Friday Fun: The Second ChuckThisBlog Trivia Quiz

What do you mean we can't get Chuck online?

How many episodes was Bryce in? Check IMDB…

We tried this a few weeks back, and while people seemed to like it, I thought it a mixed bag. The questions were too tough, and some I even got wrong, but the point was just a bit of fun to fill the time and to think back on all those wonderful Chuck episodes. So without further ado, here’s the new, and hopefully improved Chuck Trivia quiz. After the jump.

Once again the disclaimer, I wrote the questions and the answers, and while I am confident I know my Chuck, there is the chance that I got it wrong.  If so you may politely challenge my “correct” answer in comments.

Take the quiz here if the embedded one doesn’t play nice with your browser.

About Ernie Davis

I was born in 1998, the illegitimate brain child and pen name of a surly and reclusive misanthrope with a penchant for anonymity. My offline alter ego is a convicted bibliophile and causes rampant pognophobia whenever he goes out in public. He wants to be James Lileks when he grows up or Dave Barry if he doesn’t.  His hobbies are mopery, curling and watching and writing about Chuck.  Obsessively.  Really, the dude needs serious help.

So I didn’t do too badly this time, but only if you pardon my lack of knowledge about California geography.

Hey, I’m an East Coast boy, and I didn’t wanna cheat by using Google Maps! 😉

  2. authorguy says:

    67%
Hmm. We saw Casey with Ilsa in some European city in an S1 episode, didn’t we? Or does that not count because it was before Team B existed?
I hope you’ll explain the various forms the characters might have taken in Q8.

    • Ernie Davis says:

I’ll be posting answers and explanations later so I don’t totally spoil it. But your supposition regarding Casey is correct.

  3. garnet says:

Bah! Missed the number of Bryce episodes. Also, does Gertrude count as a villian?
Fun Quizz. Thanks for thaking the time and effort to do this for us.

    • Ernie Davis says:

Like her boyfriend Casey she starts as a threat to team B, but has a change of heart later, so she is initially a villain for our purposes.

    • joe says:

Me too, Garnet. The structure of the show makes it a bit hard to recall some of the instances. You almost wanna say “*That* counts?” I went back after the fact and counted the number of times credit was given, though, and Ernie got it right.

    • atcDave says:

Yeah I waffled on if a couple of brief teaser scenes should count. I decided yes, and apparently that was correct.

    • Ernie Davis says:

Hmmm, sorry if that was confusing. I thought “How many episodes did Bryce Larkin appear in?” was pretty unambiguous. Although I could see an argument being made that the opening teasers are part of the episode, which would complicate things immensely. For our purposes count only the episode itself, not the “here’s a few things you need to know…”

  4. atcDave says:

That was tough! But in the end it just goes to prove, I’ve watched entirely too much Chuck! (If that’s even possible).

  5. Wilf says:

My excuse is that I can’t be expected to be good at US geography

  6. anthropocene says:

    YES! 100%! Though it was a lucky W.A.G. on Q8, and I wasn’t completely sure about Q5.

  7. Ernie Davis says:

OK, time to go through the answers and my (less tortured this time) logic behind them.

Which of the following tried to purchase Nagamichi Plaza from Jack Burton.

Seems to be an easy one, 68% got it right.  Rajiv Ahmad

Which of the following villains has Sarah NOT gone hand to hand with.

Gertrude Verbanski on the rooftop in Frosted Tips
Rafe Gruber in Shaw’s hotel room in Fake Name
LaCiudad on top of the Weinerlicious in Tango
Heather Chandler in the shower in Cougars and in Castle in Cubic Z
Casey and Sarah have a standoff with Mei-Ling, but they never come to blows

Only 35% picked the right rival.

Sarah’s boss at the Wienerlicious was named …

Another pretty easy one, 80% remembered Scooter.

Team B travels to WEAPCON in …

Definitely Dubai as 94% of the quiz takers knew.

Before season 3 what is the farthest we see any of Team B travel from Burbank.

Kind of tricky since it depends on knowing California’s geography, but as 56% of respondents knew Standford is furthest from Burbank.

Where has Chuck lived outside of Burbank (a.k.a Echo Park)*

Remember he is Charles Irving Bartowski of the Encino Bartowskis as 88% of you affirmed.

How many episodes did Bryce Larkin appear in?

Pilot, Alma Mater (albeit in flashback), Hard Salami, Nemesis, Seduction, Break-Up and Ring for a total of 7. Obviously the toughest question as only 15% got the count right.

Which of the following has not been a guest star on Chuck

Kind of a tough one since it requires broad nerd-knowledge of pop culture, but it’s Batman as 38% of you knew (or guessed). Here’s the breakdown.

Mystique played by Rebecca Rojmain Stamos who was in Curse

Superman in Superman Returns played by Brandon Routh AKA Shaw

Trinity played by Kerri Ann Moss, AKA Gertrude Verbanski

Luke Skywalker played by Mark Hammil was the initial villain in Zoom

James Bond the 4th (5th if you count Connery twice) Timothy Dalton

River Tam, constant source of annoyance to Jayne Cobb, Summer Glau was also Greta

Freddy Kruger actor Robert Englund was also nightmarish Dr Stanley Wheelwright in AoT

Batman✓ None of the many Batmans have ever guest starred on Chuck

The Hulk  Not the recent CGI versions, but the original TV series with Lou Ferrigno, who was the lovestruck bodyguard in Suitcase.

Stan Lee as Stan Lee, spy and pursuer of Dianne Beckman in Santa Suit

Terminator model T-1000 and Tic Tac enthusiast Col. James Keller played by Robert Patrick

Imhotep and the nearly indestructible Fulcrum agent Vincent were both played by Arnold Vosloo

Caprica 6 and her alter-ego agent Alex Forrest, the emotionless robot sent to replace Sarah in Broken Heart both courtesy of Tricia Helfer

a Hobbit … named Meriadoc ‘Merry’ Brandybuck and dyslexic rock star Tyler Martin, both courtesy of Dominic Monaghan

Tron or Bruce Boxleitner, aka Woody Woodcomb

Which Chuck guest star appeared in the most seasons (as opposed to episodes) of Chuck

Mini Anden wins with appearances in seasons 1, 3, and 4 and 86% of your answers.

    • thinkling says:

I forgot about Alma Mater, and I went back and forth on Hard Salami. Since he didn’t actually appear, I decided to go for the straight forward count, instead of the tricky one. He really didn’t appear in Hard Salami. If you count Hard Salami, you have to count Helicopter. In Helicopter, we thought he was in the coffin. Only later did we learn he wasn’t. In Hard Salami we didn’t know he was in the capsule. Only later did we learn the contents of the capsule. So counting the tricky episodes, it should be 8.

      • Ernie Davis says:

Actually they open the capsule at the very end of Hard Salami (about a minute from the end of the episode) and we do see Bryce take in a sharp breath, letting us know he’s alive, so I don’t see how you can’t count Hard Salami as an appearance.

      • atcDave says:

And an “appearance” is exactly all it was!

      • thinkling says:

Ah, ok. I obviously forgot that detail. *blush*

      • Ernie Davis says:

Don’t worry we won’t tell Joe so he won’t water down your gruel.

      • joe says:

Wouldn’t stop me for a moment, Ernie.
        Bwa-ha!

      • joe says:

BTW, did anyone else notice that both the NSA *and* Ernie are keeping tabs on our scores here? Hum???

I say it’s time we revolt and let the world know we think 100 E. of Barstow is further from Echo Park than is Stanford! That’ll show ’em.

End the tyranny of the maps NOW!

      • I was just watching Chuck vs. the Alma Mater.
Chuck: “I love you, sis. And I’d take a lot of bullets for you. But five hours in a car with Awesome and his broawls… That is asking too much.”

        That implies around 300 miles (it’s 350).

      • anthropocene says:

While we’re at it…wherever it was that Sarah and Chuck visited Steve Bartowski in his Caravan trailer, it sure wasn’t 100 miles east of Barstow (a point in the middle of a barren, flat alluvial valley in the east Mojave Desert). They did pass fairly close by that spot in episode 6.05 though. 😉

      • Ernie Davis says:

Actually 113 miles east of Barstow on I-15 is Nipton, CA and 108 miles east on I-40 is Essex, CA. Both feature nearby mountainous regions with sufficient vegetation to pass for Stephan’s parking spot.

      • anthropocene says:

I wouldn’t argue that it’s impossible in the Chuckverse, where it’s silly of me to argue details anyway. But I’m sure you’d agree that scene wasn’t filmed on any range in the east Mojave.

      • Ernie Davis says:

Certainly not, it wouldn’t make sense to travel that far for a few seconds of footage. I’m just saying that though it might be a bit greener that the real place, they picked a topography that isn’t implausible.

    • anthropocene says:

Thanks for the work you put into this, Ernie…it was fun!

      • Ernie Davis says:

You’re welcome. I’ll just say again, if you have a suggestion or a trivia question you’d like to see included feel free to sent it to erniedavis at verizon dot net.

  8. I finished late, but got 100% without looking at the posted answers. I also started a rewatch last night which helped reboot the Chuck part of my brain. No ambiguous questions like what constitutes an install. Connecticut was incorrectly put on the NBC website for a while, but the character background information there was full of problems.

The guest star question was brilliant, Ernie. No Batman, but the Joker made an appearance. Or at least his voice did.

    • Ernie Davis says:

Thanks Jeff, that was my favorite question. I actually double checked voice work on a few to make sure they’d never voiced Batman just to keep from confusing things. I origonally had quite a few more, it is ripe territory, but things were getting obscure.

Connecticut was also in Chuck’s college file he flashed on in Alma Mater, but they were clear in Honeymooners that Chuck never lived outside of California.

      • I blame Bryce Larkin for doctoring Chuck’s college file that ended up in the Intersect.

      • joe says:

        Really?? I blame Beckman, myself.
No, wait. That’s something Langston Graham would do! Sure. That solves the mystery. The CIA did it!

      • atcDave says:

I think those are also the same spy files that say Chuck and Ellie’s parents were killed in a car crash.

      • I’m sticking with Bryce or maybe Orion. That was the first Intersect, so Beckman and Graham had no reason to change Chuck’s back story. Only Bryce and Stephen had reason to obfuscate Chuck’s history.

The nbc.com files also said Sarah went to Harvard and Casey was in the Air Force. I’m blaming that on an underpaid NBC intern who didn’t watch Chuck and was too nervous to ask the producers or writers.

      • atcDave says:

In 1.02 Casey claimed to have flown a Stealth Fighter, which is exclusively Air Force hardware, so THAT conclusion is reasonable. (Although with NSA anything is possible)
Harvard is more random, but its become a sort of quasi-canon.

      • Ernie Davis says:

Yes, but Casey also claimed to have a perfect record as an assassin till Beckman called him out. And to be fair he said he figured out how to fly a stealth fighter; he didn’t say he had permission…

      • In the next episode, Casey told Chuck he needed to know how to Tango. Casey’s almost as poor a source of truth as the bad guys.

How do YOU know the Marines don’t have stealth fighters. It could be classified. Of course now that ‘NSA’, ‘stealth’, and ‘classified’ are on the same blog page, maybe someone reading this from the NSA could give us a hint.

      • atcDave says:

Well the Stealth Fighter, F-117, isn’t really that classified anymore. At least enough to know, the Marines categorically do not have them. It’s mission profile is WAY outside the Marine portfolio.
But apart from assuming Casey was spreading some disinformation, I can reconcile it one of two ways. Either as a long time professional warrior, Casey has served in both the Marines and Air Force (possible, it does happen, but unlikely based on what all else we know about Casey); or he has had cause to fly one in his later clandestine service role. That seems very reasonable. It also amuses me that Casey did just let Chuck assume he was Air Force as late as First Date, when he was actually a Marine all along.

  9. mr2686 says:

I’ll take my 78% and be happy. Missed Verbanski and number of Bryce episodes. Fun quiz.

  10. resaw says:

89%. Only missed the number of Bryce episodes: off by 1.

  11. Lola says:

Fun quiz! Only 44% but in my defense I’m not even from the US, so n.5 was a bit difficult 🙂

    Thanks for the fun game!
