that occured in season 3.

Also, I want season 3 on dvd now.

2. Rick Holy says:

Howz about the “anniversary” of the original Intersect download and the beginning of all this mess we know and love as “CHUCK.”

3. atcdave says:

They will probably have a couple meanings to it, but the biggest one has to be Chuck and Sarah meeting.

4. crimefightsevilwithbatman says:

I doubt it will have anything to do with Chuck & Sarah’s anniversary (which, seems to be a common theory) simply because, well let’s face it, they like to screw with us. I think it will have something to do with Mama B. It’d be almost stupid of them not to after the way the finale ended. But, my official theory: it has something to do with Chuck & Ellie’s version of Mother’s Day and Mama B returning on the day of her departure. Just saying. If, on the off chance, there IS something relationship related & about an anniversary in that way, it will be Ellie & Awesome.

• joe says:

I tend to think so too, Crimefighter. The hint that Fedak gave about S4 being “all about family”, and the appearance of MEB at the end as a teaser reminded me right away of “Mother’s Day”, Bartowski style.

5. JC says:

Some “possible” pics of Zac shooting a scene for season 4. I thought filming started on the 19th myself. It might be a promo or something unrelated to Chuck.

6. OldDarth says:

“Just walked through the courtyard . and the Buy More. That’s right.” – tweet from chucktvdotnet

I love the BuyMore actors but the BuyMore aspect of the show needs to go. Depressing tweet.

• JC says:

Man I was really hoping the Buymore was gone.

• atcdave says:

I’m fine either way. Chuck himself has grown past it. But the Buy More is sort of a signature part of the show. With so many casual viewers I know, the Buy More is the first thing they talk about when they think Chuck. I don’t think its anyone’s “favorite” part of the show, but its always easy to share a laugh about it with friends or co-workers.

7. alladinsgenie4u says:

wow! I missed the spoiler mini fest.

Hmm. Cougars was an excellent episode and Heather vs Sarah fight was one of the highlights. So she is coming at a time when there are “bumps” in C/S “deepening” relationship. I bet she will be the one who manipulates Sarah and gets under her skin to try and broaden the rift. The major “bump” in C/S relationship that I can think of is – secrets and lies. Although I hate the idea of Chuck continuing to keep secrets from Sarah.

Stone Cold Austin returns in the same episode as Nicole does.IMO Hugo Panzer was kind of wasted in First Class. Hope this time he is back with a vengeance. Maybe he is one of the prisoners along with Heather who is stowed at Castle. Deadly duo bust out and epic fight ensues. Chuck vs Panzer Part 2 and Sarah vs Heather Part 2.

CRIMES FTW!!Morgan is looking like a new Casey in the making. Both are looking really bad a** in that picture. But let’s just hope it’s a tranq gun that Morgan is holding. I am guessing this is from the Season premiere – similar photos with Adam and Zach in suits were tweeted earlier.

8. jason says:

didn’t think anyone posted this, it is the season 4 poster, seems like alot of chuck and sarah which encourages me, but the proof will be in the execution of the season for me:

• atcdave says:

I like that poster a lot. Last season’s was an angry Chuck in full combat mode, with a little Sarah in the back ground; which did accurately sum up the season. This one looks like Chuck and Sarah together, front and center, that is the show I want to see.

• Crumby says:

What we all want to know now is: will the tiger be back?!

• OldDarth says:

I like the concept of that poster but Sarah does not look like Sarah to me.

9. JC says:

Fedak blurb from TV Guide’s Comic Con issue

After the seismic season 3 finale, cocreator Chris Fedak says Chuck will start “a new secret life all by himself as a rogue operative. The search for his mom and why she left all those years ago will become the mythic heart of the show.” Since the Buy More went bye bye “Chuck will rely on his experience in retail to create a new front. Part of the fun will be getting the Nerd Herd back together.” But don’t expect our boy to get good at that James Bond stuff. “He still has a lot of girly feelings” says Fedak. “He’ll still be the same old Chuck thrust into the dark and scary spy world.”

• herder says:

“..a new secret life all by himself” I think we can guess what the tension between Chuck and Sarah will be. “…relying on his experience in retail to create a new front..” sounds like he will open a new Buy More with himself as owner.

• atcdave says:

Dang, I seriously don’t like the sound of that.

• Hope says:

It won’t last long trust me. How could it? Chuck needs his family if he’s gonna win this fight, and as we’ve seen from season 3 the Bartowski clan works better together than apart.

10. Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

Twitter updates from Zach Levi and Olivia Munn

zach levi – So, I don’t wanna spoil anything, but @oliviamunn in a NerdHerder uniform is gonna be something you enjoy. A lot.

oliviamunn- @zacharylevi Being ur boss just feels right. Fun times at the Buy More! U and Josh (aka Josh whos NOT on Twitter Gomez) are dope. End quote.

Looks like she will be the Nerd Herd boss of the week with uniform to boot . Awesome. Me want to see a slightly jealous Sarah.

• herder says:

I’d almost rather see a clueless Morgan thinking that if Chuck can get his beautiful handler then my chances with Greta must be pretty good too. Then Greta shoots him down publicly and definitively.

• Crumby says:

Yeah I don’t see they’re gonna go for Jealous Sarah right away in the premiere. But would be funny to see it at some point.

Clueless Morgan could be hilarious.

I think “Greta” will play in the beginning of the bad but good but bad spy team Carmicheal-Cobra.

14. jason says:

don’t know how trustworthy this is, but here goes:

Who has a mini-Awesome bun in the oven? “We’re looking to expand our family,” Lancaster revealed backstage of Ellie and Awesome (Ryan McPartlin). “There might be a little bun in the oven, which will be good because it will raise the stakes.” Fedak confirmed the impending arrival of the baby who he said “will rule the world.”

Who will replace The Ring? “We have a new big bad this year,” Fedak said. “The big bad is a really important part of the story. Essentially we’re going after one person the entire season, which is a little different than what we’ve done in the past.”

• Casey's girl says:

I’ll wager that’s Mama B, who else are we searching for? Season four is basicly the search for mom. Can’t wait.

• joe says:

Holy cow!
This is just me speculating, but I see three great arcs developing now – Chuck & Sarah finding MEB, Ellie & Awesome becoming pregnant and Casey & Morgan & Alex.

Even I’m starting to get excited!

• jason says:

that would be great joe, I am afraid morgan is going to be attached to chuck’s hip this season, just like shaw was to sarah’s last season, morgan will be the co-star of the series, sarah and casey will be about as important as jeff and lester or ellie and awesome, the show will have 4 couples, with chuck and morgan the stars, if morgan is indeed paired with casey most of the time and sarah with chuck, life will be good, that is not what we are getting ‘sold’ right now, morgan sat next to chuck on the panel, morgan interviewed with chuck, schwartz commented about morgan and chuck as a spy team, matter of fact, other than sarah saying please more happy sarah time, she was largely ignored on the panel and in the spoilers to date, other than us being told she and chuck are a couple and the are going to fight alot

• atcdave says:

I wouldn’t worry too much about that Jason. Although it is true TPTB seem more enamoured of the whole Chuck/Morgan thing than most fans are (I’d much rather see Sarah totally take over the best friend role); I do think they get that Chuck and Sarah interaction will be a key to any success they have in S4. As for Yvonne being ignored, seriously I think she’s just fairly quiet. Every large cast interaction I’ve seen is dominated by Zach and Josh Gomez; they are loud and energetic and seem to be the social ring leaders of the whole cast. Leading into S3 we heard often how important the Chuck/Morgan relationship would be; and I guess it was important, but S3 was clearly about Chuck and Sarah even when they weren’t together. I expect more of the same for S4; even though I hope Morgan moves out of the apartment and he spends most of his screen time with Casey and Alex, I expect we’ll actually see a lot of Chuck/Morgan time. But I think we’ll see MORE Chuck and Sarah time. That will be the true test if they GET what they screwed up last season.

• jason says:

dave – I am pretty sure I got the morgan / chuck thing right, here are a few more fedak comments:

Much as I might want the show to become like 3.14 and 3.15, I think that will not be the case, I think the show will be more like a hybrid of 3.1 or 3.9, with casey and sarah being a team, chuck and sarah being a couple, and morgan in just about every scene, as he is going to be both chuck’s orion partner as well as in training in the cia.

• atcdave says:

I will admit Jason that article is pretty uninspiring. But it is also contrary to other things they have said about Chuck and Sarah being together on screen and on missions. Morgan and Ellie have always had key parts to play in Chuck’s life and I expect that to continue. Hopefully they do get that most of us want to see Chuck and Sarah working together; and they have also said Chuck, Sarah, and Casey are the ONLY characters who will be in every episode in S4. Remember they said very similar things a year ago about how important the “bromance” would be, and it was; it just wasn’t featured every week.

We’ll see what happens, but I seriously believe they understand Chuck and Sarah on screen together is key to the show’s success.

• Casey's girl says:

I’m willing to let things slide till it airs then I can judge better it’s no good to jump to conclusions so early before hand. And it’s better to not worry about it. The writer’s redeemed themselves with the Back Six of season 3 so I’ll put my faith in them to do this season justice. I can’t wait. 😀

• Crumby says:

I’m not worried about seeing Chuck and Sarah together, but I am a little worried about the lack of storyline for Sarah.

Basically so far, she’s the girlfriend, and that’s all. Everything they told us about her was related to their couple: they’re together, there will be bumps, Chuck’s search for mom will affect their couple…

I hope they just didn’t talk about it, because they wanted to emphasize on things that would “appease” the fans: CS together, lighter tone…

• herder says:

Jason, I see it as a sort of getting the band together thing. At the start of the season it is as they say in the GMMR article; Chuck out of the spy world, Sarah and Casey as a team, Morgan as a trainee and Chuck and Sarah as a couple.

Chuck starts to go after mom on his own, while helping Morgan with his training he gets Morgan to help him with his search. Then each week or so another character gets drawn in until we have the whole team Bartowski like in Subway/Ring part 2.
Morgan, Alex, Casey, Sarah, Awesome and then Ellie and the General. Hopefully there is a return of past good guys (Carina and Roan) as well as a return of past bad guys (Heather and Hugo).

Last year they broke up Chuck and Sarah this time they are breaking up team Bartowski. Lets hope they do the timing of the reconcilliation better this year. Think Blues Brothers “we’ve got to get the band back together” or any number of similar movies. Remember in these movies the reconcilliation is the first third of the movie which then moves on to the big plot (save Mama B).

• atcdave says:

Yeah Herder, that’s exactly what I hope to see.

• Kisku says:

Oh, i think you missed some details. Season 3 not only broke Chuck/Sarah, but also team B, how many episodes in a row we saw them barely working together, quite a lot.

What we are hearing now are teases that reveal nothing and are most likely true only to the first episode of the season. I can bet that the whole Chuck/Morgan partnership will end badly and Casey/Sarah will save their butt, so in process it’ll restore team B as a whole from episode 2 (Fedak said they love team B and want them back together asap).
Since we know that we’ll get some more story about Sarah past (Schwedak confirmed it) and Mama B is or was part of the CIA, who want to bet 100$ their stories are somewhat connected?

So we know no details about the plot and only some generalites, they say us nothing. Also i can bet that Casey/Alex/Morgan and Ellie/Devon stuff will be treated strictly as a story B/C material, save maybe one Casey centric episode.

• Crumby says:

Hope you’re right herder.

• herder says:

I think the big bad is the person that is forcing Mama B to hide. My guess is that the Harry Dean Stanton character is a minion of the big bad and team B will end out going after this big bad so as to be able to have Mama B come in from the dark.

• atcdave says:

I was thinking along the same lines herder. Except HDS might be the big baddie himself, or, as you said, just a key flunkie.

• Casey's girl says:

But didn’t TPTB say Mama B isn’t what we think? Like the question would be like ”Who is she, and what side is she on?” type?

15. alladinsgenie4u says:

A small spoiler from TV Guide – In response to a question asked by a fan about Chuck’s secret.

Chuck’s going to “come out” to more people, right? — Thoma
MICKEY: Possibly, but executive producer Chris Fedak warns that knowing Chuck’s secret identity is dangerous. “If they [learn Chuck’s secret], they’re probably not long for the world,” he tells us. Yikes!

• Hope says:

The clan’s going to find out, they’re a team but also a family and families stick together for better or for worse. Ryan Mcpartlin also said that having a baby added to the family would also raise the stakes. So when when the gang do find out, and they will, they’ll fight and we know they’re all born survivers so something’s gotta give. I’m excited. 😀

• Crumby says:

I don’t think they were talking about the search for mom but about Chuck being a spy.

Liked the way Yvonne said “Daniel SHAW”. Lol.

• ChuckNewbie8 says:

YS: “I think we learned our lesson about putting a third person in that (relationship).”

Ausiello: “They didn’t like it the fans were livid.”

RMcparlin: “Yeah I’m surprised we survived comic-con.”

CN8: ha!

• joe says:

Sounds like (the collective) they not only heard last year; they got the message loud and clear.

Well, at least that’s my interpretation.

17. JC says:

Stacey Keibler has been cast. On twitter she says her episode is with Stone Cold.

Looks like Chuck’s secret might only last two episodes.

• alladinsgenie4u says:

Also from that article is this – Keibler’s episode—which also features the return of Nicole Richie and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin—is slated to air in October.

@JC -You may be right about Chuck’s secret being outed to Sarah by 4×02 hence the bumps in their relationship coinciding with the Nicole Richie episode.

Let’s hope that even with the bumps we get an awesome dance scene between C/S, that is if TPTB hold true to their pattern of having a dance scene in the third episode of every season. What can I say – I have a hankering for a Chuck and Sarah dance now that they are together.

• alladinsgenie4u says:

They are really pulling out all stops in the guest list category. Let’s hope these guest stars draw in more viewers.

Speculation – Why is there a new CIA agent every week at the Buy More? Are they coming to train new recruits or they are just using the Buy More as their base of operations when they are on a mission in Burbank. Interesting to see how it plays out.

• Merve says:

Maybe the Greta position is cursed, like the Defence Against the Dark Arts professorship from Harry Potter.

Seriously, either it won’t be explained why each Greta only lasts a week, or each Greta will get so frustrated that he or she won’t be able to stand living more than a week in Burbank.

18. JC says:
Tiny Spoiler

I share with with a heavy sigh, Bruce: Sarah’s Orange Orange uniform appears to be a goner. “I don’t know if Sarah’s going to have a cover this season, now that everyone knows she is a spy now,” Yvonne Strahovski tells me. “There isn’t any need for it.”

19. OldDarth says:

Never make a Lou angry or you will be in for an incredible amount of hulking pain!

20. JC says:

More guest stars for Ep3

So whats the guest star count for that episode? Nicole Richie, Stone Cold, Stacey Keibler, Lou Ferrigno and Karolina Kurkova.

Seems like they went overboard.

• alladinsgenie4u says:

But TPTB said that they were looking for a model to play a super model in the second episode of the season. and there are already three guest stars in the 3rd episode – Nicole Richie, Stone Cold and Keibler. I highly doubt if there would be five guest stars in one episode.Seems too much to me. Maybe the cast of “Chuck” have the day off for the third episode. Or Ausiello has gotten it wrong and Lou Ferrigno and the model (ex-Victoria’s Secret Angel Karolina Kurkova)are in the second episode.

• JC says:

But aren’t they filming Ep2 now? If Ausiello got it wrong which is likely, I’d think these were either Ep 4 or 5.

• JC says:

Guess you were right Ausiello changed it to the second episode.

• alladinsgenie4u says:

Ausiello and his eagerness! Guess he is an avid Chuck fan, what with him rushing to tell everybody without confirmation. lol.

• Crumby says:

Are we sure that the Ritchie’s episode is episode 3? In the title of the article about Stacey Keibler it was said Greta 3.0 but it was also said airing in October. Couldn’t the 3rd Greta be in the 4th episode or something?

I hope not if the Ritchie’s episode is where Chuck tells Sarah about mom, the sooner the better…

21. joe says:

It’s getting hard to keep up with the news! You all are great reporters.

If you haven’t seen it (yet) the news from is that the Orange-Orange is no more. Sad. Yvonne looked so good in that color!

22. JC says:

Spoilers ahoy
More guest stars
Armand Assante and Bronson Pinchot

• joe says:

Awww – you beat me, JC! Thanks.

• alladinsgenie4u says:

@J.C and Joe – Thanks a lot.

Aha! Nice bit of news. So the second episode will feature a fashion week. Hopefully Sarah is going to walk the ramp as an undercover model.Bronson Pinochet plays “wannabe matchmaker”. I bet he tries to set up Chuck with some model who turns out to be Sarah in disguise

And the return of the General in 4×04 and an invitation to his island. Awesome. Romantic getaway for our favorite couples? which will surely be ruined by the mission.

• Merve says:

Maybe we’ll finally find out why the Ring cared so much about Costa Gravas. (Actually, we probably won’t, since the Ring is no more.)

I’m kind of worried about how the island nation is going to look onscreen, but since they did such a good job of recreating Europe in “Honeymooners,” they should be able to do an equally good job of creating a tropical paradise via green screen. (Seriously, TPTB of White Collar could learn a thing or two about green screening from Chuck.)

• JC says:

Or he has information about MEB. It’d be interesting if Casey worked with her during his Angel of Death days.

Or he just wants another crack at Ellie.

• alladinsgenie4u says:

I am wondering how a mission involving a Fashion Week in Milan/And a holiday on the General’s island fits in with Chuck’s search for Mama B. Or is Team Bartowski back together by 4×02. I seem to recall the spoilers for 4×01 saying that Harry Dean would be the person who comes between Chuck and his search for Mama B. Maybe Chuck gets warned off not to look for her failing which the consequences would be the death of the people who are close to Chuck. So he puts off his search for the time being. But does he rejoin CIA?

Speculation is fun. And September couldn’t come any slower

• patty says:

I really think that the only reason they had Chuck leave the CIA was so that he would not be duty bound to report the Orion intel cache.

Just like the reason Casey was out of the NSA was so he could help Chuck cheat on his red test.

• joe says:

Patty, I think that the time-line is a bit different, though. IIRC, Chuck gets the robo-call from Stephen after he’s already announced to Ellie at dinner that he’s already informed the General. It’s a done deal by the time he answers the phone, presumably before he learns about the Orion Cave.

• atcdave says:

I get it, your talking from a meta-story perspective, not Chuck’s perspective? You could be right Patty. It will be interesting to see if Chuck actually rejoins the CIA at some point or if he becomes some sort of private contractor.

• joe says:

Oh! Sorry, Patty (and thanks, Dave). Now I see what you mean.

You’re right. From the perspective of the story-line, it does make sense.

23. joe says:

News from TV Guide! Armand Assante is back in episode 4 as Goya, our favorite S. Am. dictator.

And Bronson Pinchot (Risky Business, The First Wives Club and about a zillion TV shows) has been cast in episode 2.

• amyabn says:

I guess my question is if they are doing a fashion show, will Carina make another appearance? Mini Anden is a real life model/actress. She needs to come back again this season, even if it isn’t for fashion week! She always stirs the pot!

• ChuckNewbie8 says:

Except this time she’s going to make the Alex-Morgan-Carina love triangle sizzle lol.

• jason says:

faith, amy, as long as you two are commenting here, a related ? – if the first 13 episodes, how often will we see ‘crazy in love jealous’ sarah rear back ready to kill chuck and or some comely brunette (or blond for that matter?)

• ChuckNewbie8 says:

How likely? I think there’s at least a 70% chance sometime in episode 5-7 that’ll happen. It’s happened all 3 years (grr).

But that said, they said they learned their lesson so hopefully it’ll be jealous Sarah (but in a fun way) and not a PLI frustration event.

Actually I would really like for a blond look-a-like (twin!) of Sarah to come on the show and throw some controversy in there. Nothing that goes anywhere, purely entertainment. I am of course imagining 2 Yvonne Strahovskis (because she’s playing 2 parts). Whether that character has to be seduced or that character falls for Chuck or whatnot it doesn’t matter. But in the end it’ll go nowhere (not even Cole close *shudders*) but still be entertaining. I do love a jealous Sarah…it brings out the tigerrrr–rawr (haha) in her.

How often? No more than once IMO. There has to be some conflict but not in the same fashion as previous seasons.

• jason says:

i was thinking total comedy – a misunderstanding lasting 10-20 seconds tops, for some reason, I think angry sarah is a blast on this show, like when she smacked fitzwald and even shaw

• ChuckNewbie8 says:

That would work too. I really enjoyed her antics in Role Models (the whole gun thing).

• amyabn says:

It would have to be a brunette, ’cause it’s always a brunette! With licorice hair. LOL!

it could be more frustration on her part if Chuck gets hit on by one of the Greta’s. Remember how flustered Chuck got when Lou showed up and Sarah had to introduce herself while Chuck was tripping all over himself. Or Chuck has to go on a mission and a date with some baddie chick and Sarah ends up getting to kick her ass. No one gets “her” Chuck. I’m with CN8 and want it funny, not drama.

• atcdave says:

I’ll agree with the ladies. It would be so much fun see jealous Sarah, briefly. Of course we really need Chuck to be completely inocent this time; but Sarah still ought to get to kick someone’s butt!

• joe says:

I want to see Sarah monitoring the licorice-haired brunette from Castle and say “This is not happening on *my* watch!”

Better yet, I want to hear *Casey* say that! 🙂

• Ernie Davis says:

I dunno ladies, a certain petite redhead is now a member of the cast as opposed to a guest star…

• ChuckNewbie8 says:

well that doesn’t count. Gen Beckman should really have her own stable of studs what with the men coming out of the woodwork pining for her. Remember that guy in Tooth? lol.

• Ernie Davis says:

Come on Faith, like Chuck’s brunettes you know they mean nothing. You only see the wrinkle twinkle in her eye eyes when it’s Chuck.

• Crumby says:

And now that she’s no longer his boss… go Duck!

24. jason says:

I have watched 3-4 episodes of commando cody this summer, it is free on the sci fi channel, reminds me of tom paris on star trek doing captain proton, I would love to see morgan and chuck take tom and harry’s role in duncan mcneil’s captain proton in a dream episode, with sarah taking captain jadeway’s role (relecutantly just like jadeway) – heck, if played for laughs shaw could even come back and be the bad guy – boy I bet merve and old darth (and probably everyone else too) are glad I am not a show runner, sorry for going off topic

25. alladinsgenie4u says:

Spoiler Alert! The title for 4×04 is
Chuck – Episode 4.04 – Chuck versus The Coup D’Etat

Maybe the gang’s vacation dovetails right in with some one planning to overthrow Goya. This looks like it will be a really cool episode.

• JC says:

So no title for 4.03 yet? Interesting, maybe its Chuck vs The Fake Name Pt2 😉

• alladinsgenie4u says:

🙂 at the suggested title.

Or it could be
Chuck vs Jenny Burton (Sarah’s back story)
Chuck vs the Schoolmate (Heather Chandler)
Chuck vs Prison Break (prison transfer)

• JC says:

I’m guessing since it hasn’t leaked the title is a pretty big spoiler. But I do like your idea of Chuck vs Jenny Burton.

• joe says:

Yeah, that’s gotta be about Goya, Genie. Thanks for the tip! I totally missed that one yesterday.

26. alladinsgenie4u says:

Here’s some info about a trailer provided by a new member(CS4EVA) at the NBC boards. I am just copy/pasting the important parts of the post.

Hey Chuck fans,
This is my very first post on this forum (or any forum like this I guess) and I’ve been a long time Chuck fan, but I just wanted to make you all aware in case someone hadn’t already, that 2 new scenes of Chuck from Season 4 were shown during the NBC Primetime Preview Special that aired here in Chicago from 12:30-1p local time.

In the first scene, as some have predicted he might, Chuck swoops in and saves Sarah/Casey who are tied back to back in chairs by karate chopping a bad guy that is holding them.

Chuck, karate chops him, he falls, and Chuck then is in anguish holding his hand saying “I’m really not in spy shape.” Sarah/Casey give him kind of a pathetic look.

In the second scene, we get our first glimpse of Linda Hamilton as Mama B, with a straight on shot of the same pose we see her in when her back is to the camera in the season finale as she’s taking the phone call.

I do know that the special is due to air at least here in Chicago, again next Sunday at noon.

27. OldDarth says:

Chuck writing staff via Gray Jones –

Only 2 seasoned Chuck writers – excluding Fedak and Schwartz. Even mix of comedy and drama writers.

I like the sensibilities of the comedy writing credit backgrounds. Ugly Betty, The 70s Show, and The Reaper.

The results should be interesting.

• JC says:

Loved Reaper so that’s good. What I find interesting is that one of writers Nicholas Wootton was involved in Prison Break. That might give us a clue on the type of spy story we might see.

• joe says:

Very interesting news! I agree about that experience mix – That 70s Show was one of my favorites for quite a while, and Newman was part of How I Met Your Mother (which is universally HIMYM 🙂 )

The sad news is that Borow and Denby are gone. Change is inevitable, but – sheesh.

• atcdave says:

I’m excited for the new blood; I hope for a more developed spy story this season.

28. OldDarth says:

Life as a bubble show is always tumultuous.

Joe – sheesh? First time I have seen a slight crack in your normally ubiquitous upbeat outlook. 😉

• joe says:

Well, only a slight crack! I don’t think either Zev Borow or Max Denby have been given enough credit. Gray’s interview with Zev two years ago was one that really stuck out in my mind. It was a great one!

The fact is that Judkin and LaFranc have written outstanding episodes this season, and the the four new writers have a great track record. Someone (I assume it’s Josh Schwartz) really knows how to pick ’em – he’s proven it.

I’m going to feel like there will be episodes by Borow, Denby and Scott Rosenbaum, Ali Adler, Matt Miller, and Phil Klemmer as well that will never be created now, and that thought is a downer. But I’m confident the new comers will be great.

• Faith says:

Check out the budget snippet. We were just talking about that.

Doesn’t explicitly say whether the bulk of it is coming from Subway like I figured but just the very number down from S2 speaks volumes to me.

• Ernie Davis says:

Hmmm, so a 500K shortfall from S2 to S3. Think of it this way. 500K x 13 episodes = 6.5 million / say 1 million hard core Chuck fans (the viewership never dipped below 5 million so we’ll go with 20% as extremely dedicated) so for $6.50 each from 20% of the viewers we get the budget back. I’m good for $20. Where do I send my check?

• JC says:

I’ll throw in a hundred if we get that kissing booth.

• joe says:

50 Quatludes!

• amyabn says:

A million Costa Gravan pesos from me! I’ll go so far as two million if you guarantee Zach in the kissing booth! 😉

29. Merve says:

Dionne in W. Va.: Chuck! Chuck! Chuck!
Don’t you worry your pretty little heads about any continuity issues on Chuck because Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak have assured us that the barely introduced Governor from last season will be seen again in the new year. “The governor is still a part of the show,” says Chris. “We want to do big, exciting stories. So right now, going into season four, it’s really about the search for mom.” So the governator will be a side story…but still a priority. More importantly though (this is what they call burying the lead, my friends), I am heading to the set of Chuck tomorrow, so please tweet any questions to @kristindsantos or email them to Or send a carrier pigeon. Whatev.

30. alladinsgenie4u says:

A very short promo for Season 4 – a lot of scenes from Season 3 interspersed with two very short scenes from Season 4 – Enjoy!

• Casey's girl says:

Great stuff it’s going to be awesome. Is it me? or is Zach getting a few gray hairs? Might be the lighting…Hmm.

31. Merve says:

If on ‘Chuck’ the Buy More is now being run by the CIA, what does that mean for Big Mike and the Nerd Herders? Are they off the show? – Stu
Big Mike is still on hand – though oblivious to his new bosses, Mark Christopher Lawrence tells me. Lester and Jeff, meanwhile, are “on the lam, getting a taste of freedom… and fear,” says Vik Sahay. “Who knows what that kind of new feral quality that will bring if and when we reunite with the gang?” So, Jeffster’s on some sort of “excellent adventure”? “I don’t know about excellent,” Vik laughs. “More like torturous, weird, awkward and off-putting.”

• Casey's girl says:

LOL oh man, that ought to be hilarious. I honestly can’t wait and season 4 is sounding better all the time.

32. Crumby says:

Dianne’s gonna show a little leg to try and compete with the leggy Valkyrie…

• alladinsgenie4u says:

I want to hear Morgan say to Chuck “Dude ! You were so right. She IS tiny” And a more hilarious scene – Beckman being introduced to Big Mike as the new owner of the store. Just imagining the two of hem standing together has got me smiling.

• Ernie Davis says:

Dianne’s relocating to Burbank to fight for her man. That’s my theory, and I’m sticking to it. He proved his devotion by saving her. The whole quitting thing, momentary setback. Now any hint of inappropriate superior/employee relationships is gone. Dianne is there to get her Chuck, and no love bunker is needed. Forget Sarah vs. Ellie, Dianne vs. Ellie will be epic.

• amyabn says:

Maybe Diane will be in an Orange Orange outfit, or a be a green shirt at the Buy More. The BM green would be much more flattering to her coloring :-). Make her the new assistant manager so Morgan, Chuck, and Casey can be free to go out on missions and Big Mike would be none the wiser.

• Crumby says:

And no Greta in Coup d’État which makes sense. By the way any idea on what Greta stands for?

I have no idea what Cubic Z means… anyone?

• jason says:

Coup d’Etat is the sudden unconstitutional deposition of a government

cubic Z = Cubic zirconia – maybe an engagement ring?????? There is a kristen spec posted on chuck tv that one of I think the number is down to 7 couples is going to get married quickly, in a surprise move, CS are one of the couples.

• jason says:

where is that edit button, the cubic z is a guess, not a spoiler, certainly as is the potential engagement / wedding

• Crumby says:

Thanks jason.

I wasn’t referring to Coup d’État in my first sentence (because they’re French words so this one easy for me) but the acronym GRETA.

As for Cubic Z, Google gave me the same answer than you jason –> Cubic Zirconia. I don’t know how I’d feel about CS getting engaged that soon.

• joe says:

Cubic Zirconia also has the connotation of being a fake – it’s easily confused with a real diamond. That’s certainly part of what they’re telling us in the title.

• JC says:

My guess, Chuck needs the ring for some mission as Orion. At this point Sarah still doesn’t know and finds the ring. Cue a Sarah freak out.

• Merve says:

I wonder why they’re referring to the titular item as a “Cubic Z” instead of as a “Cubic Zirconia.” That suggests to me that “Cubic Z” is something that one of the characters says, perhaps casually tossed off in conversation as something related to the mission, like the “Nacho Sampler.” Hopefully, “Cubic Z” doesn’t get said too often. My ears might bleed from hearing “Zee” so much. (Seriously, it’s “Zed,” folks. Yeesh. ;))

Either that, or “Cubic Z” references a three-dimensional letter “Z,” which would be a really funny fake-out.

• alladinsgenie4u says:

@JC – It would be great if such a scenario happens. Chuck’s using the CZ because it’s an Orion gadget in disguise- Sarah sees it and a knee jerk reaction follows. Hence the bumps. What say?

Or it could be ring belonging to Mama B that Chuck found in Orion’s Cave.

• atcdave says:

Cubic Z definitely suggests a fake to me. I’ve been firmly informed by women that a real diamond, no matter how small, is manditory for a real engagement.

Sorry Merve, its an US show, so you’re stuck with American English. Shouldn’t you Canadians be talking like the rest of the continent anyway? Do your cars have “boots?” Do you change floors in a “lift?” Just how English are you guys??!!

• Merve says:

Nope, “trunk” and “elevator” here.

• joe says:

Wow, you guys are quick!

• joe says:

Okay! In conjunction with the CZ spoiler, Kirsten at E! has put up a major tease and potential mega-spoiler that fits right in.

But I caution you to remain calm and cautious on this one. She’s already eliminated 3 of the shows, Chuck remains, but doesn’t completely fit for my money.

• JC says:

She says to hit the comments section STAT which I’m guessing is a hint that it’s either Grey’s or House.

33. Crumby says:

36. alladinsgenie4u says:

Spoiler Alert!

Neil in Boise, Idaho: Didn’t you hit the Chuck set? How was it? Magical, as always! Yvonne Strahovski was shooting a fight scene on a catwalk with supermodel Karolina Kurkova, and it’s definitely going to rank up there as one of the best girlfights evah on Chuck. Yvonne also answered one of your fan questions–Whether Brandon Routh/Daniel Shaw will return–in a way I think will make you happy! “Oh man, another rise from the dead!” Yvonne says with a laugh. “I don’t know how the fans would like that one. I think we have to leave the love triangles alone this time around because I think the fans just want to see Chuck and Sarah together for a little while before we bring in an evil love interest.” Yvonne says of Chuck and Sarah: “They’re together now. It gets very couple-y. We’re sort of finding our couple feet and the story is going to take us into finding Chuck’s mother.” Bryden in Maine: Any news on this season of Chuck? One more tidbit: Armand Assante will be back on Chuck this season as Alejandro Goya, the king premier of Costa-Gravas, but this time he’s bringing his woman with him! Yep, look for Mrs. Goya to appear in episode four; producers are hoping to find a major name to play the part. (Any chance they could get Salma Hayek for the gig?)

• joe says:

Selma Hayek?

Oh boy – I’m going into sensory overload just thinking about it.

T-t-too m-m-many bbbbbbeauttttiful women! Norman, coordinate!

• Big Kev says:

I’m doing my happy dance….probably not a good move in an open plan office.
No more Shaw. That’s enough for me. That’s really all I wanted confirmed about Season 4. Because, when it comes down to it, for me anyway, the misconceived and poorly acted Shaw character was at the heart of everything I didn’t like about Season 3 – and the question of whether he was going to come back was the cloud stopping me from getting really excited about Season 4.
Even though he was at the heart of one of the very best (if not the best) episodes of the series in Subway, I just want him off my screen.
Now that he is – bring on Season 4!!

• jason says:

don’t like the ‘this time round’ or ‘for a little while’ at all, I thought at comic con schwartz I think said ‘this season’ when talking about the subject, of course he isn’t going to say forever, but he / she could have said nothing about for how long when describing chuck and sarah. Oh well. I did like the ‘us’ in finding chuck’s mom, maybe Morgan won’t be in every scene this season afterall.

Morgan and chuck is the worst ‘coupling’ of any pair of the big 6 characters, casey and morgan was a riot at first, but got overwritten. Even great pairings that I would love to see – ellie / sarah or morgan / sarah – would get old if there were too many of them, although I’d like to see what my actual ellie – sarah scene fast Forward worthy threshhold would be (chuck/morgan and casey/morgan are already past it) – LOL

• atcdave says:

I wouldn’t make a big thing about Yvonne hedging a little Jason. First of all she probably doesn’t really know what is planned for the future; secondly she doesn’t what to say exactly even what she does know!

• JC says:

So what our the odds Goya’s wife will be behind the coup? Also it’d be great to see her try and make a play for Awesome since Goya has a thing for Ellie.

And my love for Yvonne grows with her “Another rise from the dead” comment. Even she knows its stupid at this point.

• alladinsgenie4u says:

I say, she knew (and others too) that it was stupid even back in Season 3 when they decided to bring back Shaw from the “dead”.

Anyways, I am loving the “gets very couple-y” part. And also that she will be involved in the search for Mama B.

Goya’s wife hitting on Awesome. Now that would be so full of win comedy. I hope it comes down to that

• Merve says:

Yvonne’s answer is really silly. Shaw isn’t dead, and since he tried to kill everybody, he can’t be a love interest.

• atcdave says:

I think “rise from the dead” was reference his career. Sorry, rude joke.

I think she gets that his return would not be well received.

• herder says:

I think that they get a sort of party line, this year it is that the fans don’t like people between Chuck and Sarah. Last year remember some of the quotes:
-“triangles are the thing the fans love to hate” Zach Levi
-“WTWT isn’t random” Ali Adler
-“They’re not going to jump a shark, even a superman shark” Adam Baldwin
-“something emotional and traumatic is going to happen between Chuck and Sarah…but it’s going to be great” Josh Schwartz
-“we love Chuck and Sarah together” Ali Adler

The point being that any statement by an actor or producer of a show must be taken with a certain amount of skepticism. After all their job is to sell the show.

• atcdave says:

And Herder, its always a lot of fun to see how wrong they all were a year ago! (especially Adam Baldwin, you have to wonder if he didn’t know or didn’t get it.)

• Merve says:

@herder: I understand the need for a unified message, but there’s a limit to how inane the comments can get before they become annoying. Instead of telling me what isn’t going to happen next season, why don’t they tell me what is going to happen or just keep quiet about it?

• Merve says:

Sorry, in case I wasn’t clear, I was talking about the comments made by the people who work on the show, not comments on this blog.

• atcdave says:

Its Okay Merve, I can be inane with the best of them!

• jason says:

merve – with each bit of passing good news about season 4 that seems to dis season 3 and or daniel shaw, you are seemingly becoming more and more annoyed – I on the other hand am near giddy – unfortunately, I think you will feel revenge at some point, I think the series finale, 4.12 and 4.13 will have shaw back, and he will ruin the episodes for me, I’ll take my happy time now, yours is probably coming – why do you love daniel shaw so much?

• atcdave says:

Jason, I would almost bet money they don’t revisit Shaw this season. He was received so poorly, it almost doesn’t matter that he was pretty good as a pure villain.

If we get an S5, and Chuck and Sarah are married, I could see bringing him back. Otherwise fans will get very testy.

• Merve says:

@jason: Hey, I’m happy about the Mrs. Goya spoiler. And this isn’t about loving Shaw; he was a pretty stupid character. I don’t care if he comes back or not. (I actually didn’t think that he made a great villain; he was better when he was just psycho.) It irks me that Dos Santos is trying to pass this off as excellent news when it’s not even news at all. It also irks me that yet again, people at the show are trying to speak for “the fans.” People should speak for themselves (even if they agree with me). 😉

• JC says:

I get what you’re saying Merve. But people like Dos Santos and Ausiello are just gossip mongers not real journalists or critics. They want access so they toss softball questions and take any tidbit like a starving dog. Compare them to Mo Ryan who TPTB and cast seem to be avoiding like the plague.

• Jan says:

Mo Ryan is changing jobs…moving to aoltv, whatever that is. So, not sure her focus has been on Chuck…yet.
I think we must also take into account that TPTB don’t want to reveal too much before the first episode airs. Granted, with NBC promotion having forgot how to spell CHUCK, let alone having remembered to promote it, any publicity is better than NBC publicity. Still, even the soft entertainment editors serve their purpose

• Merve says:

@JC: I can see why they’d want to avoid Mo Ryan. Seriously, the last interview that Fedak did with her was a pile of garbage. Fedak needs to get better at dodging questions. And Ryan needs to get better at not asking the same question five times. That being said, I respect Ryan for wanting to ask difficult questions, and I respect Fedak for not giving in to Ryan’s BS.

• JC says:

See I have no problem with Mo’s interview she asked questions that others like Sepinwall didn’t. Up until then most of interviews had allowed Fedak to get away with shifting the blame on a segment of fans. Or his standard another universe comment.

She tried to push and not let him get away those answers. Obviously didn’t work obviously but I’d rather her try. I really think she caught him off guard, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they didn’t want to do any interviews with her.

• atcdave says:

I agree JC; I felt like she was being my advocate there. The fact she had to push so hard reflected more on Fedak’s inability to “get it” than it did on her.

But in the end, it does probably mean she’s done with any special access on “Chuck.”

• JC says:

Man we need the ability to edit our comments or I need to proof read more before I post. Or I really like the word obviously.

• Merve says:

See, I didn’t like that interview because I felt as if she was asking leading questions in order to get Fedak to say that he agreed with her assessments. If she just wanted Fedak to say what she wanted to hear, why bother interviewing him? That’s not good journalism, and it really reflects poorly on her.

• jason says:

merve I thought she had the best interview in chuck fandom history – she was hoping mad about season 3’s misery and in particular how poorly it reflected on sarah – I wish mo would have kicked fedak in the you know what’s for all the fans her point of view represented

• Crumby says:

I didn’t feel like she was asking the same question over and over. I felt more like Fedak answer was the same: “we designed the season, there was a plan, and we’re pretty happy about it”.

• joe says:

@JC on editing: I firmly agree with you. The admins (the four of us with our names up top) can edit our posts, but WordPress doesn’t make that facility generally available. I wish they did. It really helps with the embarrassing typos thing (but even moreso with clarity).

But being the one who habitually types “hear” for “here” and “Chuck” for “check” and types dozens of other writing misdemeanors, I hold no one to account for that!

• Merve says:

Jason: That’s my problem with it. Nobody asked her to speak on behalf of the disgruntled fans, and she’s deluding herself if she thinks that she’s representing the Chuck fanbase. Honestly, that interview came across as nothing more than a disingenuous publicity stunt.

• atcdave says:

Well Merve, she represented Jason and I pretty well. I think its clear to everyone involved that not everyone wants the same thing. But with a huge loss in viewership over the course of the season, and a large number of us saying we’re unhappy about the same thing (more or less), I think she did a great job of channeling fan anger (again, mine and Jason’s anyway).

You do have to remember she made comments after Comic-Con 2009 that were consistant with what myself and many other viewers have said for the entire interval from then until the end of the reset/triangles arc. So when all is said and done I’m happy someone got to get in their faces and say “I told you so.” (OK, that’s not quite what she said, but at least she made them squirm about it!)

37. Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

OK I’ve been saving this one for a while but Dave’s post above gave me an opening.

To me saying Shaw was an OK villain is like having to choose the best piece of burnt toast, it still doesn’t taste very good.

Shaw was yes, a better villain, because he wasn’t a better anything else. But Shaw a as a villain never made me think he would do harm to anyone, unlike Justin or Mauser for example. His presence is totally predictable storywise – show up, cause grief for the hero, get defeated. I know the same could be said for most villains or evil-doers, it’s just that I don’t “hate” Shaw as a villain. Justin was easy to “hate”, and I like that in my villain.

I also agree with Dave, the quickest way to kill any momentum S4 is building is to mention “Shaw” and “S4” in the same sentence.

I know some people say that Chuck needs a villain with “history”, if that is the case, I would prefer that Beckman become the villain this season. Really it would be kinda cool if you think about it.

• Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

Again with the replying in the wrong spot. Apologies.

• atcdave says:

I think we just proved our point Joseph. Shaw just inspires so many bad feelings among us fans it would be foolish to go there again. That doesn’t prove they won’t do it; after all they did some pretty foolish things they should have known better than to mess with last year. But last year they were proudly bragging about the stupid things they were about to do; this year we’re actually hearing some smarter talk from everyone involved.

• JC says:

I’ve said before a great villain should be hated for what they do on screen not because people were sick of seeing the character. Maybe if they hadn’t made Shaw look like a bumbling idiot he would come off threatening but they did. It’s not like turning evil caused his brain to actually function.

• thinkling says:

Trouble is Shaw was perceived as a villain as the the interloping love interest … that’s when I hated him. When he became a villain I couldn’t hate him as much as I did before. So, dead or not, we can all hope he’s gone. And it sounds like he is.

As to a villain with history, I’d rather have a new villain, preferably one who’s never heard of the Ring or Fulcrum.

38. Gringo Chuck Fan says:

Hola Amigos – long time away… but I often stop by to read up on where we think all this is going.
If anything – I think this carnival ride is about to start spinning faster!
Huge list of guest stars…
Lots of different set/story locations too.
[ Hey did you catch Zac’s live video from the set last week? Machine Gun Girls!!! waaahooo]

I think that some fans are worried about the writers who have departed… but if we were going to get very very critical – we’d admit to ourselves that parts of S3 were pretty sloppy.
I just hope they tighten the stories and try to control the pace of the jumps from one week to the next…

Anyways – IMDB – has some interesting tidbits – that aren’t really spoilers – but we can read into them alittle I suppose.
There is already [ 4.01] a Stunt double for M-E-B…
So we gotta know that Mama B is gonna be feisty!
Also – they have somebody credited as a photo double for Papa B… so its either a keepsake photo someplace – or we have some flashback sequences.
Either way – I really enjoy it when they take time to fill in some of the history of the characters – always makes the story seem fuller.
So – with the first 4 ep’s well underway
[ EP 4.01 should be completely finalized by now]
I’m really torn.
I wish summer could go on and on forever…
[ such is the life of a teacher]- yet on the otherhand – Sept. 20 can’t come fast enough!!!
Cheers – have a good one!

39. JC says:

If I’m not mistaken today is the last day of filming 4.03. We haven’t heard any news about who will play Goya’s wife yet. Odds on that being Ausiello’s scoop for Chuck this week.

• jason says:

as long as it isn’t brandon routh life will be good – although if routh is married to Goya, then maybe sarah did not get all that intimate with the worst recurring cast member in tv history, plus I am sort of glad the season 3 writing staff is gone too, no more misery arcs, man season 3.1 thru 3.12 was lousy

• Ernie Davis says:

Hey, it could have been worse. They could have cast Ted McGinley as Shaw.

• jason says:

TM would have made a great Shaw, because he knows what he is as an actor (not much of one), it would have been hilarious, what ended up with routh was perverted,

To name a few: the stalking his younger subordinate, giving out assignments so he could get her alone, cheesy come ons, would have all been a stitch with TM, with BR it wasn’t, plus poor BR was written so pathetic, pulling morgan in front of the stun gun, wanting to blow chuck up after claiming he never lost a man, letting casey get fired without fighting for him, burning manoosh, trying to burn morgan, the whole chuck red test fiasco, repeatedly punching defenseless chuck on the ground while sarah watched, sucker punching rafe while sarah watched, and even dimwittedly telling chuck his guilt in front of the camera, that is just off the top of my head

I would have to think the writers did not like the story line and fought back by making shaw one of the least noble, unheroic, downright pathetic characters in our lifetime?

• Crumby says:

Shaw wasn’t there when Casey got fired or when Chuck burned Manoosh.

• herder says:

I think that this is Brandon Routh’s real worry, that he is poised to become the new Ted McGinley, the only actor to be identified as a cause of several shows (Happy Days, Married with Children and the Love Boat) to jump the shark.

• jason says:

but he was the leader, leaders are responsible for what goes on with the team – period – trust me – I know this first hand – even if you aren’t the guy doing the firing – you are accountable

sorry for the rants – my gut tells me he will be back, too many fanboys and girls blogging about him, his return, his remarkable portrayal of a villain, etc – I want to be clearly heard, even if a lone voice, he was not appreciated in any way shape or form by some segment of the fan base.

• Crumby says:

In Nacho Sampler and Tic Tac, Beckman was the one in charge. Shaw wasn’t there. We can’t blame Shaw for everything.

• jason says:

if you are the manager of team b, you are, even if you are away on a business trip, beckman is the general, shaw’s boss, shaw everyone else’s, but yea – I see your point, you have to see mine however, it is how all military and all busniness works, you are not fired for being out of town a day

• Crumby says:

Well first I don’t see burning Manoosh as a mistake. Even if it was, Shaw was undercover. He wasn’t aware of what was happening. I really don’t see how you can blame him for it.

About Casey, I would agree that he didn’t do anything to help him afterwards.

• atcdave says:

Jason, man, let it go! you know I didn’t care for what they did with Shaw or the season either; but he is GONE. If we ever see him again he will be a pure villain, and I’m certain it won’t be this season.

I do suspect some aspects of the S3 writing may represent a writing staff that didn’t like the marching orders they were getting. How fast several of them jumped ship after the season makes me think that even more. But we are unlikely to ever know for sure.

• Crumby says:

JC how do you calculate this? How many days of shooting is one episode?

• herder says:

I thought that they went from 8 days per episode to 7 as one of the cost cutting measures for season 3. I would presume that they are sticking with 7 days for season 4 too.

• Crumby says:

Thanks for the answer herder. I thought it was 7 days as well, but then I don’t know how to count this.

• Kisku says:

Well, i have been observing via twitter and other means how long they have been filming certain episodes and at least with episode 1 and 3, there were 9 shooting days. I also noticed there were some overlap between episode 1, 2 and 3 in terms, that they were shooting both episodes at the same time, with different crew i assume…like for example Devon/Ellie scenes for episode 1 and Chuck/Sarah for episode 2 etc.

There can be few reasons why those episodes had longer shooting days with tons of quest stars. One is maybe that WB actually increased Chuck budget back, but the reason also might be that they are just spending more money on those first few episodes, which allows them to have a bit more loose schedule and they will be saving money later on with some “bottle” episodes.

• atcdave says:

Is it possible too that the longer shooting schedule simply represents a looser schedule? You know like quitting time at 6, Saturdays off, and no overtime.

• Ernie Davis says:

I also wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve decided getting too far ahead in production might not be a good thing.

• Crumby says:

I don’t know about that Dave. Have you seen the last live videos from the set that Zac made? The last one was at like 2 in the morning or something, they were still shooting and Yvonne was getting make up so they weren’t done.

• Crumby says:

But I guess they don’t have to shoot 5 days a week… I remember that Yvonne said “I didn’t work today” on the last Ausiello video.

• joe says:

Interesting thought, Ernie, ‘specially in light of the discussion we had about it being to late to change things once they realized what the fan reax was going to be to the PLIs.

Timing, as they say, is everything.

40. Kisku says:

They only shoot on weekdays, not on weekends. Also not every actor work every day, so they don’t ve to be on set during every day of production. Since they shoot by location, so completly out of order, they may shoot scene 2 and 40 on the same day, just because it was on the same set. So when Yvonne was saying she wasn’t working, it most likely meant they were shooting scenes for example in BuyMore with Morgan, where her presence wasn’t needed.

I remember reading this shooting schedule for Honeymooners episode and there, during one day, they shoot all scenes with Ellie, Devon, Jeffster + the conversation of Chuck/Ellie and the final “Feeling Good” scene and those scenes were throughout the episode.

41. alladinsgenie4u says:

Small Spoiler from Ausiello

Question: I need some Chuck scoop! —Taylor
Ausiello: Captain Awesome won’t be reviving his short-lived career as international superspy anytime soon. “Last season Awesome realized if there was one place in the world where he wasn’t awesome, it was on spy missions,” notes exec producer Chris Fedak. “He’d like to stay as far away from the spy world as he can.” That’s particularly true now that there’s a mini Awesome on the way. “He is going to be way more into all of the rituals of pregnancy than even Ellie is,” says fellow EP Josh Schwartz of the daddy-to-be. “Like all things in life, Awesome is going to throw himself into the pregnancy with his usual fervor.”

• atcdave says:

That sounds fun (er….Awesome!)

• JC says:

Hopefully they don’t go too far with it. That’s one of my worries for S4. Ellie and Awesome will just be the expecting couple who nags Chuck and Sarah.

• amyabn says:

Maybe they could use Awesome being in expectant daddy over drive to drive Ellie over to C&S’s apartment for sanctuary and prompt some of those Sarah-Ellie scenes that so many of us want more of!

• herder says:

When you think about it neither Chuck nor Sarah have a real role model in their life for what it is to be a couple. Neither have parents to show them what is normal, none of their friends are normal couples except Awesome and Ellie.

What ever craziness Awesome and Ellie get up to in their marriage and starting a family will likely be considered normal by default and something to aspire to by Chuck and Sarah.

42. Crumby says:

From twitter:

Goya’s homage to Awesome?

43. amyabn says:

This is funny-Zach shot this behind the scenes of Chuck. Yvonne has Bieber fever! LOL! They look like they have a ton of fun on set.

44. joe says:

My thanks to Ernie for re-factoring this page 🙂

We have a new, minor spoiler from Chuck On-Line. Tia Texada (IMBD link in the post above) will play Hortencia aka Armand Assante’s character’s wife in episode 4.04, Chuck vs. The Coup D’Etat.

• herder says:

Hortencia, Bolognia where do they come up with these names? So what is the likelihood that Casey has some sort of past with the Generalissimo’s wife?

• atcdave says:

Oh that would be so funny. And of course, Goya has never gotten over…. the loss of his dog.

• joe says:

Oh gee – I had forgotten about that dog. And you’re right, Herder. It’s gotta be that Casey has “met” the lady before. I just knew the reason that he could never set foot in Costa Gravas again wasn’t merely about the guns and bodies. That would *never* keep Casey away.

• amyabn says:

I think it will be even funnier if the Premier is still flirty with Ellie while Hortencia gets flirty with Chuck after being rebuffed by Casey. They have the same, soft features, although they go better on a woman. Anyway, Sarah and Devon are mad and get their Bartowskis back. Could be comic gold.

• Jan says:

These are all wonderful ideas. Casey and the General’s wife. Awesome and Sarah teaming up. Just plotting and speculating will make these 4 weeks fly by…I hope.

45. Crumby says:

Lauren LeFranc & Rafe Judkins wrote Chuck vs the Suitcase and will be writing 407.

• herder says:

Inscrutable title, what is a couch look anyways? One that says no way in hell are you sleeping with me tonight, just you and the couch tonight?

• joe says:

Wow! That’s minutes old. You guys are good!

Good question, herder. But it could be Devon who’s on Chuck’s couch. That would be my first guess.

Update: Oops. Have to take that back. Chuck out this picture at Chuck TV. It looks like Chuck at the beginning of 3.01!

46. JC says:

Do you have any Chuck scoop about Casey? —Melanie
MICKEY: We’ll meet two former members of Casey’s Special Ops team. One will be as grounded as the other is skittish. They’ll also, oddly, kind of remind you of Justin “I’m a Mac” Long and John “I’m a PC” Hodgman.

• herder says:

This may be a good situation for some Morgan gags. I would think that when Morgan thinks of himself he sees Justin”I’m a Mac”Long, but when others think of him they see John”I’m a PC” Hodgeman.

If true these two would be guests with a very high geek/nerd credibility.

47. alladinsgenie4u says:

Ausiello Spoiler.Sort of

Question: What are the chances Chuck will get a back-nine order? I’m freaking out over here! —Eric
Ausiello: I assumed exec producers Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz would be too. But they’re not. As Schwartz points out, “We never started a season with more than 13 episodes. Like last year, we will hope for the best, plan for the worst, and be ready to have an incredible final episode 13 if need be with a contingency plan to keep the season going.” Adds Fedak: “Episode 13 no matter what will be epic.”

For some reason *cough* Season 3 Middle Arc*cough*, the word “epic” has now lost its relevance.
Anyways – here’s hoping that we do get a back 9. Any idea as to when they (JS/CF) would know from NBC about a back 9 pickup?

• JC says:

Epic but not game changing? Fedak is slipping.

• ChuckNewbie8 says:

lol Alladins…there was this one time on twitter JS posted something in the line of “at what point does epic fail become too much” or something like it. I gather A LOT of people responded to him about the Mask.

• luckygirl says:

Oh Chris, The Boy Who Cried Epic.

• amyabn says:

I read somewhere (could have been here or over at tvbythenumbers) that Angela Bromstad has issued her standard “we are quite pleased with the direction Chuck is going” spiel. My thoughts are that they (the NBC TPTB) have screened at least the first two eps, if not up through 3 and will gauge part of the decision on that.

Also playing into the decision will be the ratings (which is always an issue-spread the word people!) and how well/poorly their other shows do.

• herder says:

I’m beginning to think that we’re going to get a series of fake out proposals throughout the year “Cubic Z” with a real one at episode 13.

And Faith, I thought the tweet by JS was something to the effect of “how long will epic fail remain the meanest internet insult available”. From the sound of it he had heard it thown at him a fair bit at that point.

• jason says:

herder, there is a twitter from someone who claimed to be on a set tour 8/23, I would assume the cubic Z ep was shooting at the time. The tweeter had a little buildup to the visit, then tweeted something that shippers will find interesting?

” Had a great time on the tour. All I have to say is: “101 Conversations to Have before you say “I Do” 6:58 PM Aug 23rd via Echofon “

• atcdave says:

The word epic induces mainly groans from me anymore; but I’m mainly excited for S4 anyway (in spite of what they say, not because!).

• kgl says:

Well he did use the word epic for the season finale, didn’t he? Which it kinda was, at least in my mind.

48. JC says:

I pity the fool who doesn’t crack up over Chuck‘s latest piece of stunt casting.

Six-time WWE champion Batista, Expendables villain Eric Roberts, and Bones squintern Joel David Moore have signed on to guest-star as Casey’s former soldier-of-fortune buddies from the Clinton era.

His A-Team, if you will.

The trio—who turn up in this season’s fourth episode, “Chuck Versus the Coup d’Etat”—have gone rogue and are back to seek revenge on their ex-comrade.

Love. It.

• jkl says:

It seems like everyone from Casey’s past have gone rouge.

• herder says:

How many guest stars can one episode have? I seems that this one will have the Generalissimo, his wife, Balki Bartokoumous, now these three soldiers of fortune that’s six. The Ring had the two Awesomes, Papa B and Chevy Chase for a total of four. Is it scheduled for some big viewing monday to account for the push?

• alladinsgenie4u says:

I believe Balki is in 4×02. But still that makes five guest stars in one episode. And most probably 4×04 will be aired in the second week of October. Excuse my ignorance – but what constitutes a big viewing Monday?

• Crumby says:

The Ring also had Bryce.

• Merve says:

“The Ring” had 7: Scott Bakula, Morgan Fairchild, Matthew Bomer, Bruce Boxleitner, Chevy Chase, Tug Coker, and Patricia Rae. So they’re not exceeding “Ring,” but there are still going to be a lot of guest stars in 4.04.

• alladinsgenie4u says:

I believe the trio will be appearing in the fifth episode titled – Chuck vs the Couch Lock and not the fourth as earlier reported.

49. alladinsgenie4u says:

Spoiler Alert:

Timothy Dalton (of James Band fame)roped in as a guest star in Season 4

Per NBC’s release, Dalton “will be playing a mysterious stranger who has a history with Chuck’s mom.”

Will he be the big bad that JS/CF were talking at Comic Con or is Mama B the big bad and Dalton is her former colleague from the CIA – sent to capture her. Thoughts?

• JC says:

Best stunt casting ever. My guess he’s Bryce to Orion and MEB.

• BDaddyDL says:

ok this is josh Schwartz post on twitter:
So excited that Timothy Dalton is going to be on CHUCK! First Bond I saw in theaters and a great comic actor as well. Big arc!!!

the fact that he says great COMEDIC actor makes me extremely happy. looks like we might have some more funny bad guys this year. NO MORE SHAW

• atcdave says:

First Bond he saw in theaters? dang I feel old! Its like when I went to see Apollo 13 with a group of friends; I went on and on about my memories of the event while they smiled politely and said nothing. I finally realized I was the only one in the group who had even been born when it happened!

Dalton….first Bond in the theater….grumble, grumble….

• herder says:

Dave, don’t feel too bad, I took my neice to lunch at Cheers in Boston the other week and she had never heard of the show before, talk about feeling old. And for the record I can remember seeing ads for Diamonds are Forever in the paper and wanting to see it but I was too young to get into the theater.

As for Timothy Dalton, I did like him as Bond in the Living Daylights and in Hot Fuzz, he should be a good addition to the show for however long his arc runs.

• ChuckNewbie8 says:

Oh man you’re not gonna be happy with this…

I don’t even know him from Bond. I know him from this movie called Beautician and the Beast with Fran Drescher! LMAO.

Wait…cheers is real? :-O

• herder says:

All the exterior shots for Cheers were from a bar called the Bull and Finch in Boston, last year they renamed it Cheers. Dalton was a good Bond in his first movie, not so much in the second (the story, not the acting) then Piece Brosnan was available and as they had wanted him ahead of Dalton he got the job.

• thinkling says:

Oh dear, George Lazenby (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) was my first Bond in the theatre. Then came Diamonds Are Forever. Feel better Dave? 🙂 And I used a slide-rule in school, but not an abacus, though I did learn how to use one, for fun.

• atcdave says:

Well I do have to thank all you guys, EXCEPT CN8, for helping me feel better. So is this officially the old farts Chuck site (um…. sorry CN8!)

50. OldDarth says:

“Best stunt casting ever. My guess he’s Bryce to Orion and MEB.”

My guess he is their Daniel Shaw.

• Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

That actually the first thing I thought.

Quickly followed by, “God I hope not. A new concept for a decent actor would be nice.” Parallels are nice but are Chuck and the gang simply a Groundhog Day of their elders.

• Merve says:

I’m kind of with you on this. I don’t mind parallels, but instead of paralleling past storylines, mirroring a fresh storyline in both the present and the past would be a better course of action.

• joe says:

I’m with you both.

I made a mistake – started to think about the fan-fiction and writing my own, sort of a conjecture on how I wish S4 would go. But I realized I was merely re-writing what we already had.

As much as I would like to see Mary Elizabeth be Stephen’s handler and she his Sarah, I’d like them to have their own story more.

• BDaddyDL says:

Joe without revealing anything private I will say it loud and proud. you could write a great fic. Just to put it out there, the talent and the other ideas are there.

• JC says:

But Dalton is charming and suave. How bout an evil Bryce.

• OldDarth says:

If that works for you go for it. But Dalton will be bad like Shaw was.

Bryce never turned bad.

• JC says:

I can never resist taking a shot a Shaw its cathartic.

But since I just read he’ll be in multiple episodes he’ll probably be their Shaw.

• herder says:

How about Mom’s brother, that way he can be Chuck and Ellie’s uncle, suave and debonair yet not necessarily evil. Maybe even someone who helps Chuck get around some of the factors that caused Mama B to run.

As an aside one bit of dialogue I wouldn’t mind hearing in the first few episodes is Sarah talking with a fellow spy (perhaps one of the Gretas’) ” ‘I thought I had heard that you were involved with Daniel Shaw’ ‘that whole Shaw thing was a mistake'”, well I can hope.

• Crumby says:

With Bryce and Shaw dead, how does it work? I mean what can they learn from the parallel, especially with Papa B out of the picture as well.

I don’t really see how this would play out.

51. JC says:

More on Dalton’s appearance. He shows up in episode 4.07 Chuck Versus the First Fight.

52. OldDarth says:

First Fight? That raise the hairs on some fan’s backs. 😉

• herder says:

Not really, it could be funny, think about the bit in Role Models (I apoligize for any faulty memory):

-honey why did you get rid of the guns?

-because you told me to

-you listened to me?

-I can’t beleive it myself

That was one of the funnier bits in that episode. A first fight done properly can be very funny, and there is the whole Orion Cave (OC) secret as a potential subject for a fight.

• Merve says:

Well, it can’t really be Chuck and Sarah’s first fight because they’ve had about a trillion fights before. (And remember: their “first fight” was in “Helicopter.”) My guess is that it references something else.

• jason says:

I would be shocked if the first fight actually took near that long OD – I would be more convinced that it will be until 4.7 until Cs get along for an entire episode – again if I am the type of fan you are referring too – i.e. a shipper that many love to taunt – that taunting did not seem to work out for the show in season 3 very much, and most of the showrunners and reviewers seem to have concluded the shippers were the ones who got season 3 right?

53. atcdave says:

Just a quick thought on the value of stunt casting. It may make little difference to most of us who the various guest stars are; but Comcast has had this blurb on the entertainment section of their front page all day: “‘Chuck’ Lands 007”. Its the first mention I’ve seen of Chuck on that site since the season finale.

54. aardvark7734 says:

From Josh Gomez’s Twitter page:

Just awesome. Is it the refurbished Orion Cave? Or just Castle 2.0? If it’s the former, than Sarah is on the secret by at least 4.04, which they’re filming now.

55. Ernie Davis says:

Are we ready to SQUEE yet?

• Faith says:

I still say it’s too soon lol.

• atcdave says:

I’m hopeful, but I still bet no. I’m thinking November (4.07+) at the soonest.

• Crumby says:

Wasn’t that all “who’s getting married” stuff about an engagement more than a wedding anyway?

• joe says:

I think Kristin is just playing with her fellow Chuck fans and fellow ‘shippers.

At Spoiler TV, there’s a vote going on about Kristin’s two remaining couples. The voting there reveals that of the two, the couple most likely to get married this season is…
..>0 NO CARRIER …..>>….

56. jason says:

3 more weeks, it is watch firefly night for me

anyone tell who the picture is in the lower right corner? almost looks like chuck (or morgan)

• joe says:

I was trying to figure out who that was myself. I don’t think it’s either one, Jason – the head seems to be a different shape.

I can’t get over Morgan in a suit and tie. I’m sure Sarah is going to tell him that he looks quite dapper.

Added: Twitterer cmurderf put a comment in the pict. that just made me laugh. It reads: “The good, the beautiful, the Morgan.”

57. aardvark7734 says:

From Jimmy_J over at GG, pointing at Adam Baldwin’s Twitter page:

Jimmy’s comment, which I agree with, is that both Yvonne and Zach are coincidentally obscuring their ring fingers, Yvonne almost awkwardly so.

Makes my spidey-sense tingle, it does.

• OldDarth says:

Engagement rings, wedding aisles, ….

… this really could be the last season…..

• aardvark7734 says:

So this is either just clumsy or it’s a hoax. I honestly have no idea which, but I hope it’s not a hoax done in collusion with Kristin. Because that would just be a colossal misread of fan sentiment heading into S4.

It should be all about “earn back our trust”, not “here’s a lollipop… HAH, pulled it away!”

• atcdave says:

Could TPTB really misread fan sentiment on Chuck?! Say it ain’t so!

• atcdave says:

That is an interesting picture. If they are hiding it on purpose the photo isn’t exactly candid. I can’t imagine what a pain it would be to hide a detail like rings if that is soon to be a fixture with their costumes; seriously, they still have three weeks (at least) to keep it under wraps. Given how every device anymore includes camera, its a huge security issue to ensure no “accidental” pictures leak out.
And OD, I don’t get what one has to do with the other. Chuck and Sarah being married should have little impact on the “A” plots. Even the dreaded s-angst was mostly done away with by the end of S3. Chuck and Sarah (mostly) happy together would play well with most fans for many years. Even JJ Abrams seems to have decided its possible to tell a spy story with married leads. I know several viewers who are convinced the show would only get better by making it official.

My biggest concern is that Chuck seems to have parted ways with his trusty Harmony 880 that served him well since S1; I believe that’s a Harmony 1 he’s holding. The older model was soooo much better looking…

• BDaddyDL says:

cant wait for the announcement tomorrow. big time ratings if they are getting married

• JC says:

You know depending on how its done they could double dip on the marriage episodes. Say its a spur of the moment type thing or something. Then down the line they have a real wedding.

Also since fans aren’t happy about them keeping things from each other, that could be their secret. Nobody knows but them and then they announce their plans to get married down the line.

• Ernie Davis says:

Awwww, but look, Sarah is wearing the blue top with the little buttons! Chuck’s favorite!

Seriously though originally the Kristin reveal above was only supposed to be narrowed down to three. My recollection was that the wedding would be totally out of the blue and we’d never see it coming was how she put it.

So think this out, a show was going to spring a wedding on us with no preparation? Kristin had the scoop but could only narrow it down, but apparently she got the go ahead later? So whoever it is really wants some publicity from this. Consider, if Kristin reveals that Chuck and Sarah get married out of the blue in an episode where we’ll never see it coming, but not the episode, and we have episodes with names like Aisle of Terror and Cubic Z, what does that do for the anticipation, and hopefully the ratings, of every Chuck episode till they do the deed and get married? And if the cast just happen to awkwardly obscure things that could be hints in candid photos on set? Well, bonus.

I’m not saying it’s a lock, I don’t know a thing about Grey’s so I have no idea how a similar thing would play. But Kristin has always been a big Chuck booster, and this strikes me as an interesting viral/social media campaign utilizing the core fanbase to generate some buzz. I’d give it even money without knowing a thing about Grey’s anatomy.

• Crumby says:

I think that a wedding is very likely to happen by 413, except maybe if they got the Back 9 but it’ll be at least an engagement. If they manage to attract new viewers with those stuff, why not? CS are together this season anyway.

• joe says:

Seriously though originally the Kristin reveal above was only supposed to be narrowed down to three. My recollection was that the wedding would be totally out of the blue and we’d never see it coming was how she put it.

So think this out, a show was going to spring a wedding on us with no preparation?

Ernie, this reminds me of a story. (Yeah, yeah. I know. Bear with me!)

A teacher told her class on Friday that there were going to be a surprise quiz the following week. The students would not know which day. Bright, but mischievous Joey raised his hand and said “Teacher, if it gets to be Thursday and we haven’t had the quiz yet, then we know it can’t be on Friday, because we won’t be surprised. So we know it can’t be on Friday. Likewise, if it gets to be Wednesday, we know it can’t be on Thursday, because it can’t be on Friday and we wouldn’t be surprised on Thursday. And so on.” Confidently, Joey continued “So that means we can’t have the quiz.”

The teacher gave them the quiz on Tuesday and surprised everybody.

• Ernie Davis says:

I think Joe, you reinforce my point. Here we have a perfect example of the faulty premise. Joey equated not knowing which day the quiz would be with students being surprised. A faulty premise. The students were specifically told there would be a quiz, so logically they shouldn’t be surprised to be given a quiz on any day of the week. By taking the faulty premise as the goal, i.e. the goal was to surprise the students as opposed to getting the students to prepare and study, and applying the logic of the flawed premise, the students reached a logical, but incorrect conclusion. In fact the logic is far simpler given Joey’s premise. If you are told in advance that there will be a surprise quiz it can not be a surprize and therefore vanishes in a bit of circular logic.

Now I’ll be tuning in every week no matter, but say we’re a more casual viewer who DVR’s typically unless it looks like a really good one. Say also the wedding is going to be a big draw. If we know there is a wedding, but not when, we’ll be tuning in to see if this is the one with the wedding. If we knew there was a wedding in 4.06, we’d be tuning in for 4.06. It is actually kind of clever if they can pull it off.

• jason says:

wow – miss a little time and miss alot, don’t know if anyone posted this, but the final couple reveal is at noon ET TODAY on this site:

if they reveal chuck and sarah are getting married this season today, I would be dumbfounded, much of a shipper as I am, I would not have expected that at all – I would however, really, really, be pleased at the news

• herder says:

One of the things that I was thinking that they could do this year is play out the whole engagement thing by showing Sarah to have serious issues about trust and commitment, not too big a stretch. I think it would be funny to have Ellie or Awesome introduce this in one of the early episode by reviewing the wedding videos and asking Sarah about the way she reacted on the bouquet toss. That way they could use the great footage they have of Yvonne swatting down the bouquet from season two.

This didn’t make it on screen in the Ring, but as a flashback it might work and it was pretty funny. At the same time it could serve to illustrate one of the issues that Chuck and Sarah still have.

58. Big Kev says:

Not to pour any fuel onto this fire – but tomorrow (Tues) they are filming at St Brendans Catholic Church…
Having the wedding before the wedding themed episodes – now no one would see that coming!

• joe says:

Okay. Now I’m officially impressed with this line of reasoning.

• atcdave says:

I’m beginning to get optimistic about this. I seriously think, in addition to some of the stunt casting, this is the sort of thing that will generate lots of buzz. It should interest even a lot of casual viewers and possibly win back some of those viewers we lost last season.

• herder says:

Hmmm, Aisle of Terror, filming at St Brendan’s Church, why does this spell fake out to me? Big Mike wedding, something else, my guess is that there are a number of fake outs before the real thing. Of course Kristen (Hannah is not what she seems) could prove me wrong within the hour.

• herder says:

Another possibility, christening Baby Awesome although why that would be terrifing is beyond me. Perhaps all that awesomeness concentrated in one place.

• Ernie Davis says:

Consider the most likely godparents and how they might feel, especially if Sarah has to hold the baby.

• thinkling says:

Sarah holding the baby would be a good scene. Plus I can just see the range of emotions play across Yvonne’s face. Even funnier would be if Sarah were the one that the baby snuggled in with and quit crying.

59. OldDarth says:

The short synopis for the 4×01 episode :
Chuck and Morgan search the globe for Chuck’s mother (Linda Hamilton); Casey and Sarah track an operative (Dolph Lundgren) of the mysterious Volkoff Industries; Ellie shares big news.

As predicted Casey and Sarah will be following one track while Chuck and Morgan another. When their paths cross the fireworks will start.

• thinkling says:

Yeah, Sarah didn’t look too happy on the promo preview. I just hope by the end of the episode, there are some different kind of fireworks. I want to be left with a big grin at the end of 4.1, instead of a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach as in the end of 3.1

• atcdave says:

Yeah, let’s hope things go very differently this year. I already don’t like the synopsis, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

• JC says:

It’s safe to assume whatever missions Sarah and Casey are working on will tie into MEB somehow. So Sarah might be holding back info from Chuck that relates to his mother.

Lets just see how it plays out before we jump to conclusions.

• thinkling says:

I didn’t think of that angle, JC … interesting. It would be a little more balanced if they both had a secret they were trying to figure out how to tell the other. I could live with the secrecy better if their desire is to tell each other rather than deceive each other. That would also join the two worlds very quickly. I hope you’re right.

OK, I’m trying not to jump to conclusions 🙂 … really

• jason says:

@jc – fedak seems to go over the top with some issues, leaving the season, two of those issues were morgan’s replacing sarah as the infallible comic book hero and chuck’s lies – there is no doubt sarah has a lifetime of deception on her resume (but her lying to chuck is not the current over the top issue IMO

you might have a blind spot about chuck, but his lying seems cringeworthy because it seems out of character. I would have to guess there is some point in this chuck lying, compared to the other characters, chuck has been written well the past 3 seasons.

@dave – for some reason the storyline does not thrill me at all either, the highlighting of the chuck morgan relationship, interviews with each other and with TPTB where the words bromance dominate the story, sitting on each others lap at comic con, their hugging and kissing in public while yvonne watches them like a little sister who isn’t invited into the tree house – lets just hope it is intentionally a ploy – if I learned anything from season 3, it is possible that it is not a ploy, and by about episode 3 or 4, I will be ready to punch the next fanboy who raves about the lovely bromance evolving on the show.

I want about a 9 to 1 ration of CS ROMANCE to some dumb bromance scene. I find chuck and morgan to be booooorrrriinng – they really don’t have chemistry as they both are comics. They need others to be funny with and thru. Morgan at the opera was awful, till casey showed up, then the comedy began, no wonder chuck fell asleep on him.

• OldDarth says:

‘It’s safe to assume whatever missions Sarah and Casey are working on will tie into MEB somehow. So Sarah might be holding back info from Chuck that relates to his mother.’

Absolutely and my expectations are that Sarah and Casey will be operating on the belief that MamaB is the Big Bad. This will provide the tension between Chuck and Sarah for the season as well.

• Crumby says:

I don’t think Sarah and Casey would expect that Mama B’s involved at that point. The CIA might know but they wouldn’t tell them. The government didn’t know who Orion was and I don’t see why suddenly they’d link Mama B to all of this. They might know her under a fake name or something however, not knowing that she’s MEB.

• jason says:

I think the cringe will come from not from sarah withholding from chuck, but chuck withholding from sarah i.e. sarah asking ‘what are you and morgan doing HERE’ – and chuck saying trust me sarah, I would never lie to you, morgan and I are at a comic book convention here in russia – we did not know it was the KGB headquarters, but lucky for casey and you we did – honest, trust me, I would never lie, really, the whole while morgan is sitting on chuck’s lap looking for hugs and kisses – and saying chuck, we gotta go home now and work on our ‘project’ together, you can talk to sarah later

• JC says:

I don’t think Sarah and Casey will know Chuck’s mom is involved right away. My guess is they run into her in the premier. Like you I think she’s living under an alias but she’s well known throughout the spy world. It wouldn’t surprise me if she knew Sarah from her training days(Omaha Project?). Mama B lets something slip(bracelet) that makes Sarah realize it’s Chuck’s mom.

You’ll get no argument from me that they go to far things to make a point. Make no mistake I had issues with the lying in the back six once it became stupidly drawn out. But Chuck has lied the whole series when it comes to protecting the people he loves. It all comes down to how it’s done. You call it a blind spot, I call it understanding where Chuck is coming from. Maybe the fandom should give him the benefit of the doubt they give Sarah.

• Crumby says:

I’m not sure but I think the cast said that they didn’t have a scene with Linda Hamilton in 401. That doesn’t mean they don’t run into her but it won’t be much if they do.

• jason says:

JC the anger about chuck lies isn’t with chuck, it is with TPTB, and a fear that the lies will be used as a major plot driver, the lies don’t make me dislike chuck, any more than shaw made me dislike sarah, shaw made me dislike TPTB

• atcdave says:

Jason, I share most of your fears and you hit the nail on the head as far as what I don’t want to see.
But I really do think they’re smarter than that. I’m cautiously optimistic that in a month or two we’ll all be very pleased with how things unfold. After all they’ve done right 2 1/2 out 3 seasons so far, right?

• herder says:

One of the things let out over the past little while was that someone was to come between Chuck and his search for his mother. Could the mysterious Volkov (Timothy Dalton?) be that person.

• Crumby says:

So I’m gonna go optimistic here and speculate that Chuck runs into Sarah and Casey in 401 (promo) and tell them about his search. (Fedak did tell that he wanted Team B back together again right?)

Chuck will then go back to the CIA to use their resources, know where their investigation is and operate more easily.

Therefore Chuck and Sarah have the same amount of information on Mama B and I don’t think Beckman would trust Sarah to keep informations from Chuck.

The government will probably have different opinions than Chuck about some stuff and I think the tension within the Team will come from this (Chuck/Morgan will probably don’t see everything like Casey/Sarah).

At some point, some missions might get interesting with maybe counter-missions a la Alias because they don’t want the government to discover something or they will need whatever the mission is for.

Chuck keeping from Sarah that is searching the globe with Morgan, and Sarah keeping from Chuck that she might have information on his mother, are two things I don’t want to see. Even if TPTB managed to find good reasons for them to do that, I’m not sure they’ll be able to sell it (if the lying had a purpose in the Back 6, it failed me and make me like Chuck a little less). So I’m rooting for something else.

Of course, the big question with my speculation is: what about Ellie and Awesome? Will we be back to lying square one?

• atcdave says:

Just has Jason gives voice to my fears; Crumby, you’ve managed to state most of my hopes. I think you are probably closer to what will actually happen.

• thinkling says:

Ditto. I hope you’re right Crumby. I want Chuck and Sarah working together from the start (at least by the end of 4.01), and I can’t see Chuck staying out of the CIA for very long. I don’t, however want a split that pits Morgan and Chuck against Sarah and Casey. I’m not sure how the foursome dynamic will work, but too much Chuck/Morgan would get old very fast for me.

But since TPTB say they learned their lesson, I hope that means they get that C/S are the central relationship of *both* spy world and real world in the Chuckverse. And I take heart at Yvonne’s “things get very couple-y.” That makes me smile and hope.

60. OldDarth says:

Zap2It has posted publicity stills for 4.01:

61. A Friend of the Family says:

Two words: Vladimir Volkoff. If you don’t know the name, do the google. Season 4 in a nutshell.

62. A Friend of the Family says:

Ask yourself one question: How can Orion LOGICALLY reappear as a player in the spy world when the NSA (via Beckman and Casey) and the CIA (via Sarah) know that the original Orion is dead? They would LOGICALLY beat a path to the door of the supposedly “retired” Intersect 2.0, Chuck Bartowski.

How the TPTB handle that logical issue and how the fans respond to that handling will make or break the season’s episodes.

• Ernie Davis says:

An interesting question, but there were a few things we don’t know because they were left ambiguous. Clearly Team B and Beckman all know Orion is Chuck’s dad and that he is now dead. How far outside that circle did that bit of info travel? This is something that aside from Bryce, who is dead, Shaw, who is captured, and Justin, also captured, we don’t know for sure. Orion might be something Team B and Beckman might want to keep to themselves.

Now clearly there are some fuzzy areas because The Ring seemed to have figured out who Orion was, but aside from Shaw and Justin we can’t confirm who knew that. And aside from those two, who knew of his relation to Chuck and Ellie?

There’s also the question of the intersect project. It was supposedly shut down, and we saw Beckman dragged away as she was destroying files, so how much of the information on the intersect, Orion, and Chuck survived? How much of the Ring intel survived or was captured?

My guess, based on TPTB’s MO, it depends on what the plot requires, and that may change. At a superficial level they’ll probably maintain the logic of it, but we probably will either be having too much fun to notice, or we won’t want to look too hard. TPTB have built in enough ambiguity to say there are a limited number of people who know, and they wouldn’t share the information (’cause as Jeff’s mom says “Knowledge is powder.”) but also enough ambiguity to allow the villain of the week to know everything.

• atcdave says:

I do like Ernie’s scenario. Chuck can keep secrets from Beckman, that never would bother me.
And just to clarify, I do not object to the way Morgan has been used so far in the show. And I suspect we’ll get more of the same. After all, a year ago they were talking quite a bit about the importance of the bromance in Chuck’s life; and while I’ll always react to such talk with a shrug, I do admit it was well played for comedy last year. Given that every seasons show poster has featured Chuck and Sarah together (assuming those were Sarah’s legs for S2!) I think they do understand Chuck and Sarah together is 80% of the show’s draw for many of us. It still bothers me a bit that we don’t see the mechanism for how they will be working together. I hope that is obvious from 4.01; but I will give them a little time on this.

• JC says:

I think FOF means is if Chuck is running around under an alias doing Orion type missions how can’t Sarah, Casey or Beckman connect it back to him.

• Ernie Davis says:

Well if he leaves a calling card that says “Orion was here” with a photo I think they can connect it, otherwise it might take an episode or two of Beckman&Co being aware of unique events that can only be attributed to the real Orion before they make the connection. Someone doing Orion-like things is easily explained away for a few episodes, especially if Beckman or Team B aren’t aware of the true nature of the events. Even then the wider spy world could be unaware of who Orion is, allowing him to be an “independant player”, working for Beckman.

From the sounds of it Chuck will be back with the CIA by the end of the first episode. How much of his independance they try to preserve after that will be interesting.

• OldDarth says:

Would be very disappointed if Chuck rejoined the CIA. Big step back for the character.

• Crumby says:

On one video that Zac put on twitter, the stunt man that plays Chuck (I think it’s Dave Castillo?) was wearing the Nerd Herd shirt and tie. I think they were shooting episode 403. I’m guessing if Chuck is a Nerd Herder again, he’ll be CIA again as well. I might not be right about the video though.

• Ernie Davis says:

When I say back with the CIA I mean working with Team B and/or Beckman in some capacity, not necessarily as an employee of the CIA. I still hold out hope for the independant contractor analyst cover by day and Orion, Team B’s secret weapon by night. That way his big secret is being kept from the CIA employees in the BuyMore.

• atcdave says:

I’m pretty OK with Chuck going back to the agency; in fact, I’d say either that or Sarah leaving the agency to work with Chuck is pretty much required for me to really enjoy the show. Ideally, I want to see the whole team back together; but Chuck and Sarah on screen together AND on missions together (no bromance , please) is what I want to see.

• thinkling says:

I agree with Dave. C/S on screen together and no mo bro-mance. Chuck is with Sarah which should mean his bromance needs to change.

With Beckman becoming more of a regular, I think Chuck will end up back with the CIA. And that’s the way I think it should go. If Sarah leaves (as you say Dave that’s the other option), what do you do with Casey and General Beckman?

Down the road I’d like to see Beckman providing cover for Team B who would be doing those Orion things that governments are afraid to do. (Deep cover ghost team operating way outside the normal channels and protocols) She would protect them from interference and give them legitimacy (license to kill and all that) and resources. The CIA dynamic would change dramatically, but for me I still want it to be there.

• atcdave says:

Wow Thinkling, we’ve really got the “ditto” thing going today. I like your take on CIA/Orion operations.

• herder says:

Well, presumably Chuck will be associated with the CIA in someway in the first episode as he is working there (in a suit no less) apparantly as the link between regular Buy More employees and the CIA cover employees.

By the end I would expect that he has some sort of loose arrangement (maybe the Greta’s are told that if there is a situation involving Sarah being in danger they can call on Chuck) that allows him the run of the store and Castle too. But not so much of an arrangement that he is once again a CIA agent.

This in turn will develope into the situation that Thinkling set out above.

• thinkling says:

Caveat: Didn’t mean to come down so hard on Morgan. He’s a great character. I like him as part of the team and even as Chuck’s best friend, but never as Sarah’s rival (either in their relationship or screen time). He has been very supportive of their relationship, and as long as that continues, I’m good with Morgan. Plus, maybe he will be busy enough with his own relationship (Alex)…

• atcdave says:

Yeah I get that Thinkling. Morgan is often a fun character. The only thing I didn’t care for last season was Chuck having to go through Morgan to figure out he still loved Sarah (the week after he said the same thing with Ellie, or was he lying then? oh brother, S3 was a mess)
But Morgan and Casey were the two characters pretty well served last year, and I’m fine with something similar this season. But I am jealous of Chuck/Sarah screen time. Its the primary draw of the show for me, its what I watch for. Yes, I’m a ‘shipper.

• Crumby says:

@Dave – I think his conversation with Ellie wasn’t about Sarah but about dishonesty. Chuck told her she was “half a spy”, I understood it has she was half right.

He was moving to fast with Hannah and he felt dishonest, but it was because he was a spy and not because he still loved Sarah.

Of course, he was lying to himself about that, and that’s what Morgan helped him to see in Beard.

• Crumby says:

I just saw a picture of Stacy Keibler with Josh Gomez and Zac Levi, and Zac was wearing the Nerd Herd uniform.

• thinkling says:

That’s the way I read Fake Name and Beard, too, Crumby. Chuck told Ellie he was living a lie. Ellie applied it to the only area of his life she knew about – Hannah v. Sarah. But Chuck knew (regardless of whether or not he still loved Sarah) that his deception with Hannah was on another plain altogether (the spy plain), and for that it was dishonest. So, Ellie only knew the half of it (half a spy). But it pointed him back in the right direction.

Morgan finished what Ellie started. He was the other half a spy, seeing that not only was Chuck deceiving others, but also himself… with regards to Sarah.

• OldDarth says:

“When I say back with the CIA I mean working with Team B and/or Beckman in some capacity, not necessarily as an employee of the CIA. Gotcha Ernie. My very belief and hope as well. Beckman will act as Chuck’s shield or Commissioner Gordon or even ‘beard’ if you will.

• jason says:

be interesting if beckman was running cover for orion all along, that might make this all ‘transition’ somewhat easier? Those in know, beckman, casey, morgan, sarah – all government agents except for Chuck, who is a buymore employee / CIA consultant as his ‘day’ job – with orion a secret except for the inner team. The CIA consultant would give him reason to go on CIA missions without losing the Orion identity – kind of like clark kent and superman, kent’s assignments often take him to the action?

• James Lee says:

The problem, IMHO, is that that, once again, TPTB made a key mistake. If Chuck and Sarah are life partners, shouldn’t Chuck’s FIRST move after leaving Orion’s cave have been to consult with/conspire with/confide in Sarah?

If the season starts with Chuck keeping this kind of secret from Sarah, we know two things:
1) TPTB really really do not understand how commited couples handle things like this.
2) There’s going to be a series of phony-baloney of conceits like Chuck was just protecting Sarah, he didn’t want to compromise her CIA position, his promised Orion to keep it a secret, blah, blah, blah.

It may (and probably will) resolve itself quickly, but it all smacks of the silly, manipulative garbage they started with in Season 3. TPTB keep inventing reasons why Chuck and Sarah don’t talk to each other and everything that has ever flowed from that (Shaw, the CRM, Prague, you name it)has been hateful to watch, idiotic, repetitive and murderous on the ratings.

• jason says:

the guess is that Chuck’s first move will be to morgan and not sarah, and that will be hard to swallow for me – funny – if I were fedak’s dad – I would ask him – did you learn anything at all in season 3, you ae starting season 4 exactly like prague, you only have 13 episodes to convince these fans, why start off with an act that will infuriate the same crowd that didn’t like season 3?

james lee – are you new to these boards, can’t recall seeing you b4, welcome

• joe says:

Hi, James. I don’t recall seeing your handle before. Welcome to the discussion.

You have a point. But my take is that, as amazing as they are, Chuck and Sarah both suffer from serious character flaws. Chuck is insecure and fears being abandoned (by Sarah, this time); Sarah remains closed-mouthed about her emotions and is still not good with relationships. They’re works in progress.

The good thing is that both tend to not make the same mistakes twice. They’ll find new, hopefully entertaining ways to screw up, but in the long run they do move forward.

By comparison, I’ve seen little evidence of Booth and Brennen moving forward, or Tony and Ziva, for that matter. Much to my surprise, even Leonard and Penny have taken two steps backwards. Go figure.

• atcdave says:

Hey James welcome to the site! I do agree with your comments 1000%. I’ve been talking about wanting to see Chuck and Sarah on missions together. As far as screen time goes that is the point. But you’re exactly right to point out it comes down to a trust issue; the reason they need to be together on screen is to show they trust each other with everything that’s important in life. Even if they make it right by the end of 4.01 (I’m 87% sure they will), it still leaves the unsettling truth Chuck needs to get caught in the act before he’ll let Sarah in on what’s really important in his life (yes, I hold Sarah to the same standard but she hasn’t been the issue since 3.13).

And it all does make you wonder about TPTB’s home lives and views of adult relationships (as in, no wonder Hollywood marriages last as Girl Scout cookies in my pantry).

• OldDarth says:

“The problem, IMHO, is that that, once again, TPTB made a key mistake. If Chuck and Sarah are life partners, shouldn’t Chuck’s FIRST move after leaving Orion’s cave have been to consult with/conspire with/confide in Sarah?”

How can Chuck do that though. If he confides in Sarah she will be duty bound to report the OC and all Orion’s Intel will be confiscated by the government.

My guess this is the very issue that comes to a head in episode 2 and the resultant relationship bump in episode 3.

• Crumby says:

Sarah has put Chuck first, over the job, in the past and I’m sure she’d be ready to do the same again.

The fact that Chuck doesn’t trust her with this is pretty significant. Sure he can say that he doesn’t want to put her in that position but at the end of the day, he needs to wonder one thing: would Sarah prefer being lied to by him or keeping this for the CIA?

• OldDarth says:

Shrug. Maybe Chuck does not want to burden Sarah with carrying that knowledge to work every day.

Chuck is torn between his duty to his father and his love for Sarah. I do not envy the guy.

• Crumby says:

Yeah I get the all not wanting to burden Sarah thing, that’s probably the excuse he will use.

• JC says:

There’s also the possibility that Chuck finds out something that makes his mother look like a villain and he hides it from Sarah. It’d be a nice callback to Sarah not wanting Chuck to know her dad was con artist.

• thinkling says:

Sorry, I don’t get not wanting to burden Sarah. She loves him. That’s what love is, sharing burdens as well as joys. If Chuck doesn’t want to burden Sarah with something as significant as finding his mother, then he doesn’t get that whole I-want-to-spend-the-rest-of-my-life-with-you thing. But wait; I suspect Chuck does get that, and it’s TPTB who forget it when it suits their angst glee or their twisted notion of relationship development and compelling TV.

• Crumby says:

It’s not so much that he doesn’t want to burden her with his “problems” but more that he doesn’t want her to have to lie for him to the cia.

• joe says:

Thinkling, I love the thought. But love is also about learning these things. It doesn’t come naturally, or easily.

At least, not to me, it didn’t.

• atcdave says:

I get that Sarah has a conflict of interest where Chuck is concerned, which is what the whole “being compromised” thing is all about. I’m just saying, as a viewer, I am vastly more interested in the “Chuck and Sarah vs. the world” theme than I am in any sort of angst fest about divided loyalties. That’s what a large number of us want to see. We occasionally get that (like in Colonel and Honeymooners), but it looks like they’re going away from it, at least at the start of S4. So bummer. Hope they get it back.

• thinkling says:

Yeah, Joe, you’re right. I need to give them that. Relationships take work. So, as long as they are headed in that direction of making their relationship work, being committed to it, that’s reasonable … getting their couple feet, as Yvonne said. Two things I ask, though: 1) resolve issues within the episode, so the end of the episode leaves them in a good place, having progressed and learned, love strengthened. 2) I don’t want season 4 to be a problem-du-jour kind of thing. Some episodes need to be … Happy (for lack of a better word).

And, Dave, I’m with you. I would much rather see Chuck and Sarah against the world scenarios than conflict between them. Their growing pains should serve to strengthen them, and we should see their strength growing and solidifying on every mission, like the Charles-es’s.

63. OldDarth says:

‘How can Orion LOGICALLY reappear as a player in the spy world when the NSA (via Beckman and Casey) and the CIA (via Sarah) know that the original Orion is dead? They would LOGICALLY beat a path to the door of the supposedly “retired” Intersect 2.0, Chuck Bartowski.’

What is the issue? That is going to happen regardless of what name Chuck uses. In fact, he may not take on the Orion name until after that happens.

• joe says:

I have a question; How secure is Gen. Beckman in her job now?

Oh, this is speculation to the nth degree. But there’s going to be some aftermath to the Shaw/Ring incident, right? Why is she moving to Burbank? I wouldn’t be too surprised to find that she’s just a bit rogue from the CIA herself, now, and has Casey’s support. I could see them, in my fevered imagination, going to Chuck (and Sarah!) for help relatively soon all independent of the CIA. They could be the one’s that encourage him to be the new Orion despite Ellie’s wishes.

• OldDarth says:

Joe, maybe Beckman has been demoted a rank and put back in the field and managing the BuyMore CIA Base of Operations is her new assignment.

• Crumby says:

Joe, is she really moving to Burbank? I know she’ll show some leg in 401 (Go Duck!) but will she stay? I haven’t read anything about that, did you?

Maybe she’s just coming to see how the BM is doing and introduce the Gretas. She may be checking on the Intersect too. But that’s strictly professional of course. 🙂

64. mxpw says:

Question: I’ve had a rough day. Do you think you could give me a Chuck scoop and make it better? —Jenny
Ausiello: Chuck and Sarah will be swapping genders this season, and their relationship could suffer as a result. Allow exec producer Josh Schwartz to explain: “In their relationship, Sarah is kind of the guy and Chuck is a little bit more of the emotional one. Chuck is someone who is very comfortable with commitment. And Sarah’s only real commitment is to people that she feels are probably going to die in the line of duty.” Adds fellow EP Chris Fedak: “Chuck also has a lot of access to his emotions and Sarah is one who likes to keep her emotions under wraps to a degree.”

I…I have no words, honestly. Did they really just imply that Sarah was NOT committed to Chuck and that the job is more important to her than the relationship?

• alladinsgenie4u says:

Then what was the point of the back 6 – was it not to show that Sarah has come a long way in terms of relationship issues – “All I can think about is a future with you” comes to mind. Isn’t that commitment of a very high degree.

So gender swapping – does that mean Sarah will become more and more emotional whereas Chuck will become sort of cold and withdrawn.?

I am a bit confused with this. Anyone care to explain? Please?

• Jan says:

I’m sure I have no greater insight than any of the already posted comments. But after “Stay in the Car” Chuck has stopped his girly screams, there could be tension as both he and Sarah vie for their standing in the relationship. And, after his lying to her about so much in the back 6…as well as his caving into Ellie’s demands without even consulting Sarah about quitting, it’s very possible that she’s not prepared to move forward without some guarantees about honesty and an equal say in how they shape their relationship.

Still, much of what others have said, including Yvonne, revolve around Chuck and Sarah moving thru “couple-y things” and finding their “couple feet.”

Schwartz and Fedak can’t seem to find a way to talk about CHUCK w/out dealing with tension and angst. Even after all the assurances of Chuck and Sarah as a couple, they like keeping Chucksters on edge.

I guess Chuck and Sarah will be like most couples. Relationships take work, whether you’re in or out of the spy game.

• Faith says:

Alladins, this basically means that the status quo as of S2 remains.

Chuck will want to talk about his feelings and Sarah, being uncomfortable with anything involving emotions will shy away.

I don’t have a problem with this. In fact I like it. It’s a return to form so to speak. Just because they’re together and things are going great doesn’t mean her past and her issues wouldn’t affect their future. Where they go from here is really what’s important. So yes, Sarah is more comfortable with the job and less with commitment but so long as we end up always where Living Dead left us (“before you, the only future I can think of is my next mission but now the only future I can think of is one with you”) all is good. By end up I don’t mean an arc…end the episode with hope! That is essential.

I’ve said it before but everything in this relationship will be a struggle for Sarah. Every milestone, every step. Just because she’s in love and she’s admitted it doesn’t mean everything automatically becomes easy. It’s not. And I like that. I like that it’s not simple…I like that there’s conflict and realism tied to who she was, who she is and who she is with Chuck. Happily ever after may be real but it comes with a “caveat or two” (quoted for Pushing Daisies fans 🙂 ).

In the end at the very least this isn’t angst for angst sake…aka PLI.

• Kisku says:

Yeah, same. Sarah was always more of the “guy” in the relationship, so gender swap may mean she is becoming more of the “woman”. Although the way they frazed it, this could mean they are back to Sarah being closed one…although it would not make sense considering where they went in back six.

So call me slightly confused.

• Crumby says:

I didn’t understand it like that. I think what they were saying is that she used to commit to people that were likely to die (Bryce, Shaw…) so it wasn’t that good of commitment in a way. She didn’t really see herself with them in the future. Like she said in Tooth, the only thing she used to think about what the next mission. But now she’s planning a life with Chuck. So it is a really different kind of commitment, and probably something she’s having a hard time with.

I heard Zac Levi saying something related to that. I can’t remember where though. But basically, he said that Sarah has never been “domesticated” (his word) and that it’ll play into their relationship.

But I don’t really see that as news, I mean commitment issues and emotional constipation? Sounds like Sarah to me. I think it’ll be more a problem of how to be in the relationship and how to handle it whether that she want it or not, they’ve established the commitment to each other last season.

• mxpw says:

I’m just really confused. I have to echo Kisku here. What they described is how the relationship dynamics have always been like. So are they saying Chuck will become more Sarah-like and Sarah become more Chuck-like? Or are they saying Sarah is going to take a big step backward?

I like your thoughts, Crumby, but they just made me scratch my head more. By the end of S3, it seemed Sarah was ready to jump into the relationship with both feet and Chuck was the one hesitating and being dragged along. Now we may go back to Sarah being difficult?

Is it too much to ask for a little consistency?

• mxpw says:

Stupid lack of edit option.

Anyway, or does this mean we’re going to have Chuck be the difficult one?

• Crumby says:

I really think it’s Sarah who will have her “domestication” issues. I remember Zac using that specific word.

I think it’ll play like in Role Models with the moving in thing. She didn’t say “no”, but she said “it’s too soon”, “why rush things” and let the discussion opened. She needed her time to assimilate the idea.

After the honeymoon phase and that Chuck has been out of the game for 3 months, she might have a hard time with “normal” life. But her commitment is there. However because of Chuck abandonment issues, her unability to express her feelings is problematic.

• jason says:

3.14 the acted nice toward each other, 3.15 sarah was closed off, 3.16 thru 3.19 I submit chuck was closed off – season 4 we are having a gender switch, I’m going with chuck still closed off, sarah going WTF is going on with ‘my chuck’ if it is the other way around, I don’t have a clue, sort of don’t care, I’ll just watch the 13 episodes and enjoy them best I can, if they continue to jack CS around all 13 episodes, that will be it, I don’t think even a engagement 12 hrs and 55 minutes into the season could save it then.

• jason says:

I think alot like last season, the wedding rumor, engagement rumor, assurances the showrunners get it, etc, etc, expectations run wild, then reality of serialized angst all season long, lack of communication, etc – what I don’t think TPTB understand is the show made it this long in spite of the way CS angst was played, not because of it.

• Ernie Davis says:

Well in the back 6 we saw a preview, suddenly Sarah was emoting all over the place and telling Chuck to turn off his spy mode, and Chuck was keeping secrets to protect Sarah. We’ve seen the role reversal already. IMHO.

mxpw, anxious as I am to read Bank job I’m waiting. I go on vacation in late September, and am I right to assume this approximately 4 chapter story will be done thereabouts? Sorry, but I just don’t always find 3,500 words satisfying. 😉

• JC says:

My gut feeling is the problems will be ones that should have been addressed in the back six that they glossed over. Just as long as they’re real and not manufactured for the sole purpose of having relationship drama I’m good.

• atcdave says:

Schwedak have gift for say things that really PO their fans. I HOPE it means their roles will switch a little this season, with Chuck manning up in certain ways as Sarah becomes more sensitive and open. That seems to be what we saw a little of late in S3.
But it really sounds awful.

• Crumby says:

The thing is that, this statement is really unclear and with what they’ve done last year, we fear for the worse. But it may be nothing much. We already knew there would be bumps by 403. They might be done with it by 404…

• thinkling says:

Since the statement is so unclear and knowing that TPTB love to yank our collective chain … I choose to ignore this and give weight to the adamant refrains of C/S are together and couple-y. Now, where is that river in Egypt?

• Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

Remember, a lot of the filth that came out of their mouths last year turned out as they said or much worst.

• atcdave says:

Yeah Joseph way to make us all feel really good again! geez. You are exactly right. We tried so hard to spin the c**p we were hearing a year ago, all the way through Fake Name when we mostly gave up.
Its maddening that they can create such a fun world and characters, but are convinced they need to PO their fans. I do think we will be much happier with the product this season, but there will still be issues; and that is probably what was being discussed.

• JC says:

I think they have the best intentions but their execution of ideas is lacking. That was some of problems with S3. It probably looked good on paper but it didn’t work on film.

But the real problem with the show in general and not just with S3 is it’s consistency. Too many times issues brought up are forgotten about and ones are created out of thin air. They really don’t explore things to its fullest and it leaves people lacking resolutions. Or they pull mini retcons that contradict previous episodes and make it that you can’t believe what you see on the screen.

In general Chuck fans aren’t stupid, we notice these things and it adds to fan frustration.

• OldDarth says:

It reads like a continuation of Sarah’s difficulties in expressing her feelings much like last season’s ILY. Nothing in there surprises or raises my fur.

• Merve says:

That’s a total non-spoiler. Chuck is more emotionally open than Sarah? Wow! Eating too much candy can cause cavities? Canadian winters are cold? Knives are sharp? I never would have guessed!

Also, how Ausiello got “suffering” out of what Schwartz and Fedak said is beyond me.

• luckygirl says:

I think they might be able to handle this believably. Fears don’t automatically go away just because you love someone. She’s taken some huge steps but just because she might understand logically what to do in a relationship doesn’t mean that emotionally she’s never going to misstep.

• herder says:

If JS and CF had said this at the end of season two everybody would have said “duh”. What I take from this is that they are picking up some of the story lines that they had ignored last year to *ahem* go in a different direction.

At the end of Colonel, Sarah said “it is real”, that statement has consequences for her, how does she integrate her spy life with a person who is a civilian, albeit one with some knowlege of the spy life. She has always fallen for the people she works with, how does she deal with realities of her profession with someone who is not a part of that profession.

Chuck’s line from the Breakup, “…Sarah you will never be normal, I want to come home and tell you about something funny that Morgan did at work and you will be off in Bolivia quelling a revolution with a spoon” explains some of the potential problems. It is as if they are pretending that large chunks of season 3 didn’t happen to go back to issues that were ignored last year.

I think that Ausiello is talking about traditional gender roles being switched in the show (which in a way they always have been) rather than Chuck and Sarah switching who they have been for the first three years. It’s awkwardly worded but I don’t think it is anything to be worried about.

• Joseph (can't be Joe) says:

“It is as if they are pretending that large chunks of season 3 didn’t happen”

I know I am.

• atcdave says:

I agree Joseph. I think 3.14 flows very nicely after 2.22!

• aardvark7734 says:

Oooh, oooh… is this the mention that will cause Merve to put his fist through the wall? Will there be video?

Inquiring minds want to know. 😉

• James Lee says:

You’ll forgive me, but I think it really IS best to adopt the lizjames approach to this. The original Chuck show ENDED with Colonel and the “it’s real” comment.

That allows you to judge Season 3 on its own merits. It’s NOT a good season, but it is almost unfair to compare it to Seasons 1/2. It really IS a different show with different dynamics.

Season 4 may, in many ways, act as if Season 3 e1-13 did not exist. But then what of the back six? We SAW Chuck and Sarah doing the relationship-adjustment dance. What do they do? Have Sarah reject Chuck’s marriage proposal at first, only to change her mind later? We’ve seen that with the move-in scenario.

And it still does NOT answer my initial point: Chuck learns that his dad has been a secret spy for 20 years and he wants his son to continue in his shoes. Why is Sarah not the FIRST person he talks to and conspires with about it?She knows about being a spy. Se has proven a zillion times she doesn’t play by the book (how many times has she commited “treason” for him or plotted runaways with or for him?).

Chuck confiding first with Sarah about Orion’s secret should not be a relationship issue. LOGIC would point Chuck to Sarah first. And since he apparently has not done so, it seems sure that TPTB are simply (and once again) going to play the angst and CRM card. AGAIN.

@herder: Paraguay. Chuck thought Sarah was going to Paraguay. I stress this only because it was a brilliant callback to the Paraguay line in Grosse Point Blank. And then they do a Grosse Point Blank homage with Cougars in the very next episode. It was the kind of brilliance we saw in Season 2 that made it great.

• herder says:

James Lee, you’re right, the correct answer was Sarah in Paraguay with a fork.

• JC says:

Let’s just hope they put half the effort into the spy stuff as they do relationship drama this year. Or Linda Hamilton and Timothy Dalton talents will be wasted on some Ring type nonsense.

And if somehow Sarah regresses from the perfect spy g/f that she was in the back six it better make sense. No more whiplash for the sake of the plot.

Seriously, aardvark, don’t be a jerk. We can disagree without mocking each other.

one reason I refuse to read fan fiction, is in spite of my grumbling about wanting something else, I feel compelled to take the story as it is told, as opposed to making stuff up. I am afraid fan fiction would only make me grumble more about the story, and trust me, I am aware I am way too negative about anything not shippery in the show.

I am ok with any retcon that is on screen that lessens the misery TPTB inflicted on shippers in season 3 – but it has to be on screen, not on a blog, or a fiction site.

But, I will be surprised if season 3 is dealt with in either a shippery or non-shippery manner in season 4. All my experience tells me the show will move on – and create new problems – oops – I mean opportunities for fans to enjoy the show.

Jason, I often have a similar reaction to historical fiction. It makes me angry sometimes the things people think are true because they were in a movie or novel.

But I do have a different attitude towards true alternatives. Sometimes the point is just to explore what the impact of little changes could be or add emphasis to a decision point. Some mythos, like Star Trek, have a long tradition of using fan fictions to sort of fill in around the edges (much published Star Trek material has its origins from fandom). I would have to admit some of what you mention still happens. I honestly like some of the fan fictions better than cannon; and would even say I’m more invested in some of them at this point. But the show will always have a special place as the starting point for all the ideas others want to play with. And as you know from reading this blog I still care deeply about how things actually happen on the show. I just don’t feel obligated to accept their version as the best possibility or the way things ought to be.

Oops, sorry, thought we were still kidding about this. I just recalled you said you’d do it if one more person…

But, that’s fine, no problem.
